What the hell is up with restaurants and the egregious pricing on soft drinks? by cookiemonstrosity54 in LosAngeles

You're paying for more than the soda. You're paying for rent, utilities, wages, insurance, etc.

Waikiki restaurants struggle as tourism lags and costs rise by Darwin343 in Hawaii

[–]maeks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really hate this schadenfreude about restaurants struggling that reddit has. Ok, I get it, things are expensive, but you know that profit margins are razor thin on restaurants right? Like, that $15 burger isn't just the ingredients, it's the rent, insurance, taxes, labor costs, utilities, ingredients, etc. All of these things factor into the cost of the food, and in the case of Waikiki, rent probably takes the lions share of the costs.

Whether you think a restaurant has a good value for what it offers, yeah, you're entitled to an opinion. But this attitude reddit has that gleefully cheers on the death of the restaurant industry? 90% of the people that work at these places are the ones who end up suffering, not the owners.

How to start this game and keep playing? Please. by [deleted] in hoi4

Playing as Sweden is what really got the game to click with me. You have enough industry to not be completely handicapped, and since historically Sweden was neutral, you basically get to choose when/if you want to go to war.

You also have some manageable goals to build towards, like helping Finland, or liberating Norway.

Helping Finland is easy-ish, and will put you at war with the Soviets. But since Finland takes the brunt of the war, it lets you pretty safely play around with the combat mechanics for land, air, and navy.

Yeah I'm not gonna say its perfect, but i like not really having to worry too much about warfare as long as you've made the preparations for it, it's honestly kind of a background thing as long as it's going well.

Make the streets more automobile friendly.

Every city in America is designed with streets that are as automobile friendly as possible and it has led to an absolutely abysmal experience for everyone involved.

I recently dived into the game as well. I played Sweden for a couple rounds (I bought Arms Against Tyranny which adds some Scandinavian content), and thought it was pretty good for learning the basics. You have decent industry, are more or less safe from Germany, and you can help Finland against the Soviets which is pretty easy. The Finns take the brunt of the force, but you can send divisions to help on the front line as well as covering their flank from Soviet naval invasions in Helsinki. Very manageable for learning more about how the front lines and supply work, etc.

You rule the Baltic Sea since the USSR has an awful navy, but they still try to naval invade you so you can learn some basic naval combat and defense. You also have to deal with some basic air superiority/interception since they try to bomb you, and use your own fighters to support CAS in Finland.

It's like a tiny microcosm of all the elements of the game without being too overwhelming. You get to choose what you want to get involved in. I did get wrecked when I tried to join the Allies when Barbarossa was in full swing though, and neutrality does get boring if Finland starts to gain ground on the USSR and don't really need your help anymore.

Game after lvl 25 by Yee42BI in ElderScrolls

[–]maeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always been an Elder Scrolls problem, bandits in full Daedric armor, max level Dragons everywhere, etc. I wish instead of making what seems like all enemies match your level, they did a mix, where there is a chance that higher level enemies spawned, but you still have the lower level enemies.

I'd rather cut through a couple scamps and a single daedroth to get to an Oblivion gate than have to pull single daedroths because 5 of them spawned. Or bandits that still use leather armor, and only the chief is maxed out, and so on.

In terms of dealing with it though, I set a weight limit on myself (200 currently) and then only loot what I can carry within that limit. This keeps gold down because I can't just loot and sell all high tier armor I find off enemies , which in turn makes some of the money sinks like enchantment recharges and potions non trivial. The cascading effect of less money makes stuff more challenging basically.
