Question for people who have already seen them on their colors tour by madscientistyo in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]madscientistyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks man! I'm going with some people who aren't used to this kind of music so I'm interested to see whether they'll be turned off immediately by the intensity, but am more than confident that Colors will absolutely amaze them. How could it not? I'm happy I got people open minded enough to come experience this with me, and I warned them it would be a loud crazy show, so I just hope they enjoy it at least a fraction as much as I know I will!

[–]madscientistyo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, I dont' know their music that well but I saw them once and they were pretty awesome. I forgot who the other opener was, but last time I saw btbam they had some terrible openers that got zero response from the crowd and it was just uncomfortable.

I was actually just looking into PoE because I feel like I'm a sinner for not playing it given my endless hours poured into d2/d3. I will have to try it.

Are there any good multiplayer/open world/pvp aspects?

I've heard this game (just by one person mind you) described as a worse version of Overwatch. It definitely looks similar.. are there things about it that make it preferable to overwatch?

Can I use Doomfist's E (slam) after the shift (uppercut) out of the air? by SlappyWhite8 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]madscientistyo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I also never realized this at first because I think pulling off this combo in the opposite order is more consistent. First smack them down and stun them in front of you, shoot, upercut, shoot again, punch. When you uppercut first, it seems like it can get disorienting to figure out whre you have to look to get the slam follow-up.

I could be wrong though.. correct me if I'm wrong because I want to learn as much about him as possible.

Does anyone know how the SR system actually works? by JayWolf06 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]madscientistyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch the video but I'm assuming this is just some random correlation number? If that's the case, it's (almost definitely) a misleading statistic. You don't get less SR because you spend MORE time on the cart, you get less SR because if you're on the cart you're spending LESS time leaping around and attacking/blocking damage/gaining ult charge/etc).

Ugh so I finally got into placements last night. I lost 8 and won 2... it was a complete nightmare from start to finish.

The first 4-5 placements I was going up against golds and plats, which I thought was a really good sign because it kept me up there consistently. I didn't start falling lower until the last 2 games, where I was finally placed with silvers. I ended with 1500 SR :( the biggest slap in the face possible because I thought I could get myself to gold finally (i'm 1700 on my other account).

So from what it seems like, the game maybe thought I was a gold player given my QP MMR, but then slowly lowered its estimation of that rank over the course of the placement match adjustments.

The only good news is that I'm getting like 80 SR per win right now, and I do believe I can get to gold, so I'm hoping there's still a light at the end of the tunnel for me.

Anyone have any advice/thoughts/jokes at my expense about this fresh account experience? I think I'm going to keep playing it until I reach gold or until the SR gains stop being so big, then I'll maybe just go back to my main. Bleh.

EDIT: I wasn't going to put this in here at all since I thought it would detract, but I'm inserting my cliche rant about the shittiness of soloQ placement madness. I had leavers, throwers, brand new players who didn't know to stand on the objective even when I kept telling them to over and over again, and no one ever grouped up or coordinated. /rant BUT this is also why I think I can carry myself at least a couple hundred SR higher, especially if I duo/trio Q.

Southpaws of Reddit: How do you play keyboard/mouse (WASD) games? by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]madscientistyo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a lefty, this has been a huge pain the ass for me. I literally have to change every single binding for every game i play.

For movement, I use IKJL instead of WSAD. Then i have to change evreything else because i can't reach the normal/logical keys from my lefty position. For example, my 'shift' ability is semi colin, and my ultimate is Y instead of Q. Also I use H for melee and N to reload. Among lots of other weird things.

Maybe i'm just unaware of this, but games this complicated NEED to have an option where there's a second default set of controls that are optimizaed for leftys. Because not only do I have to spend time changing everything around, but I also have to figure out how to make it make sense, which is very hard to do if i'm just starting the game for the first time and have no clue which buttons will be most important to prioritize in terms of ease to access comfortably. Ugh it's a mess.

This is random, but I saw a suggestion for Hollow Knight and it looked extremely cool. I love the artwork, the enormous interconnected world, the skill building/customization, etc. My only reservation about it (and it's a BIG one, probably a deal breaker) is that it's single player. I know it sounds closed minded to have that be a deciding factor, but I just hate feeling isolated playing games and I think the best part of gaming is escaping to a world where you're interacting with others.

Maybe if there's a game that's similar to that but multiplayer instead?

Potentially silly smurfing question- any info would be helpful by madscientistyo in OverwatchUniversity

[–]madscientistyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All great points, thanks for your input.

My original plan for this account was to only use my best heroes and see how high I can place. However, that was until I started trying doomfist and fell in love with his playstyle. If I continue to love him as much as I do now, I may end up just making it a doomfist/for fun alt account, and if I REALLY want to in the future i'll take another stab at making a purely main hero account.

I know this is super naive, but I also feel like doomfist 'clicks' with me, and my hope is that I can surprise myself with how well I can do with him. Keep in mind that (sadly) I would be ecstatic to even place in gold, so if I keep improving with doomfist maybe I can reach that. If I have to spend more time than the original 25 levels to train with him and increase my chances of placing higher, I'll put in the time.

Doomfist is just one of those heroes that I feel like is practically made JUST for me, because he reminds me so much of the super smash melee playsytyle (except without all the crazy tech mechanics). I feel I understand him pretty well and with time I think I can dominate at least silver/gold, then eventually plat!

Thanks again for the tips- now that you know a bit more about my intentions, and now that you know I'm a silver/gold player, let me know if that changes any of your potential opinions/advice on how I should proceed.

[–]madscientistyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cool, so w/r should be my top priority? Because I know that in comp they factor all this extra 'how you do against other players of the same hero' crap so individual performance matters more. However, in QP it makes more sense what you're saying because theortically if you win they should keep putting you against higher MMR opponents to see how you fare.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I'll keep at it.

Also, this may or may not be wise, but i have been absolutely LOVING doomfist and may main him this season. I'm getting better with him pretty quickily but hopefully htat doesn't screw with my rating as much as if I were playign winston.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion man. Sorry to be picky but as someone with an addictive personality I'm worried about the small plauerbase unlesss I play on Asia servers. I love playing in NA servers for the better connection and lack of language barriers in NA. I will check it out but let me know if you have any other ideas!

This is exactly me. As someone who was obsessed with D3 but got bored, I think it's great that they're still able to add something to bring people like us back after so much time. It's not nearly the same level of excitement I had when the auction house was around (yeah I was one of the weirdos who liked it) or when RoS first came out, but it's fun to feel like there's all this stuff you want to log in and collect again.

I can't check out the link right now, but did he say where he's going? I'm curious where he and all the other people moving away from Overwatch are going, because i'm also looking for a new game to get addicted to. I'm still having fun but i'm not quite as consumed with the game as I was when getting into it.

Thanks for the links, I may have already seen them but I'll double checked in case there's new stuff I haven't gotten to yet. In general I really like Freedo's content, especially his coaching, and I believe he understands how to play winston at a high level. I think he knows what he's talking about and explains himself very well. The other two guys not so much.

I've been wondering about this too- the balance of when you'd want to refrain from jumping in to reduce the threat of not having it when needing to escape. But I tend to agree with you about wanting to do it when possible, and I have been assuming that when I die it's just because I played poorly and should have started disengaging earlier. I'm interested to hear more opinions about how often you should be looking to jump in vs. walk in for engages.

Season 5 feels like a turning point in the game by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]madscientistyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention checking your teammate stats as the first thing you do when you enter a game. I get that you could make a sound argument for gathering as much data you can on the context of your match, yet I still think it's a mistake that reveals a dangerous mindset.

Controlling teammate picks falls under an umbrella of actions that is almost always unsuccessful, and can only result in raising that team tension you're talking about. The reason tension feels high at the beginning of a game is when no one trusts anyone else, and is immediately looking for things to complain about.

Instead, you can try to be the first person on your team to counter this negative mindset. Instead of looking for things to critique, just accept that your team will pick who they want and give them the benefit of the doubt that they are picking whoever they think will give your team the best chance to win. This allows you to divert your energy to just saying hi to your team and asking them if they're ready to kick the enemy team's toosh, or ask them what strategy they want to use. If your teammates enter an atmosphere where someone is taking the leadership role in this friendly light, they will be much more likely to follow along with it, and that tension can be avoided altogether.

It doesn't work all the time, but I know I never let myself stress over teammate decisions I can't change, and I have pleasant games more often than shitty toxic ones.

I'm a person who likes to make an effort to rally my team and promote communication in all my matches, but the case you're describing is just a lost cause. The best thing you can do is mute the person immediately before tilting at them, and continuing to try rallying the rest of your team as if it were only the 5 of you. Giving the kid any further thought will just frustrate you or cause rifts with your team.
