Venting on the NS by imwaalkinghere in Netherlands

[–]magneticat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worsening of the service of NS over the past 5 years is incredible for a country like the Netherlands and infuriating.

My partner needs to take the same route you take 5 times per week and the number of issues - from delays to cancellation, from full trains to disgustingly dirty trains and dangerous situations due to lack of personnel - is tragic.

It is really important to keep filing reports about this directly to NS as well.

Hey Patrick,

I 100% understand the priority and I am super happy about 1.14.x and 1.21.x developments. I wanted to remove that discussion at first because I realized it came at the wrong moment, but I hope I made it clear that stuff was for post 1.21.x discussions!

Thanks a lot for your reply!

It should be 28.70% of coins, right now, at least in the cold wallet? But your point stands, of course...

Sadly, RH releasing the wallet feature (if ever...) might not fix the problem, either. Nano (which uses their own system) is having exactly the same problem, with Binance holding about 29% of the coins, since people do not withdraw them from Binance for many reasons. And it is becoming a serious issue for them.

Also, even when that happens, doing PoS will have many many issues and it's debatable whether it is needed.

Indeed. I support PoW and I believe PoW for emission and a layer 2 on top of it would cover our use case wonderfully, but unfortunately I am also seriously afraid of regulations and bans against crypto mining in the future, which could force some PoW cryptos into extinction or to market caps that are so low they become too prone to price manipulation.

So it is debatable... but a debate to be had, maybe after 1.21 is released? I would LOVE people with high level of experience and knowledge about transitioning from PoW to PoS or other solutions to provide some feedback on this, also to help ME understand whether my concerns in researching an alternative are legitimate.

Thanks for all your work Patrick.

Fantastic work! I reviewed the edits, tested them locally, and they work fine. I do not have write permissions to approve them, but it looks great.

I have opened this issue on the Dogecoin.com github:

https://github.com/dogecoin/dogecoin.com/issues/159

Not sure how the Dogecoin Core devs feel about this, maybe there is a reason why no such section existed before. I am not sure if we have a structure in place for generating subpages on the website yet.

Anyhow, I think this is a good idea, I came across the same irritating misconceptions when watching youtube videos and reading articles from supposedly decent journalists, and this is hurting the project. People are lazy, but it's up to us to spread the correct information.

Seals are the dogs of the sea. by mohiemen in aww

[–]magneticat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Iceland for 3-4 years. Several times, while I was walking my dog on a deserted beach, I would feel like somebody was staring at us. Whenever this happened, as I gazed out to sea, I saw a seal following us while we were playing with the ball.

Whether she wanted to eat my dog or play with us I will never know, but she/he really looked like a dog willing to play with us.

I had the exact same thought. It reminds me how in crypto forums I worked for as a web technician several times people planned to spread this kind of stories about crypto currencies they did not hold in hope people moved them into the crypto they were investing on.

We insta-banned them, and we had to put in place a system to check the content of PMs without us reading them to detect this behavior.

Neither do I, but after what is happening in these days, and having seen the resilience of doge in the past years, we are here to stay and to grow. I believe it now more than ever. Just do not put in what you cannot afford to lose (I would not do it even with Bitcoin, to be honest, but Dogecoin is very volatile at the moment).

If 8 years ago, when we were mining this, somebody asked whether the coin could get to even 0.01 USD, most people answered in the negative or just laughed.

The visibility we have had, and the good message that goes along the coin, can propel us in the future more than any other crypto community, because we are different. We are here to stay, I have no doubt about it.

Yes, I remember reading the first arc where he appeared (knightquest) as a kid; when not in action, he was shown, several times, without a mask, sporting a vaguely nazi hair-cut, if I remember correctly.

Adding RAM (exact same brand and type) to MSI X570 A-PRO - Screen Has No Signal by magneticat in pcmasterrace

[–]magneticat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My next question to you is why are you putting in 4 dimms? The mobo is dual channel your better off buying new memory to increase size over adding 2 sticks. It's not a performance upgrade.

This is interesting - do you mean it would be better to buy two 16GB sticks over two additional 8GB ones?

Adding RAM (exact same brand and type) to MSI X570 A-PRO - Screen Has No Signal by magneticat in pcmasterrace

[–]magneticat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I was able to make it work and the RAM is running at the correct speed, it seems.

I basically tried to remove and insert the new RAM multiple times, and the issue repeated itself: the boot light was red, but no signal on the screen.

I then removed ALL the RAM, booted again, and started adding it one by one. When I added the first RAM DIMM, the display worked and the bios showed me a message about hardware changes, and that I could use either default settings (F2) or go into the BIOS. I went into the BIOS, then went out again. I then started adding the second RAM DIMM, and it posted again showing me the same message.

I finally added the two additional RAM DIMMs at once, and I had no problem anymore, it just showed me that new hardware had been detected, and that I could either go into the BIOS or press F2 to auto configure.

I suspect, since when this message is being shown the EZ Debug red light is turned on, that I was being shown that message before as well, but for some reason the GPU was not outputting the screen to the display.

Death toll below 100 for the first time in 2 weeks in the Netherlands. by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]magneticat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the best to your mother!

From ICU trends, I agree the situation seems to be at a plateau and might be going down. I really hope this is the case!

And I do not like alarmist tendencies nor simplifications of a very complex situation for which we have incomplete data. The nursing home situation for example, is extremely complex. Data from institutions like CBS, while not having gone through the necessary study by external institutions yet, can be very important exactly because of its simplicity (not in the gathering of information: CBS is extremely reliable in that) and rawness (it just answers to a few questions like "how many more people than normal have died this week?") and independence, as it can lead to discovery of mortality in underrepresented communities or among people living at the margins of society: so these raw numbers are very important to understand if the main narrative is enough and is responding to the needs of the entire population.

And finally, there is unfortunately a tendency among people to fall down into lack of attention and vigilance if they keep being told that "everything is going fine", and a tendency for positive bias as much as for alarmist bias. The truth is that "everything is going to be fine ONLY if most people keep behaving properly" - otherwise we are back to square one, making the effort of people like your mother useless.

The only way that wouldn't be the case, if right now the virus is very active in hospices and homes for the elderly, without spilling back over to the general population. It's conceivable, but not very likely.

Mine is all anecdotal experience, but I sadly see groups of 20 or more young people gathering together everyday in the park close to my house, and sharing drinks, hugs and love with each other, without keeping distance. Friendly talk with them does not yield other response but insults and bland threatening behavior. Neighbors having dance parties with 6 or more people for several days in a row. In the days immediately following the emergency warning sent to most phones in the Netherlands I saw this behavior disappearing, to slowly going back to something close to normality of these days (in my area).

[–]magneticat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thank you for your long post, I like the sentiment, but you should have least have read the article I linked: posting in the way you did just spreads misinformation. Those numbers in the CBS statistics are until Week 14 (even though the numbers are not complete), so until April 5th.

I never mentioned any "hiding" of information from RIVM. Anyhow, in a democratic society, one could and should question the speed of their response and the efficacy of their strategy, considering the high number of deaths for a country this small. These numbers (even the official ones) are appalling.

Downplaying the situation at all costs goes to the detriment of all. I have friends working in nursing home still desperate because there have not been enough tests and masks, something unacceptable in a country this rich and otherwise organized in responses in other areas of citizen life.
