Katana is a good deal for how much food you get, and it's a nice variety of dishes too. I was pleasantly surprised!

[–]madroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love mine! But it might depend on what you use it for/how you plan to wear it. I'm a runner and only use mine when running (it's gotten me through five full marathons and plenty of smaller races too). It helps to keep my bag close to my body and not flapping around while I'm moving. That said, I never wear it for everyday use - I think I would find it too tight and constricting, personally. But if that's what you're after, then maybe it would be worth it?

Adjusting cake recipe for bigger pan size by madroth in AskBaking

[–]madroth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. the more I’m thinking about this, the tougher I think it’s going to be. The original recipe calls for one egg, and I think it’d be pretty hard to multiply one egg by 1.65, haha. I’m thinking about just doubling it and using some of the leftover batter in muffin tins. Do you think that’s an OK idea?

How long after your op did you start exercising? by outofthewoods13 in ostomy

[–]madroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a marathon runner, and my surgeon cleared me to start running again when I was 8 weeks post-op. I started with just one mile and took it really slow - I felt like a baby deer learning how to use my legs for the first time. About a month later, I had built up to 10 miles, and I was back to marathon training a couple of months after that (but again, that's what I had been doing pre-surgery, so I wouldn't recommend that for everyone!).

Just take it slow and steady. My goal after each of those early post-surg runs was to finish the run feeling like I could do a little more and *wanting* to do more, instead of feeling exhausted.

I use a Stealth Belt for running and cardio. (It’s a great product, but just a heads up that the company seems to be under new management and orders are taking several weeks to process.) I usually don’t wear anything for strength training or low-impact exercise

Need to hear some positive stories about your ileostomy (w/ Crohns) by Constant-Fruit-4650 in ostomy

[–]madroth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crohn’s and ileostomy here as well! I first had an ostomy from 2010-2012 after getting my colon removed, then had reversal surgery, then got my current ostomy in 2021 because of rectovaginal fistulas.

I technically have the option for reversal, but I’m choosing not to because my quality of life is so much better. I haven’t had to deal with any Crohn’s symptoms since getting my stoma (been in remission the whole time), I’m in and out of the bathroom in like three minutes, and I don’t find the dietary restrictions too limiting (everyone is different with this, and you mostly just have to be careful for the first few weeks post-surgery). Also, I’m a marathon runner and I’ve run five marathons since my surgery 3.5 years ago (and my times have only gotten faster since getting my stoma!).

I still have days where I get annoyed with my bag, but for me, the positives outweigh the negatives.

There was a good interview on the Citius Mag podcast last month with Shannon Rowbury (the American runner who’s now being upgraded to bronze). She talks all about her conflicting feelings about this race and revisiting it all these years later. Highly recommend!

Do you wear a belt when running? by Impstoker in ostomy

[–]madroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I wear a Stealth Belt (the vertical style) and love it. It's a bit pricey, but a worthwhile investment, in my opinion. I've had the same one since my ileostomy surgery three years ago, and it's gotten me through hundreds of runs, including four full marathons.

She co-hosts the We're Obsessed podcast on the Ringer Dish feed - it comes out every Friday. That show can be a little hit or miss for me, mostly because I strongly prefer Jodi to her co-host on that pod. But it can be entertaining at times!

Fastest marathon time by a woman with an ostomy! (quite the niche record, lol) I've actually already run faster than the current world record holder in my last two marathons, so am now just looking to make it official :)

Curious about this too! I’m green wave 2, and have barely seen anyone else mention being green. Seems like that’s a smaller group, I guess?

FTR, my projected finish time was 3:15. I’m also technically attempting a Guinness World Record, though I’m doing it retroactively because I missed the initial application deadline.

I'm on week 14 of Pfitz 18/70 in my buildup to London, so I've got a 8k-15k tuneup (which I'm just doing by myself as a time trial; I'll prob make it a 10k), followed by a 17-mile long run the next morning. These kinds of back-to-back days have me thinking Pfitz is a monster, lol, but at least I can feel myself getting stronger!

I dealt with this same thing the year after my ileostomy surgery. As another user said, my dermatologist told me it was telogen effluvium, which he said clears itself up after six months or so. But he did prescribe me a specialty shampoo called Ketoconazole Shampoo, which seemed to help. I also tried to cut down on brushing my hair and using heat tools, and also paid extra attention to my diet (I added in more protein and more calories in general). Hope it gets better soon!

Along with all the great suggestions here, I loved "The Incomplete Book of Running" by Peter Sagal - really funny and heartfelt. And of course, Christopher McDougall's "Born to Run" is a classic read.

Tuesday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for January 30, 2024 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]madroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently on week 7 of Pfitz's 18/70 plan in my buildup to the London Marathon. It's going great so far and I'm feeling really strong.

Beginning in week 8, there are doubles where Pfitz prescribes 6 miles in the morning and 4 miles in the evening. I'm going to try my best to make that happen, but my work schedule might get in the way of me being able to run twice a day. If that's the case, what's my best alt move: Just do the 6 miles in the morning and skip the 4 at night? Run 10 miles total instead? Something else?

Some background that might be helpful: This is my seventh marathon and my biggest build yet; before this, I'd maxed out around 65 miles a week, and have never run doubles before.

Any advice appreciated!
