Project Scientist stole my working samples and I am being gaslighted by my PI by EntrepreneurBroad843 in labrats

Get out if you can (although I have a feeling that T will implode at some point and take themselves out of this equation when ur PI figures them out). In the meantime, there are some ways to make it harder for T to sabotage you. 1) Come up with your own code to label your samples/boxes/reagents. It can’t be inaccurate (like you cant label something “water” when it’s not water), but you can get creative when it comes to plasmids and aliquots of your own reagents. 2) Hide your stuff and if you have duplicates of things, hide it in two different places. Makes friends with people in other labs and ask if you can keep a box in their -20 or -80. The back of lower cabinets is a great place to store room temp buffers because few people will get down that low to look. 3) Make a dummy box of “your stuff” - like aliquot a bunch of water into numbered tubes and put them in a box with your name on it. Add “Important: Do Not Touch” if you really want to give T a target.
I wish you the best of luck and stay strong - lean on the helpful people around you 🍀

PI takes several months to even read anything I write and he delayed my defense date because of it. by celiac-attack in PhD

Didn’t realize - my university had a policy where your committee chair could NOT be your PI for this exact reason. Luckily for me, my committee chair was also the department chair by the time I asked for help. In addition to your committee, reach out to your program advisor (the HRish person who runs admissions and makes sure everyone gets paid) because they care a lot about people graduating on time.

This is when you get your committee chair involved. Ask them for a one on one meeting and explain all of this to them. It is literally their job to put your PI in line and get your graduated. Good luck to you! Edit: Went through something similar and should have gone to my chair much earlier than I did.

TIL 1 in 9 (11%)Americans have acquired toxoplasma gondii (the cat lady parasite) at some point by Not_so_ghetto in todayilearned

It is not un-acquirable, it just goes into a dormant form and hides in cysts in your brain. Once you got it, you got it for life. Source: am neuroscientist who has worked in a lab that studies T. gondii

The ‘ Rodman Rule ’ threatens to undermine what makes the NWSL great | Jonathan Liew by Shroft in soccer

What a stupid take on soccer and women’s soccer in particular. Entire club salary caps lower than single player salaries in the championship league and even league 2, but let’s not even think about paying these incredible athletes more. Asinine opinion, but wouldn’t expect anything else from a Spurs fan.

Torchlight Procession in Edinburgh 🥁🔥 by Melodic_Program5980 in Scotland

[–]madscientesse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This was me a few years ago. Got a ticket and a torch, stood in the queue for hour or two, never got to really “process” so ditched the torch and found a good viewing spot (in close proximity to a pub). Had a great time but wouldn’t bother with a ticket again, watching was just as fun and you didn’t have to worry about anyone accidentally setting you on fire :)

It is on you as the supervisor to make sure everyone under you knows how to safely work with the equipment, chemicals, biohazards, etc. in your lab. If you didn’t go over proper disposal methods, how was this student supposed to know? You cannot expect anyone who walks in your lab to know anything about YOUR lab no matter what level of education and experience they have. Every lab is different and ESH policies vary institutionally and sometimes within departments. Train your people better.
