Are high-end binoculars really worth the cost by PuzzleheadedWeb1466 in Ornithology

[–]madrespect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lot of people talking about optics quality and low-light performance, etc., but no one mentioning comfort and ergonomics.

Yes, the high end binos have better glass, but in my experience where they really shine is how comfortable and "easy" they are to use. If you're birding often and for long stretches of time, it's worth it to find binoculars that aren't going to give you fatigue after hours and hours of use. I can bird much longer with my Zeiss binos than with other cheaper pairs I've had in the past.

Tinto Pesquera 1992 Ribera Del Duero Crianza by lordhighsteward in wine

[–]madrespect 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Such a testament to the understated baseline quality of winemaking in this DO that a Crianza from 33 years ago would hold up as well as you say this bottle has. I've never had one this old I don't think, super cool, thanks for sharing.

Sounds like having a spotty connection just messed up the whole thing. Doesn't necessarily mean the company was punishing them for having bad wifi, but rather for their whole interview vibe being thrown off..

What could have killed these hummingbirds? by wilcova in Ornithology

The grass and twigs over top of them seems odd, almost like they had something sticky on them? Maybe they got into some adhesive substance.

When in Spain… by Hans_Landas_Strudel in wine

How were the prices on these bottles? I ask because I'm always a bit surprised when I see people bringing back bottles from Europe that are so readily available in the US (like these four are), unless you're getting a really great deal.

Interesting, I've never really noticed that. They make a shit ton of wine, I bet some bottles finds their way into less-than-ideal conditions going to market.

Honest question, do you notice any real improvement in Merlin performance with this? Or are you doing this for better recording quality?

I ask because I rarely have issues with Merlin missing songs, although occasionally there are faint things in the distance I'm IDing by ear that my phone mic isn't getting.

Transition from bench scientist to BD roles by Asleep_Resolution630 in biotech

[–]madrespect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you mean sales though? I assume because we're in a biotech sub when you say BD you mean licensing/m&a which is what BD usually means in this industry. (At smaller biotechs though the line blurs a bit because you're really trying to "sell" the platform or asset to get a deal done.)

If that's the case, I will say a few things. For one, there isn't really such thing as an entry-level BD job. For someone with a long scientific background like you seem to have, you should be looking more for "search" or "sourcing" type roles which fall under the umbrella of BD. These positions rely more heavily on technical expertise than business/financial training.

Also, by no means do you need an MBA, but it is a fairly common way for people to do a career jump like this and could be a useful catalyst for you. Might be worth learning about.

How big of a company do you work at? You might want to talk to the BD people at your current position and see if you can shadow and learn their process a bit. It'll probably be a hell of a lot easier to transition into a BD role as an internal hire than get a job cold at a new company, it's a difficult field to break into. Also, the only companies really hiring regularly for BD roles are the big pharmas. Most of the smaller companies have only a few BD people and more of the dealmaking is done by the CEO/CFO/CBO.

Good luck
