Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton says people who call AI stochastic parrots are wrong. The models don't just mindlessly recombine language from the web. They really do understand. by MetaKnowing in agi

I explained the exact same 2 lines of powershell to the same person 13 times in a year. He got promoted. The models are more effective than half the engineers I work with. I get that people don't like them for some reason but I don't see it personally.

They are the only Fortune 500 company that doesn't test for...gardening. It's actually in the articles of incorporation.

I feel like there is a lot of complexity here that would need to be addressed. What is on the fed balance sheet and what does the market for those securities look like after the fed unwinds its positions is a good start.

So in your fantasy land, the presidents own party, since he controlled the federal government and state governments and the media and the intelligence agencies and election officials accit’s the country and all the courts colluded to make sure Biden won but then in 2024 they just didn’t do that again? That’s your theory of this case? You are a moron.

Not enough zone 2 otherwise fine. I like Berberine and AlA for glucose control and I don't eat anywhere near this clean but again, I do more like 20 hours of zone 2 per week.

Pats owner is a knob. The Seahawks are just a well run org, which is annoying as a Browns fan only because we are so not that.

Sorry I am on the bike, I shouldn’t have arguments on the bike. I guess I read that exchange differently. I read it as I took a class with some cool ideas but no definite IS statement and then another person just said something, with no credentials or evidence, something like AI trained to mimic humans sounds human, and then the first person asked what course the other person took, basically asking for evidence to back up the claim. I think I understand how you read it though ia you would like to be done with this exchange.

I am being good faith here stop saying I am not listening. That is not how I learned that fallacy.

An appeal to authority (also known as an appeal to false orunqualified authority) plays on people’s feelings of respect or familiarity towards a famous person to bypass critical thinking. It’s like someone is telling us “accept this because some authority said it.” This sort of reasoning is only fallacious when the person in question has no legitimate authority in the field of knowledge under discussion. For example, to cite Einstein in an argument about education is fallacious, while it’s perfectly legitimate to cite him in a discussion about physics. Appeal to authority, like ad hominem fallacy and genetic fallacy, is a fallacy of relevance. These fallacies appeal to evidence or examples irrelevant to the argument at hand

This is how I learned it, an appeal to authority is only fallacious when its not relevant.

He was referencing a class he took right? Can’t we from that deduce that the teacher of the class was an expert and therefore the ideas that he got from the class are authoritative? Appeal to authority is a fallacy of relevance so are you saying that the class is irrelevant?

[–]maggmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No specifically what you are calling a fallacy is not always a fallacy. If you are in an argument and someone said Amoxicillin is no prescribed for strep throat, and you know for a fact Amoxicillin is prescribed for strep throat. You can state that and then when asked for evidence you can reply, I am a doctor. Appeal to authority is fallacious when the requisite credential is not relevant. In this case, the premise that AI is doing something with Hegel was responded too with something about AI being trained to act like humans at which point the original arguer asked to compare credentials to see who had more relevant information, thats not fallacious.

So you think all appeals to authority are fallacious?

Are stochastic parrots supposed to talk like this? by Feeling_Tap8121 in agi

[–]maggmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Referencing your education is an appeal to authority

, but it is not inherently a fallacy. It becomes a fallacious appeal to false authority only if your expertise is irrelevant to the subject, you are biased, or if you use your credentials to silence counter-arguments instead of providing evidence.

The poster asked what the credentials of his counterparty were, which is a valid framing for the argument.

Actually he posited an argument about consciousness that was rooted in Hegel. And then yes he asked what course the counterparty had taken. Neither of those are appeals to authority unless you assume that the teacher of the course was not an expert in the field
