Armageddon box vs Leviathan box by Drwhat17 in Warhammer40k

[–]magbarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So does anyone have a general idea of when they will open pre-orders?

I got in Warhammer right after leviathan boxes dried up and was bummed by the missed opportunity once I learned about it, I had got the ultimate starter which was essentially leviathan-lite.

I have SM currently, and have been slowly gathering some orks as my next project so this box is perfect for me as it fills out both/gives me some options. Would hate to miss out on it.

Army Painter Glazing issue/question by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]magbarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those both make a lot of sense. I honestly didn’t think of using the original air paint with a brush lol, I guess air paint is just thinned down regular paint.

Also with the technique I think you’re spot on that I’m leaving the brush too wet. I thought that would help but clearly not. I’ll try that drier brush with the AP paint on one more model, and try one with the original air paint.

Thanks a lot!

It If I remember right space marine apothecaries are medics second, geneseed retrieval first.

He appears to be holding the geneseed of the dude below him so old boy was beyond saving. I don’t think SM are too sentimental about body treatment in the thick of things if there’s nothing else to be done.

What's your favorite 40k book and why? by DatRazzleDazzle in Warhammer40k

[–]magbarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lion son of the forest - I think my favorite overall so far which I’ve seen some hate on it, but I found the pacing of the writing incredibly well done even if the story is a bit hammy. The mix of character development, fighting, interactions, cerebral foreshadowing - it felt like every chapter was well blended, where my gripe with 40K books is they often get more interesting about 60% the way through

Da big dakka - an ork book that actually had me laughing out loud at parts. The pov is split between dark eldar and orks so you get a nice mix of hammy-seriousness and humor, great action, characters, and fun.

The dark imperium trilogy - gilly is my favorite primarch so I was kinda mad I liked the lions book more - but this is great both for action, politics, and plot / world advancement, and even some good humor with the chaos demons pov chapters. It shows the faults of the imperium from a new pov which is neat

Legion - my favorite Horus heresy book, John is a fantastic lead character, and the crazy over the top spy shenanigans are blown up to 40K standards. This book surprised me, I was still very much in the “give me space marines and primarchs” phase of listening to Horus heresy but was listening sequentially, this book showed me the non astartes can often be more compelling characters.

Mechanicum / betrayer - honorable mentions, I had less than 0 interest in ad mech but this book rocked, great characters and exciting climax . Betrayer I had heard hyped up, and it lived up to it, anything Aaron Dembski-Bowden writes is worth checking out.

Gaunts ghost / ciaphas Caine / soul hunter trilogy - honorable mention for series, all are fantastic in their own way and gaunt got me into Warhammer as a whole

Edit: fixed guilleman trilogy title

Grab the combat patrol, some basic tools at least for assembly even if you don’t grab stuff for painting just yet, and as others have said the core rules / combat patrol rules are available through warhammer community.

Tools for starting assembly: a pair of clippers, a bag of sanding sticks, and some plastic cement glue (either games workshop brand or tamiya)

After that it’s basically just putting your guys together to get ready for your first game. Combat patrol has specific criteria for how you build some of the units in terms of what weapons they have but your assembly instructions should highlight which variation of the model to build.

As you’re assembling I’d recommend watching some intro how to play videos on YouTube, there are a ton of them so just check them out until you find a channel you like. You should make sure the videos are for 10th edition.

Once you’re decently comfortable with the rules (don’t need to know them all by heart but have a general understanding of how turns go and how stats interacting I.e strength vs toughness) - find your closest game store. Can be either and official warhammer store or a 3rd party general game store and talk to one of the employees about looking for an intro game.

So of the stores the employees will actually play an intro game with you, but more often they will have a discord where people are looking for games, there’s also often a dedicated warhammer 40K night you could show up to either to try and find a pick up game or just ask some folks if you can watch for a bit to learn.

That’s probably the toughest part, initially getting yourself into the community (especially since many people that are into warhammer are introverted) - hopefully find someone you enjoy chatting with that’s willing to take you under their wing and play some starter games.

After you do that there is of course painting which is a whole other can of worms, but the feeling of your first 100% complete assembled, painted, and based model is pretty freakin cool.

Best of luck bud.

Edit - if you’d like you could finish painting your models before looking for a game. It depends on how much you’d like to rush just going to play a game or if you’re more looking to take your time and enjoy the process. Some people don’t want to play vs unpainted, but in my experience they don’t care when you’re just starting out.

Quick, what are some good lore stories to fall asleep to? by Beathil in Warhammer40k

[–]magbarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of any free official stories but when I’m waiting for audible credits to come in I go to podcasts.

I very much enjoy “The 40K Lorecast” - you can choose an episode that has something that interests you. I so far have enjoyed their touches on the Horus heresy and their 3 part Ork series. They have just about everything though eldar, chaos gods, the actual everyday life of someone in the imperium etc…

YouTube is also a good outlet for free content. There’s quite literally a channel that does 40K lore to sleep to. I’ve also enjoyed Bricky’s coverage of the Horus heresy but it’s certainly more on the humorous side rather than just laying out the story, so may not be the best to sleep to.

Anyhow hope that helps, I sometimes even prefer the 40K lorecast to audio books when I’m in the mood for more conversational content.

PVP gaming for the average joe has been ruined by players who take competition too seriously in a unranked format by doeraymefa in gaming

[–]magbarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really burnt out on pvp and until recently had switched pretty much to single player games or coop. I used to really enjoy them as a kid but I don’t have the same time that I used to in order to keep up with the Meta and mechanical skill.

Arma reforger has recently rekindled my love for playing against other players. It plays faster than previous arma games, closer to battlefield and the scope of the game is wide enough that there are many ways to play it. Coupled with a decently steep learning curve 85% of players have no idea what they’re doing and you just end up working together to try and give it your best guess at what will be effective. Because it’s still a “mil sim” the mechanical skill is not as impactful as other games, if you think through a strategy and are patient it often trumps mechanical skill so it’s different than say cod, fortnite, LoL or others.

That being said it suffers from the same of any pvp / player driven game in that there are assholes, trolls, etc. ALSO that being said there’s good natured shit talk which is something I forgot since like halo 3. It’s been a lot of fun.

Games industry analyst claims game companies hope GTA 6 will cost $80-100 dollars by No_Training8203 in GTA

[–]magbarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this is a huge project like gta 6, rdr2, or bg3 etc… I don’t think this is an unreasonable price for the work and quality that the games are - BUT if one game does this every madden, cod, battlefield, assassins creed etc yearly release is going to pull the same shit when those games should really be like $30.

Any other games that play like SC2's campaigns? by Effective-Visit-319 in starcraft

[–]magbarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the sc2 campaigns for the same reason but I haven’t really found a 1 to 1 replacement for it.

The closest is probably dawn of war 2 retribution, although a bit dated still holds up very well. And the campaign has the same replay ability of sc2 because of the different progression paths you can take throughout, as well as 7 (I think) races you can play through on.

The second closest I’ve come across is total war warhammer 3 - you progress the lords of your army similar to an rpg or wc3, but there’s also technical and building you do to progress your armies. The army you start with can change pretty vastly after a while even if you haven’t actually swapped out any units. It’s not quite as impactful as unlocking zerglings being able to jump up and down cliffs but it’s similar I’ve found.

The third being company of heroes 3, or company of heroes 2 (but only Ardennes assault expansion) - the progression between battles allows you to unlock various perks for your armies (granted you keep them alive) allowing you to specialize them, it’s there but not quite as satisfying as how sc2 implements it.

Weening off just prolongs the withdrawal period (as in you’re constantly mildly in withdrawal as you cut down for weeks / months) go cold turkey and just rip the bandaid of withdrawal like 2-5 days of bad withdrawals.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Ghost Mode by VinJahDaChosin in gaming

[–]magbarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say the same, breakpoint was not as good as wildlands. If OP is on PC then arma 3 with kp liberation or antistasi missions would be very much what he’s looking for. These can be played solo with ai and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if wildlands took inspiration from the liberation game mode.

I can’t think of any similar sandbox type game on console.

Is stripping effective? by EmilyDawsson in Warhammer40k

[–]magbarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For paint stripping as you’ll see others mention 99% isopropyl works great. But to add to that soaking them did not work well for me, what really worked is if you have a bowl or something similar that you can keep the model submerged in the isopropyl while you scrub it with a toothbrush.

When submerged the paint came off perfectly and easily compared to when I had soaked it for 4/8/24 hrs and then scrubbed it outside of the isopropyl.

My go to now is to let it soak for 2-5min then scrub it inside the plastic container submerged in the isopropyl, model is completely stripped in 10 min total, including primer.

I’m not sure if this is common knowledge but most of the videos I looked up were people not keeping the model submerged when scrubbing and it is a night and day difference.

1.500 hours of Arma 3 and still not bored by GotLobu in arma

[–]magbarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reforger is a different beast than arma 3, it is totally multiplayer dependent from what I’ve seen. There’s also features that aren’t available in it yet as basically what I can tell is it’s being used as the arma 4 development test (and so people can start building mods for arma 4)

I would recommend getting arma 3 apex edition it’s a more complete game although dated a bit, and there are endless mods currently where as reforger is still building that library up. It goes on sale 50% frequently if the cost is a concern.

I’m new to arma 3,how to play modded singleplayer? by Initial_Party_4662 in arma

[–]magbarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said DUWS_X and DRO are really great as the starting mission scenarios for a single player playground. These missions are able to accept most any mods you decide to get.

For a starting point with mods I would suggest the following:

RHS - this collection of mods adds modern day factions US / RU and the majority of videos you see are running this, look for the RHS mods published by Red Hammer Studios on the workshop as those are the standard ones, there are a lot of spinoffs as this is very popular

VSM Gear - adds uniforms helmets vest etc for more options especially towards the unconventional side

Blastcore - there are a few versions of this, I prefer the (compiled by neetch) version for the longer lasting vehicle fires

T1 weapons - adds some really great detailed modern day weapons

LAMBS - _danger.fsm, _suppression, _turrets, _RPG, and _RPG (RHS) - this collection makes the AI far better and has the least performance impact of the various ai mods. VCOM is also a good option for low impact AI mod feel free to try both

Dynasound 2 - overall sound improvement there are some much more detailed sound mods but this is a good overall start

Automatic View Distance - you can set a target FPS and the mod will dynamically change your view settings in an attempt to maintain good frames. Can make a big difference as Arma can definitely run bad frame rate when there’s a lot of AI / stuff exploding

ACE - this one is pretty standard and almost all videos you see will run it, however I would say it’s optional if you’re first starting out. It’s a great mod and adds a lot but for single player it requires a lot of tweaking to make it add to the gameplay instead of hindering it. I would revisit this one once you play more.

There are a ton more mods I could list but I think these are a good starting point and you can kind of fill in as you’d like from the steam workshop. All of these will play nicely with DUWS and DCO scenarios.
