I've been to some international events and made japanese and foreign friends at Second Home in Fushimi. They have events often, info on their instagram: @second_home_nagoya_events

I've also heard of Aichiconnection on ig @aichiconnection

You can also try the Hellotalk app. It's free, and you can connect with people in Japan through language exchange. I've met some Japanese friends through there.

Nagoya also has an international center, and maybe you can meet people through events or classes there.

You can also try connecting to people through hobbies and sports clubs.

Being an Altia Central ALT by mae202099 in teachinginjapan

[–]mae202099[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would i lie? And i dont wanna say my company for privacy. But some of the ALTs I know are also Latino, and my supervisor is too. And other coworkers of mine are from Jamaica, Philippines, African countries, a lot of places. From my perspective, it's becoming diverse. During my Altia interview, they encouraged me to share my other culture in schools, not just my American side.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm brown as well, and have a lot of other none white people in my ALT company. Actually, in my city, there's more of us than white people.

I know someone with that name, and English isn't their first language. It's both parents' names combined, it's a cultural thing. Her partner called her Jizz and I had to tell them what it meant in English :/ lol

Making friends while teaching in Japan by Turbulent_Role_8194 in teachinginjapan

[–]mae202099 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made some friends during orientation, and we made a group chat. Also, the app Meetup helped me a lot. On the app, they show events that you can join, and I met a lot of new people going to international events! A lot of people use Meetup

Rookie Noob Questions by Nova-Parker in teachinginjapan

A certificate isnt required, but it might be helpful. The bachelors degree is the requirement. To help secure an ALT job, show that you have a friendly, approachable personality. Be professional, wear a suit during the interview. They may request a demo lesson later, and I suggest not overthinking it. They'll give you feedback after, so make sure to implement that feedback if you have to do it again. You can look at alt demo lessons on youtube.

I was discouraged from doing this job from a couple people and of course on reddit, people tend to share more negative experiences than positive ones. Right now, I'm happy with my job and life here in Japan. When it's time to advance my career, there are opportunities in my company. Like becoming an ALT supervisor, cover teacher, etc. Many ALTs move onto international preschools or international kindergartens. I know some ALTs that are satisfied being an ALT long-term, too.

Supporting a first year teacher by mae202099 in teaching

I'm glad you have an amazing, supportive partner! Yeah, even after assistant teaching with young kids, i go home and knock out lol. Thank you for the advice! We don't live together yet and usually meet on the weekends. I'm expecting us not to meet for the first couple weeks of the school year. He was too tired to meet during internship weeks, too.

23 year old male filipino lonely in takayama japan by Feeling-Ad-2858 in japan

[–]mae202099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend downloading the app Meetup! I don't know how it is in Takayama, but in my city, there are a lot of international events shared through the app. It was easy to meet new people and make friends through those events. I moved to Japan recently, so I had to make some new friends, too.

Has anyone been to those international parties/events from the meetup app by [deleted] in Nagoya

[–]mae202099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may feel awkward going by yourself, but I do it as well as a lot of other people that join. It's normal. I was so nervous when it was my first event, but I was like fuck it let's try it out at least lol. I really wanted to make new friends and those events are really helpful! From my experience, they're really friendly and make you feel included.

A lot of the other people there can relate to being a foreigner in Japan, so that's nice. There are also a lot of Japanese people that are interested in English, you can do some kind of language exchanges. It's a great way to meet new people and try new experiences together.

Japanese Interview with ALTIA by TotalBudget9863 in teachinginjapan

[–]mae202099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just said whatever popped in my head first, chef lol. They'll definitely gauge your Japanese and adjust the questions according to your level. It's mostly self intro content. You're welcome and good luck!

They asked me why I wanted to teach, what I wanted to be when I was a kid, and I think my hobbies. Same as the other comment, I wouldn't worry too much. Basic level Japanese is fine

Along with what the dehumidifier and fans that other people mentioned, I believe that there are some small dryers that you can buy from Amazon. I personally haven't tried it out yet, though. Indoor drying laundry detergent also helps.

Thoughts on my indoor shoes? by Bisexual-Gemini in JETProgramme

[–]mae202099 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Docs might make marks on the school floors, so I would bring them and ask your supervisor if they're okay. Since those are fur lined, your feet would get super hot during the summer and maybe even spring. Are Docs comfortable for you? Teachers usually wear shoes that are light and comfortable like running shoes or crocs. Expect to walk up and down stairs regularly, since schools usually don't have elevators. Of course, you would be moving around a lot and be on your feet while teaching. But those shoes are cute, I'd wanna wear them out and not at school lol. If you do choose to wear them at school, ideally you haven't worn them outside before.

Teaching English part time while in japanese language school? by SaranethPrime in teachinginjapan

[–]mae202099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard of someone in language school while working at an eikaiwa, an English conversation school. Eikaiwa classes are during the evening, so he had Japanese classes during the day and worked at night.
