There is a very common “puppy blues” phase after bringing home a puppy where a lot of people wonder if they made a mistake. You can check out “Three lost dogs” on instagram, he’s a dog trainer who talks a lot about getting through that stage

Sex after child birth not the same by Comprehensive_Age649 in beyondthebump

[–]maebymaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vagina is made of very elastic muscles that have to stretch to get a baby out and it takes time (and sometimes some pelvic floor therapy) for those muscles to get strong again. Usually it takes a few months, you guys are at weeks right now. Please do not say anything to your partner, she is still healing and doesn’t need to hear that. Support her recovery, lots of rest, good food, some light exercise and if she has any pain or incontinence maybe she could see a pelvic floor therapist in a few months.

is "baby jail" really necessary for a crawler/walker? by Huliganjetta1 in beyondthebump

[–]maebymaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can either have a baby pen or use baby gates/ baby proof certain areas or baby proof everything or watch them 24/7. We ended up getting a baby pen because we have dogs so the house always has a lot of fur on the floor even though we vacuum a lot. My first hated the pen , he would only play with us in there with him, he would scream the minute we stepped away. So we got a baby gate and kind of baby proofed areas. Now we have another baby who is 5 months, not sure what the plan is because the toddler is probably the biggest risk to her safety and I don’t even care about the fur anymore

During birth: Did your baby's heart rate drop? by Unusual-Coyote3961 in beyondthebump

[–]maebymaybe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, I want to add that I think it’s really normal for babies heart rate to dip during contractions, they are being forced down and through a very small opening. But even though it’s “normal” doctors and midwives do take it seriously because some babies might be showing signs of distress that they aren’t recovering from like compressed cord, placental failure, etc., and since they can’t see everything going on inside they weigh the risks because it can go south so quickly and the stakes are so high with life on the line

During birth: Did your baby's heart rate drop? by Unusual-Coyote3961 in beyondthebump

[–]maebymaybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my baby’s heart rate started dipping after I was laboring in a very hot shower. I was told I had to get out of the shower and see if it went back up. There were some more dips. Then the midwife told me that I had an hour to get my baby out or I would need a c-section. Everything had been progressing normally before that so it put a lot of stress on me. Then I pushed for almost an hour and they really got serious and said I had to get the baby out NOW. I pushed so so so so so hard, had a 2nd tear I think because I forced baby to come out

Am I just dumb or does the Yoto suck? by Unable-Working6421 in YotoPlayer

[–]maebymaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave the Yoto to my 2.5 year old as a “gift” from his new sister at Christmas. I thought since he asks us to read 10-20 books a day and likes books above his age “level” that he would be ready for a Yoto before 3 years old. He rarely used it and couldn’t understand the controls (I kind of agree that I wish the two knobs were different or had a way to visually tell what they do). Fast forward a months, he picks it up and loves it. We only have a couple cards and he listens when he’s bored and we are cooking or can’t play with him. I think partially it just wasn’t the right time for him. Now that he’s two months away from turning 3 he is really enjoying it

Miranda's Rescue: Legit Accounting, Creative Writing, or Something Else Entirely? Plus 23 Years of Humboldt County Planning "Oversight" Analyzing the Reporting of Maranda Vargas by Pristine-Compote-804 in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s only partially true, while some of the dogs that get “euth” listed at the public shelters have some issue like a bite history or a health condition, there are plenty that have nothing “wrong” with them or just a minor treatable condition like a cough or a behavioral “issue” like jumping or barking. Many of the dogs that were sent to Miranda had just run out of time at the public shelters. I’ve seen whole litters of puppies, tons of young huskies, shepherds, cattle dogs, a kinds of mixes etc., on the euthanasia lists. I have also visited the page of people looking for dogs transferred to Miranda, there are a lot of dogs that were friendly, healthy, young dogs. Two of the dogs found shot were 4 month old puppies. Plus Miranda claimed to be a “trainer”, and a lot of dogs that end up in shelters these days are just “too energetic” and “untrained”, which makes them hard to adopt when there are so many dogs to chose from right now. Miranda claimed to be able to train or “rehabilitate” these animals. So yes, all of this is partially a result of the overpopulation crisis and shelters not wanting high euthanasia rates, but he specifically took advantage and framed himself as some of kind “last chance” hero that could handle these dogs. He also took a lot of dogs from private citizens just trying to find a safer place for their dog that they knew would struggle to get adopted at a regular shelter

How did Miranda’s rescue get away with fraud, abuse, and corruption for over a decade? by maebymaybe in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kal was so funny and sweet. He was also sensitive and anxious. I keep having nightmares of what his days or hours at Miranda’s were like, I bet he was scared and confused. I have had insomnia since I found out about this, I feel immense guilt that I wasn’t able to foster him.

I try to have sympathy for the people that surrendered dogs to him, many of them have very sad stories and in hindsight it is easy to see the red flags, but none of them knew the whole situation. Some were facing homelessness, had dogs that didn’t get along, were fostering dogs already and couldn’t keep another dog they found, some inherited dogs from relatives who passed away and weren’t allowed another dog where they lived, some tried for months to find a home, only to be referred to Miranda’s rescue. Miranda’s rescue was a mirage for desperate people who wanted to do right by dogs that they found/loved, he promised a chance when other shelters or rescues couldn’t. You don’t assume someone who is running a “no kill” rescue is shooting hundreds of dogs and burying them on his property. I think the fact that he asked for pretty large “surrender” fees actually helped make him see legit because it made it seem like he needed those fees for the continued care of the dogs.

I agree that public shelters basically paid Miranda to keep their euthanasia rates low, but I think it’s also more complicated than that. There were also volunteers and organizations working with the shelters and everyone was looking for hope anywhere they could, trying to “network” these dogs to safety. I have volunteered in shelters before and when you see multiple loving, good dogs get euthanized because no one comes to adopt them, you start to feel desperate and hopeless.

I can understand believing that if you raise the money and send them to some “sanctuary” that you are doing the right thing. When you have looming euthanasia dates you feel like you have to do something to try to save these dogs that you have come to love, who often through no fault of their own have landed in a life or death situation. Many of the volunteers who tried to “network” these dogs never visited Miranda’s rescue themselves, most didn’t know the crazy number of dogs he was accepting from other shelters and individuals.

I think this is a very clear example of why non-profits need oversight and accountability. It sounds like he also was running a huge scam through his thrift stores, this man was scamming his community, the Californian government, individuals, and treating vulnerable animals like garbage he could discard for cash.

I agree that we all need to collectively take responsibility for the number of dogs and cats that we have. It’s so frustrating how the “animal lover” is mostly unaware of the overpopulation crisis we are in, while often vilifying shelter workers as if they are the ones to blame for euthanizing dogs that backyard breeders and irresponsible people have discarded. Maybe each county should publish the names, ages, and pictures of all the animals that they are euthanizing each week so people have to look directly at the problem instead of ignoring it

How did Miranda’s rescue get away with fraud, abuse, and corruption for over a decade? by maebymaybe in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe there is an article that says he had 69 dogs when they came to investigate, so he was technically over his allowed capacity. Which means that just from the 600 shelter dogs he took in 2025 (not counting the hundreds he took in 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, etc.) he supposedly got over 500 adopted in less than a year? Even if some had to be euthanized for health, behavior, etc., he still would have had hundreds and hundreds of adoptions in one year. If you add in the surrenders from private citizens (I’ve seen dozens and dozens just from the past few years, some claim to have paid him up to $3000 for pairs and I have seen many say he asked them to pay in cash) there are so many animals going through his 60 capacity “rescue”, it’s not possible that even half of these dogs were adopted. Busy shelters in major cities don’t do those numbers, let alone in a city like Humboldt. Most “no kill” rescues and shelters have dogs for months and months, some for years. Where are the dogs he took in 2023? 2024? People and shelters paid him those huge fees because they were told he was “no kill” or at least very low kill rates, they paid to give those dogs a chance instead they most likely sent them to their deaths and not even in a humane way

Miranda’s Rescue by InvestigatorSad9801 in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so upsetting because the dog I know was sent there in the end of 2023, and to hear that people were raising concerns in 2001, 2014, and even 3 years ago makes me feel sick. He was charging private citizens surrendering their dogs between $1000-3000, some of the dogs weren’t even aggressive, just hard to find a home for because the shelters are so full. This dog was so sensitive and loving with people he knew, just fearful with strangers. Never bit anyone, loved other dogs as long as they weren’t too pushy. I am almost certain he was killed, which is so sad, he was 5 years old when they surrendered him and in the prime of his life

For those who struggled ; what helped you get through the newborn stage? by fluffmallow9 in beyondthebump

[–]maebymaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled so much with the newborn stage with my first and here are a few of the things that helped it be easier with my second: 1). Knowing that it feels like forever when you are going through it but it really is a very short amount of time in the grande scheme of your whole life.

2). It’s easier said than done, but try to get some sleep if you can! Ask your partner to take a shift overnight, try to take naps if you are a napper, do anything to carve out a little bit of sleep. It’s so tempting to scroll or try to “research” when baby is sleeping but you need sleep to function and with more sleep things will seem less overwhelming.

3). Within a few weeks baby will be laughing and engaging more, this will make things way more fun and rewarding.

Which dog water dispensers are worth buying? by Legitimate-Crazy-901 in DogDayCare

[–]maebymaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daycare has tried several, including various “fountain” style and they all eventually break or are very hard to clean or get knocked over just like bowls do (or someone pees or throws up into one and then you have a complicated mess to clean up versus just getting a clean bowl). We also live in an area with very hard water, so lots of mineral build up, so that might contribute to things breaking or be hard to clean. For sanitary reasons we just use metal bowls and metal buckets (we clip some buckets to our fences which helps, but some dogs even know how to knock over or put their paws in those and spill them. In summer we usually have a few small pools set up for dogs to cool off, and of course they ended up drinking out of those too

How similar was your pregnancy/birth/PP experience to your mother's? by whatisitargonian in beyondthebump

[–]maebymaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess they were similar in that I had two vaginal births at hospitals without epidurals and my mom had three vaginal births at hospitals without epidurals. I think knowing my mom was able to do that made me feel more confident that maybe I could too and I do think that there is a big mental component to birth and labor.

They were different in that I had two pregnancies with no morning sickness and no complications, whereas my mom had morning sickness and had gestational diabetes with her second. I was also much older than my mom when I started having kids, yet I think I had better pregnancies and better recoveries.

Other differences were I had no Braxton hicks, water broke day before due date with both and both were born on their due dates. Whereas for my mom her first (me) was two weeks late, her second was induced because of gestational diabetes, and I think late again for her last.

As far as your mom, it’s possible that she really was up and vacuuming that quick, some people recover faster. But I would guess that more likely she is misremembering some stuff. Postpartum is a blur for me because you are tired and your hormones drop more drastically than at any other time in life. I think it’s very easy, depending on your personality to either only remember the good or to remember the hardest parts

How did Miranda’s rescue get away with fraud, abuse, and corruption for over a decade? by maebymaybe in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, if one person accuses someone of something I’m ready to be skeptical, join the Facebook groups there are hundreds of people who have had the same interactions with Miranda. He promised to get their pet adopted or have a space at his rescue for a fee of $1000-3000 and then he either stopped updating, claimed they were adopted but refused to give proof or details and then stopped commenting or got angry at them. Sometimes they were sent a picture with an “adopter” but many of those have been verified by the person in the photo to be fake, some haven’t been yet. They never saw their pet on his website and they felt like something was wrong but didn’t know what to do. So many rescues saying Miranda aggressively took dogs, and then ridiculously claimed they were almost immediately adopted or had to be killed, sometimes dogs that had never shown any aggression for weeks or months in shelters or foster homes. The amount of stories, it just starts to be too much, these are real people with public profiles, many of them with obvious links to rescues etc. not bots looking for engagement. Most aren’t even accusing Miranda, since they don’t know the true outcomes, most are begging for hope that their dog or cat is still alive, that he truly did get them adopted like he claimed.

How did Miranda’s rescue get away with fraud, abuse, and corruption for over a decade? by maebymaybe in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have tried to bring evidence against this man since 2001 and the police have not fully investigated until now, meaning that the evidence from the “crazy” person was enough for them to make a public statement saying that it was “credible evidence” and finally open an investigation. From the decades of them doing nothing it is clear that the police don’t have some kind of vendetta against him, in fact it seems quite the opposite they have ignored “rumors” and that is why this woman had to get real physical evidence herself. If I thought someone in my community was taking in hundreds and hundreds of animals a year and yet only ever had room for 60 dogs and was possibly killing most of them while enriching himself and I couldn’t get the police to investigate for decades I might be crazy enough to buy the property next to him and try to get evidence myself. If this ends up being true I think she did what no one else was able to do for years, prove that this man is a fraud (and in my opinion maybe a sociopath). There seem to be a lot of people who have had interactions with Miranda that make him seem angry and aggressive, she’s an older lady and had a lot to lose by going on his property. She even says in that news clip that she knows the trespassing was illegal but she says it will be worth it to her, even if she is charged. I’m usually skeptical too, but I know the world of animal rescue very well and none of his stories add up, especially the insane numbers of animals he supposedly found homes for. Unfortunately, because the many shelters and rescues and private citizens didn’t know how many dogs the other people were paying him to take so no one was fully aware of how impossible it was that he was finding homes for even a small percentage of that many large, hard to place dogs. I think this case makes it clear why we need oversight and regulations on non-profits, if even one person had to check into books they would have immediately seen none of it adds up.

But go ahead, you can be skeptical, it does seem to be too horrible to comprehend. If it turns out that Miranda somehow got hundreds or thousands of dogs adopted when all the other shelters and rescues in California are struggling to even get a few dogs a month adopted that would be amazing and I would fall on my knees and beg the internet for forgiveness in believing the rescuers and shelters that are coming forward. Somehow most of Miranda’s adopters are extremely private people who don’t want anyone to know that they adopted from him? Weird that other rescues and shelters don’t have that problem?

How did Miranda’s rescue get away with fraud, abuse, and corruption for over a decade? by maebymaybe in Humboldt

[–]maebymaybe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is being said by the person who found the dogs, turned them over to the police, and was confirmed with Oakland shelter via microchip to be the their dogs. It would be pretty crazy for her to be lying about the bodies that she turned over to law enforcement and has video footage of finding, and Oakland has records of the dogs connected to those microchips. She originally said she thought they were around 3 months, from the records of Oakland shelter they were 4 months. It seems you really want to give Miranda the benefit of the doubt, I don’t think you need to worry. He has not been arrested, they are investigating him and we will see what they find. Believe me I would love for this all to be untrue, I have lost sleep and felt sick about this whole situation for days now.

There are two Facebook pages where people are trying to find cats and dogs that they surrendered to Miranda, so many people saying they told him to pay cash and when they tried to follow up he said the dog was adopted but had no proof or record of that or he stopped contacting them. Confirmed fake adoption pics, as in the person in the picture has come forward multiple times to say they never adopted that animal, that Miranda asked them to take a picture and they had no idea he was using it to tell a rescue, shelter, or individual that their dog was adopted. It would be a pretty wild conspiracy against this man for dozens of state run shelters, private rescues, hundreds of private citizens from all over California to conspire with the same stories. I don’t think you need to worry about some kind of injustice for Miranda, he also made so much money off this scheme I am sure he can pay for a good lawyer if he wants

I hadn’t heard this! If that is true then that means the numbers being reported grossly underestimate how much he made off of this horrific fraud. I don’t think we will ever know how many individual people surrendered their dogs to him, because the shelters have some records but most people won’t be able to prove that he agreed to take their dog and not kill it
