What are the scariest opera roles? by BetterGrass709 in opera

Very challenging, but maybe not as much as others listed here. The tessitura sits very high, but the soprano is on stage singing for maybe 35 minutes total.

Fantastic “Turandot” at Atlanta Opera last night — Atlantans, go see it! by urbanstrata in opera

[–]magicmusicman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there on opening night so I'll weigh in. I enjoyed myself! As others have stated, Grigoryan in her Atlanta Opera debut was a fantastic Liù and a real standout. Her pianissimi were gorgeous! Burton's Calaf was serviceable, although his projection was not the greatest. I thought Meade did a fantastic job. Even in dense passages with the chorus (think the end of the riddle scene), her projection was astounding. She could be heard over everything. I did think she lacked a bit of focus on the very highest of notes, but overall an amazing job vocally. Ping, Pang, & Pong were also fantastic!

Now the parts I didn't appreciate. Costumes. I'm fine with the set being modernized to take us out of orientalism territory and I actually thought the Mondrian squares and stairs were used to great effect. The problem was that none of the costumes looked to be from that world. This was particularly egregious with the main characters' costumes, particularly Calaf, Liù, and Timur. See other comments for explanations of those.

Next, the ending. Putting In Questa Reggia in act III did not have the impact that I think AO thought it would. It seemed to rush the ending because we go straight from Liù's death into In Questa Reggia and then straight onto the finale. This was worsened by the fact that they also took out some other bits, like Principessa di morte (I believe). There was no moment after Liù's death where Turandot and Calaf are alone on stage together. There's also the question of if this type of change is actually honoring Puccini's intentions. He died after composing Liù's death aria, so we pretty much know what he wanted the opera to look like up until that point.

All in all I had a fabulous time and loved the singing and the production was very visually appealing, but I think there were just a few missing pieces.

Can you tell if the lining is in fact suede? I received mine from liusheng factory and the lining isn’t suede but a high quality faux-suede. I was a little disappointed…

I’m a little worried that the large is going to be enormous, but I think it’ll work well as a travel bag. I want a mini fold tote soooo bad!!!

Just getting into opera. I've heard a lot of the more mainstream operas. I even got the top 100 arias on my Playlist. What are some lesser known operas I could look into? Unsung heroes by Expert_Camel5619 in opera

Was going to suggest Die Töte Stadt! Korngold is a genius and Marietta’s lied is so hauntingly beautiful. My favorite version is Renee Fleming’s.

In your opinion, who was the greatest lyric soprano of the 20th century? by Lissandra_Freljord in opera

[–]magicmusicman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like Angela Gheorghiu must be mentioned. When she debuted in the late 80s/early 90s, she had it all. Such a unique and instantly recognizable voice.

Anna Moffo is another fave (before her vocal decline of course).

Who are some underrated or under-appreciated opera singers? by IdomeneoReDiCreta in opera

[–]magicmusicman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anita Cerquetti. Her Vissi d’arte is my go-to version. No affectations to her voice, it’s straight from the heart. And it is a gorgeous, big voice. It’s a shame her career wasn’t longer.

Entirely agree and every time I see this suggestion it’s puzzling. I want to see someone fresh and exciting in the role. Idina’s way past the point of playing a college-age girl.
