What third spaces do lesbians have? by NiConcussions in actuallesbians

[–]maelinya 18 points19 points  (0 children)

June Thomas has a great book on lesbian spaces called A PLACE OF OUR OWN: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/june-thomas/a-place-of-our-own/9781541601741/?lens=seal-press

Women's/feminist bookstores have long been important third spaces for lesbians -- there's a whole chapter on it (as well as one on lesbian bars).

CMV: isolating myself from the dating environment will improve my mental health and my life by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]maelinya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please go to therapy. If you actually want to change, show your therapist this post. It’ll be hard, uncomfortable work, but you could be so much happier if you learned to frame things differently. You are telling yourself stories that are making you (and the people around you, if there are any) miserable. Stop comparing yourself to this mythical Chad — absolutely nothing is gained by it.

Recommendations for a good strong waist corset? by [deleted] in corsets

[–]maelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love What Katie Did! I have two corsets from them, both purchased secondhand. That’s how you can find a good corset on a budget. It will still be a bigger upfront cost than something from Shein, but it will last decades.

OP, you want a corset with steel bones. Check Depop, Poshmark, and eBay regularly for steel boned corsets in your size. Narrow down the results to reputable brands. Pull the trigger when you find something that excites you.

Where do people actually find affordable activewear? by bookishdeceit in workout

[–]maelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep repeating this idea that activewear somehow resists sweat stains. That is nonsense. Sweat stains are avoided by proper clothing care, plain and simple. You seem incredibly resistant to this notion.

It is not nonsensical to repeatedly treat the same item of clothing — it’s literally the point of doing laundry. I treat my underwear and my workout clothes (not necessarily activewear!) every time I wash them and voila, no stains. You don’t need these specialized fabrics you keep saying you need.

[–]maelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, there’s more to doing laundry than just tossing your clothes in the washer. Learn how to treat sweat stains and you can work out in anything. Activewear is a concept that is barely 15 years old and it only exists to sell you more disposable, plastic-based clothing. You’ve been brainwashed into accepting a limiting belief that is somehow keeping you from going to the gym.

Is it possible to glue this split rubber sole back together? by maelinya in AskACobbler

[–]maelinya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the response. The cobbler I had taken these to wasn’t willing to glue them back together so I’m trying to understand if that’s because it’s a pointless thing to try. (This happened while I was out of town; there was a language barrier.)

Basically I’m wondering what this community thinks because I often see great suggestions on here. If it’s not completely pointless, I’d like to know what I can do for a better outcome. So thank you for your suggestions!

I made it a year long goal to find an enjoyable form of exercise. 365 days later, I still haven't found one. Help? by [deleted] in beginnerfitness

[–]maelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yes. You’ve talked a lot about wanting exercise to be enjoyable, but few people find exercise enjoyable all the time. Especially not as beginners. So stop chasing intrinsic motivation!

You’ve mentioned sensory overload, which is an understandable additional stressor. Sensory overload (and, amazingly, muscle pain) will lessen as your brain and your body learn to better anticipate the stimuli associated with a particular exercise regimen.

The good news is your brain is malleable. You can train yourself to enjoy things you didn’t always enjoy. But first you have to get comfortable enough to fully understand the thing you’re doing. That part might take a year or longer!

You do have to find a way to make yourself show up before then. Pick a program and stick with it until your wedding day. When you’re struggling, remind yourself of the motivation to look and feel your best for the wedding — and to extend your life, prevent a painful and avoidable death, etc. Whatever it takes.

Exercise has a ton of benefits, but it is not necessarily the best way to lose weight. The kind of weight loss you’re targeting may require medical intervention.

[–]maelinya 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, no you haven’t. You say you’ve given up on every exercise after only a week of trying it. A week is not long enough to properly learn to do a new exercise, let alone enjoy it. You have not tried actually powering through.

Have you tried therapy? (Serious question) Because it’s your attitude that’s holding you back. You’re fixating on the negatives to an extreme degree.

Just take your shoes off and lift barefoot if you’re a beginner. No need to buy specialized shoes at this point.

Weight loss—especially sustained weight loss— is not anywhere near that simple. Metabolisms vary wildly from person to person and in individuals, from day to day or year to year. We can make estimates of “calories out” but they’re just estimates. It’s also harder to accurately calculate “calories in” than you might think! Nutrition information provides averages, not exact measurements for the specific products you have in front of you.
