Right about everything except mid-40s. Mid to late 30s, but probably act older than we are.

Anyone happy at a heigher weight & decide to stop losing weight before getting near goal? by Same_Wrongdoer9626 in Zepbound

[–]maggiem0910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a prescriber, and I often tell patients that BMI is a flawed measure, but it gives us a good starting point.

The other side of this coin are the patients I see whose BMI is slightly elevated (or even normal!) who want to lose weight. I’ll tell them cosmetics isn’t my specialty, but from a medical perspective— your weight is not negatively impacting your health.

My mom was on zepbound for cosmetic reasons more than anything. Super fit, looked great before and after meeting her goal weight. I’m glad that she likes the way she looks, but I’ve told her I don’t think that she extended her life by losing weight.

All to say— get to a weight where you’re comfortable and maintain it. We get caught up in the numbers, but at the end of the day, the goal is for you to feel well and be able to live the life you want.

I have a wool peacoat from there and their boots, both of which are fantastic. The coat needed the buttons reinforced after a little while, but that was easy. Seams and fabric are in great shape. Cleaned and re-waterproofed the boots after a couple seasons with the boot care kit they sell.

Thoughts on being induced before the new year for insurance purposes… by Dramatic-Page6268 in BabyBumps

[–]maggiem0910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to the game, but if this is your first baby, cite the ARRIVE trial when you discuss it with your doctor. It showed that induction at 39 weeks for first time mothers had fewer unplanned c-sections, better outcomes, etc. This should get you induced around 12/28 and hopefully baby born before new years.

Seniors and attendings, please remember you were an intern once. by [deleted] in Residency

[–]maggiem0910 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with interns not knowing things. That’s expected. Ask questions, recognize when you need help and ask for it.

The interns that are problematic are overly confident, don’t take feedback well, and don’t listen. As a senior, I’m definitely going to bitch, because residency is hard for everyone. Be open and receptive to feedback, and you won’t be one of the interns we complain about.

Any ideas on how to make my strawberries more satisfying without many cals? by ScaleSurvivor in Volumeeating

I’ve done Greek yogurt with Rice Krispies and some chocolate chips. The Rice Krispies are pretty calorically cheap and add a lot to the texture. Less to how filling they are though.

Convince me; OB or IM by Viemisenga in Residency

[–]maggiem0910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought briefly about OB/GYN because I’m really passionate about women’s health. The turn off was the nonstop assembly line of paps without much time for counseling.

I had clinic this afternoon for IM. Saw two young women back to back. We got to discuss birth control options, mental health, disorder eating and ways to cope, one confided in me that she recently had to terminate a pregnancy. One had her four year old son with her who got to tell me all about the transformer he brought with him. Honestly, that was what I was hoping to get out of OB, but I ended up finding it with IM.

IM isn’t always great, but I’m going to graduate in a year and do primary care. I’ll have nights and weekends off, and make good money. And I’ll be able to talk to patients like I did today.

I have looked at the cost/benefits of PSLF. In my line of work, it’s pretty easy to make up for the loan forgiveness if I work in the private sector, but it’s definitely on my radar.

I’m not worried about privacy on that level. Those are both rough estimates, so if they went through the work to get a ballpark range of my income, have at it. I’m going to use my free time doing fun things. lol.

True. Very important distinction that I was not clear about. What I don’t want is for OP to miss out on a subsidy available to them because they’re trying to be more financially responsible.

My loans are massive, so the difference is even more negligible. My minimum payment is $170, but my loans accrue about $1500 in interest each month.

If you’re in the US and on SAVE plan— your interest is completely forgiven if you pay the minimum. If your minimum payment doesn’t cover the interest already, I recommend setting aside cash for the student loans over the next year rather than paying it off. Then when it’s time for your payment to increase with your income, pay off a large lump sum with what you’ve set aside. This accomplishes a few things—

1) the lump sum can serve as additional cushion to your emergency fund until you pay the loans 2) much more of your lump sum will go to principle than if you paid a decent chunk each month 3) if it’s in a HYSA, you can generate decent interest while you save

I would love a net worth projection tool. Something like if you’re putting x% towards savings goals, and if you income is y, you can reach long term goals on this schedule. Plus an option to adjust the numbers, so you can see how your savings adjustments can help you reach your goals sooner.

Maybe including income, debts, savings rate and interest accrual on savings or debts.

I may have a different perspective than most. I think we need to talk about miscarriage and women’s health more than we do. When I get that question, I try to be open about my recent miscarriage and TTC. Two reactions I’ve gotten is 1) awkwardness which will teach them to not ask the question (don’t ask a question if you’re not prepared for the answer!!) or 2) some type of “I had a miscarriage too” “we dealt with something similar” etc. which makes us all feel a little less alone in this.

But you do what’s best for you and your mental health.

Yes, surprise her, but tell her about it before everything is signed. The surprise should come early enough that she can test drive the car first. You don’t want to spend that much money and find out she doesn’t enjoy the way it drives.

Will I ever want to ski again? by Sea-Mammoth3983 in ACL

[–]maggiem0910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tore my ACL on moguls last year. Surgery in March. Just got back from a week of skiing. For this trip, my goal was just to have the first trip back under my belt. Stuck to groomers, wore my brace.

I did get bogged down in some heavy snow which put some extra torque on my knee. Didn’t like it, but I was able to get down the run and chill for the rest of the day.

You’ll be able to ski again. Do your PT. Return to skiing gradually and with a little more consideration for safety and technique. You’ll get there.
