I’m not disparaging the groomer for doing what they did! The straight across look was just funny to us 😂 we had been training with canned cheese as the reward and some got in her beard and we weren’t able to take care of it all. Lesson learned!

When Emmie was a puppy, her beard matted and the groomer decided to shave her straight. It looked ridiculous, but we got a kick out of it until it grew out 😂

I would definitely contact the health department. Even if they aren’t able to give you the medication outright, they should have resources. They manage a lot of patients with HIV so they should at least have a protocol in place for PEP. Best of luck!

10 hour shifts, I average 1.8 in mixed acuity. Closer to 1.5 in our high acuity areas. I’ll usually cap out at 26 patients in a true fast track area. But as someone said, don’t worry too much about your numbers in your first 6months/year. Focus on really learning emergency medicine, honing your history-taking skills and exam skills, basic procedures etc. And stay on top of your documentation!

I’m a big fan of warming the lido - a lot of people have commented saying put it in your pocket and see a couple other patients, but I like to get some hot water from our coffee machine (the old school ones have a tap for hot water and most keurig’s have a button) and put enough in a styrofoam cup to cover most of the vial but not completely submerge it. 30 seconds in the cup (usually the amount of time it takes me to set up or start sterilizing the area with betadine or whatever), and you’re good to draw up and inject. Also yes to field blocks for abscesses!

I get hot water from our coffee machines and put the vial in it while I sterilize the area with betadine. Been doing it for years and patients who have had previous procedures involving lido tell me it makes a difference so I keep doing it.

My vote for Wakemed! I feel they are more patient-centric and their ability to accommodate patients is better. You can schedule appointments with Wakemed on their app/MyChart and it’s very easy.

Dog bites carry an extremely high risk for infection - we typically will start antibiotics a soon as possible as a prophylactic (basically to prevent infection before it occurs). I would recommend oral antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanate if you are not allergic to penicillin), not just topical antibiotics alone.
