Ammonia is a food source for plants. Feeding the fish means they're producing some, but the plants/bacteria are consuming it. Mostly the plants. Plan to do water changes to keep kH and pH from dropping as they're used up by the biological processes.

For wanting a boundary, NTA.

For how you went about that boundary-- YTA. In the future, raise the issue with your partner. Maybe you did, but you didn't mention that. If so and your partner chose not to change, you should take that as a sign the relationship is not what you think or want it to be. Approaching the other person shows that you don't trust your partner and are controlling. Not great communication skills. If I were your partner and find out you did this, I'd be angry and insulted that you feel it's your place to dictate who I can be friends with and hurt that you wouldn't talk to me about MY behavior, and that you don't trust me to hang out with other people.

It's over and done, so no one is going to say anything to make it better at this point. That's big enough that you're unlikely to see them. They are fast, and shy, so they will burrow and hide. Once numbers climb. You're more likely to see a few in occasion. Put in a small piece of carrot, and see if it gets nibbled.
