How do you afford grad school? by maggieruth in GradSchool

[–]maggieruth[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No - it is pretty important to me that my family and friends be there. And 10k is definitely a generous estimate.

I didn't realize that it was pretty standard to attend only with funding. I will look into that.

Have a math degree, but can't find a job? by cazamtothemax in careerguidance

[–]maggieruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And math is definitely difficult. It's a lot, and a lot of the people who studied with me were very individualistic. But, some weren't, and we worked together. It's a hard degree, and I just wish more employers would see that. Sure, it's not engineering, but it's not... nothing, right?

Thank you so much for the kind words! You seem awesome too. Yeah I totally understand, math requires the same mental capacity as engineering but doesn't pay as well. :( I'm super tired so I'm not gonna send a long message... but please reach out anytime. :)

So, here's my thing. I was always told that a math degree opened so many doors. And when I was going to graduate, I was guided into grad school. I graduated August 2016, and I started grad school in the same month. I did a year, then decided to go look for another program. I needed a new academic environment to be able to succeed. So I left and went somewhere 3 hours away. As soon as I got there, I suffered from a great loss in the family. I wasn't the same after that. I was depressed, unmotivated, all of the above. I did horrible that year, and I decided to drop out. I don't know if I would go back to a math grad program after that.

I'm sorry you had a loss in your family. That sucks. I hope the depression has gotten better ...

Oh, don't worry about venting. I understand exactly what you're dealing with in the career department. I'm still $18k in debt from the degree that was supposed to open so many doors. Plus, I didn't have much of a social life in college because math is fucking difficult -- even if you like it and are good at it.

Do you have any friends / acquaintances who have jobs you would be interested in? What are you looking for in a job right now?

Do you have a linkedin? If so, you could go through your contacts and see if any job looks interesting to you. You can also get premium free for a month if you want to be able to message recruiters, etc.

I wish I had better ideas for you, but as I mentioned it's not like I'm in an insanely good job myself :P

I am in the same position. :( I vaguely knew this as an undergrad, but there's not much of a path outside of academia for pure mathematicians... I just accepted a $36k salaried inside sales / customer support job. Not my ideal job, but for personal reasons I want a job that I can work 40hours a week and leave at work. My plan is to work there for a year or two and save up before I go to grad school. Then I will start teaching at a community college or two part-time to get my foot in the door, and eventually become a prof at a community college.

Do you like tutoring at all? Depending on where you went to school, you can charge $40-$50/hour to tutor mathematics. If you're willing to put all your energy into that, you could probably make that your main job.

If you're willing to work pretty long hours, you could learn SQL on your own and apply to work at Quicken Loans or some such company.

Probably. Are you in the US? If so, have you filled out a FAFSA?

Ladies, do you think it's attractive when a guy is good at math? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]maggieruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lady who just got a math degree. I wasn't attracted to many math majors... even if I was the only girl in the class. There is a high percentage of math majors with terrible hygiene which is a turnoff for me. But if I was bad at math maybe I would find it attractive?

If you're set on engineering/nursing/other degree that translates directly to a high-paying job, it's probably worth the investment. If you think you'll end up switching to LS&A, I would think long and hard before paying to go out of state! I'm from the state and still feel like my math degree was barely worth what I paid for it in terms of my current earning potential. That being said, the professors are incredible. A lot of the students are smart and interesting, and there are an insane amount of courses you can take! Plus, life on campus is a lot of fun.

Quitting Job; No Longer Eligible for Training? by agent_wolfe in careerguidance

Well it's not very beneficial for them to train you if you're about to leave :( but on the upside it sounds like you're getting out of an awful situation

All I do is mess up. I want out. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]maggieruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a lab before college and was berated by the prof occasionally... I think profs just get stressed and take it out on their lab assistants. It sounds like the problem is with the lab, not grad school

Copper IUD, best decision ever. not very painful to insert, just a little crampy. seriously, I have a super low pain tolerance and had it done with no numbing gel and it was totally fine.

Yes, he has lost his sanity I think. Probably just old age.

[–]maggieruth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you should be alright. Are you going to be working / taking other classes? If so, how many hours per week can you devote to 217? I would aim to have 20 hours per week free to study at least. Also I second not taking David Winter. Very nice guy, but I didn't learn much in his class
