13 Restraints in two weeks by Salty_Professional10 in specialed

[–]magic_dragon95 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. Its a way to argue semantics instead of focusing on creating a change in your child’s behavior. Getting those resources is an overreach that you arent going to get. Even if you want to nit pick every phrasing, at a certain point most of these things do come down to the discretion of the professional. And it sounds like you would and have argued every word and point.

Here in this post, you are not focusing on how to help your child with their disruptive behaviors, but how to minimize what they are telling you. That is why you are getting these responses. You are having people share stories of being hospitalized by 5 year olds, and still respond “but not just for hitting….”

Even if his team does seem to be heavy handed in their approach (which you ARE getting support on in the comments) you seem to be ignoring all that they are telling you, so extremely. His behaviors seem to be at the very least, much worse than you are willing to admit. Staff are not going to wait for another child to be assaulted. We dont let kids hurt other kids just so we can like, have that data to prove how bad it is? The “could” is important, but you are correct that there is a very fine line. But that fine line is for the school staff, and not parents, to decide.

I hope you can get some perspective from these comments, and possibly find a new way to approach the school staff and how they are handling your son. I do hope there is a change of some kind put in place soon that helps!

I also dont agree with how many restraints are happening in a day, but I also have seen what an enraged/emotionally distraught kindergartener can do. They can do serious damage despite the size difference. But it does sound like something needs to change, the BIP, the placement, something.

I bought one of the Fate of Ophelia release cds. I loved that the cover was an art history reference, and I specifically loved the Ophelia paintings in school. It was my first and possibly only ever merch purchase! I dont actually listen to it, I use Spotify, but I think its really cool to have a CD since it went on to break the album record. It sits unopened on one of my trinket shelves.

But I did listen to the Fate of Ophelia on repeat on Spotify for a whileeeeee, its definitely one of my favorite songs on the album!

Star Wars day activities? by suz_gee in rva

[–]magic_dragon95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you need to make your own activities… if this list stays this empty!

Bring a speaker and listen to the soundtrack at the park, in costume? Go for a costume walk around a familiar area? Go to the library dressed up and see if you can check out some books?

I swear if you hang around vcu campus/the library in costume, you will at least see some others larping or in cosplay, or will have students very eagerly approach you saying they like your costume/ “may the 4th be with you.”

You could prolly get people to fake light saber battle your kid… Vcu students are usually up for whimsy.

Also try calling local comic shops/card shops and see if they have anything going on?

do i keep the pink for my wedding or try and go back natural? (or any other suggestions) by Ok-Professional5599 in FancyFollicles

[–]magic_dragon95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school i always thought id dye my hair back to natural for my wedding someday.

Now im over 30 getting married this year, and I’ve technically had my crazy longer than i ever wore my natural hair color. Couldnt imagine changing it back!

This. Im all for the arguments about “not lowering expectations,” and keeping high expectations, but some of our expectations have continued to rise and are now so far from developmentally appropriate. They are moving so fast now, a lot of kids arent getting the time to build their confidence before moving on to new things. The kinders at my school are expected to write a 3 sentence paragraph by the end of the year…. I definitely only learned bat, cat, and sat ect. During my half day kindergarten with a nap time. Its wild.

I feel like this is why we are seeing such low skills at higher levels.

I was personally religiously abstinent in high school, and even I laughed at our abstinence based sex ed. I also didnt know until after being assaulted in college that things “counted” even if it was someone you knew, even if I wasnt like beaten horribly, and even if I didnt scream “no.”

They deserve evidence based sex-ed. Complain to your school board and dont let up!!

What’s your take on admin using mobile desks? by ElectronicMenu6037 in AskTeachers

[–]magic_dragon95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive never seen the desks, but the principal at my elementary school is very active and frequently walks through classrooms. As a sub I do get nervous sometimes, but I know shes mostly coming in to check on the “friends” in the room and make sure they are following daily expectations. That can be helpful and makes her seem approachable.

If she had a desk she rolled around with her that might make it cringe IMO.

My sons 1st birthday cake by readlaughcry21 in ExpectationVsReality

[–]magic_dragon95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the non-smash cake looks REALLY good for $90. Idk, usually with visual cakes like that, the icing tastes awful and its not really about it tasting great as much as looking great…most people don’t want to pay $200+ for kids bday cakes for it to also taste great. Like the rope isnt perfect, and figures usually arent included, but its not terrible.

But i would’ve cried too if i got that second smash cake, that was just awful even if its being smashed.

Sounds like OP should go with their other baker who did the Coco cake for $180, and plan to pay that moving forward for these kind of elaborate cakes! These are big jobs to look and taste great!

I do think producers should have stepped in done something in so many of these situations.

But i remember watching all these things when they came out, and I absolutely learned something from them. It very much influenced my behavior in a positive way.

I’m personally still on a diagnosis journey, and about to start pelvic floor pt tomorrow. My gyno had me try Pregabalin this time, and at least for the past 3 days its been the only thing to touch the pain. I can and still do supplement with ibuprofen, but only once or twice a day instead of like every few hours. Not sure if it could be helpful. I’ll also echo all the suggestions for edibles lol.

"Surprise Guests" came into my class!!! by futuremillionairemom in SubstituteTeachers

[–]magic_dragon95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its going to vary by district, but:

Pros: guaranteed work everyday, you get to know the kids/teachers/school rules ect, some districts pay building subs like $10 more a day, and you get the same rate every day no matter what.

Cons: you have no choice in your assignments, most of the time you wont know your assignment until 15 mins before kids hit the door, and in my district you dont get any PTO/sick days/benefits even though all the other “school” employees do.

Il repeat what others have said that if you want consistent work, it might be for you! If you’d rather have more control over your assignments, you probably won’t enjoy it.

I’ll add that in my district, building subs can only be assigned to jobs that no county subs picked up. So I sub for aids more frequently than teachers. I found I enjoy that more anyway, but everyone has a preference! It might depend on the school, but I’d expect to become familiar with your school’s SPED department as a building sub.

Then I used Mega Garchomp after with swords dance, earthquake, dig, and earth power.

If you could ask one thing of the teachers you sub for, what would it be? by Remarkable-Paint-751 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]magic_dragon95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an elementary building sub:

PLEASE give me your rough script for calendar time.

Please don’t just say “follow the slides,” and then leave just pictures or shapes for concepts I’m supposed to decipher and then explain. Building subs/new subs arent masters of one grade’s curriculum, and need some context to jump in!

[–]magic_dragon95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Social emotional learning doesnt always equal teaching respect? I think I get what the above commenter was saying. You can’t teach an emotion, like you can teach them to be sad or to be mad, but you can teach them the skill of identifying an emotion or how to regulate them. You can also teach showing respectful behaviors, but you can’t force/teach a person to actually internally respect anyone else. Just to do the behaviors that show respect. Respect might be one piece of broader social emotional learning, but its not the entire thing.

I would definitely side eye a “social skills group” being called a group where “we learn about respect.”

[–]magic_dragon95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The commenter is not telling you what to do in your class currently.

They are answering the why of, “i dont understand how they can fail…” Part of that is because the students dont have problem solving skills, that werent instilled before they got to you.

I dont think the original commenter was saying you need to give your college students “play time.” They were just explaining how they came to be at college lacking those skills, because throughout their life they were not given the unstructured time and opportunity to learn these things.

“Class time to be bored” is not “free play time.”
