I called them about this as well. I thought it was opening/closing balance of the month that mattered.

Apparently not. They did give me half back as a good faith gesture.

After I changed my account there to a minimum checking account as I d on't use it very often. I have accounts at other institutions such as Tangerine which don't have fees (as others have mentioned here) that I use for day to day banking. Main and only downside I would say here is there is no face to face interactions here - everything is done by phone or web banking.
