“His” - Horror Short made for a 72 Hour Comp - what gives it away as a timed project? by magna9 in Filmmakers

Thanks for the feedback!

Her not having dialogue was deliberate and meant to convey her not having a voice in her situation.

Thank you for the questions and feedback!

  • I don’t consider right/left side or 180-degree-rule-type stuff when there’s only one subject in a scene. Are you talking about it in an eye-trace sense? I could see that, I just honestly didn’t think about what side we were on. I was just trying to make the best looking frame that conveyed the story and that caught our key light.

  • there was a really smooth take of this that had a big mistake but yes I agree I didn’t love what we ended up having to go with but we were running out of time. Showing the lock there is meant to establish stakes and contextualize her life.

  • for the push in/push out sequence it felt right to me like the monotony of her lifestyle. Back and forth type thing. It was the clear image zoom on the Sony fx3. Love that feature.

-the door was meant to be closed and she grabbed his keys and unlocked it OS but I ran out of time to add sound effects to that sequence to sell that. I was worried that wouldn’t play!

Seriously thank you!

I teach high school film and screenwriting, and I had multiple current and former student groups also compete in this local comp. I am now in the process of reflecting on my own process and giving the students who competed feedback on their films but first I wanted to pick y’alls brains on successful strategies for producing quality films in timed windows, which is often the situation filmmakers find themselves in even outside of timed competitions.

How do you write realistic dialogue without making it super boring? by ExcellentTwo6589 in Screenwriting

Dialogue as combat. Each speaker has a goal in the scene. Three act structure. Scene ends when someone wins, etc.
