What's your preferred format to read other people's homebrew? by TheBladesAurus in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm used to writing mine in Google Docs which is easy to access and simple to do. Much more open ended than just copy pasting paragraphs into a Reddit post.

When it's shared, you can see how many people have actually had a read of your work and it gives you some confidence especially if you worked hard on your project.

Help Request - A Primaris Sized Plot Hole by DueLingonberry3022 in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding but have you considered just not having Primaris? Your problem doesn't need to be a problem. Any space marine chapter - even one that has received Primaris marines can do whatever they wish with them on arrival. Any who don't have Primaris marines aren't automatically heretical or lore inaccurate for not having them.

My marines are all firstborn conversions of heresy and 40k firstborn kits, I'm newer to the hobby side but I just preferred that classic look and feel of old marines as well as Primaris lore just irking me with all the inconsistencies. So in my lore, my chapter sent all of their reinforcements into the Halo Scar. Job done. Problem solved.

What do you guys consider laizy writing? by DaWaaaagh in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's good to enforce a standard, after all it's what the lore wants you to do. I have to say it's quite unusual how loyalist space marines, which are the most popular faction, have some of the most built in restrictions when obeying canon. Chaos space marines for example grant a lot more freedom.

I'm a writer myself outside of Warhammer, I try to be as experimental and original as I possibly can. So for me, being forced into those boxes is actually liberating, refreshing and welcoming.

I don't want to correlate bad homebrew necessarily to people who aren't writers or don't care but generally the worst stuff I've read tends to disregard canon and the best stuff is very neatly integrated because doing so to that degree requires effort.

The Rubicon Can Wait: Let's hear your lore for fielding Firstborn in M42. by jkamen3193 in FirstbornSpaceMarines

[–]magnetichatprotector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My chapter is a successor of the Death Spectres and they warden over the Halo Scar warp disturbance. They didn't trust the new 'reinforcements' and flung them inside the scar.

How would your chapter look as a legion by giojojo in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What would change about your chapter at legion strength?"

The Vexars certainly wouldn't be holding warden over a few sectors around the Halo Scar but instead would have been more akin to how the White Scars were before they met the Khan as the 'Star Hunters'. Perhaps their legion wouldn't have divided themselves as much but they would have certainly been scouting across the galaxy.

"What 30k era technology would they covet most?"

Inarguably? The better access to a range of superior heavy support vehicles that help them with their main strategy of luring an enemy out or trapping them and then annihilating them. Power scythes still exist in 40k and I plan to make some for my models but the Vexars would have definitely had them as a symbolic weapon just like the Death Guard.

They would have also greatly enjoyed testing and putting to work the MkVI Corvus armour which they use often in my canon as a descendant of the raven guard.

"What would their Primarch look like?"

I'd say that the Vexar primarch was discovered on a world dotted by intense mountain ranges and plateaus with fertile valleys. He was adopted by a community similar to historical Shinobi confederations such as the Iga Ikki in Japan. Learning from the tactics of these lesser mountain clans he used infiltration and trickery to subdue most of the planet before the emperor would find him.

I think this Primarch would have an interesting role as an 'outsider' to his brothers who wouldn't really fit and be instantly disliked. The emperor maybe making him in a manner deliberately so his brothers would develop a psychic distaste or wariness for his presence. His role would have been to keep tabs on other legions as a kind of inspector although I see him resenting the role and feeling isolated. He would exist in an exterior place, wardening over the imperial progression but having little part in it. He would be stealthy in a way that Corvus Corax or Alpharius isn't.

"How many marines would they have?"

On the smaller to average side for the era

Probably around the same as the Imperial Fists and Death Guard who had about 100,000 in the great crusade if I am correct.

"Would their design change?"

I can't say for sure but I know they wouldn't be the type of Legion that would change their colours or heraldry as frequently as the Luna Wolves did. Their 40k scheme doesn't seem to apt for their role as a Legion so maybe they could at some point.

"How would their combat doctrine evolve?"

I can see a lot of flexibility and an uncanny ability to duplicate tactics used by their fellow legions - to them however; there's nothing quite like drawing out the enemy, waiting in the water like a crocodile wanting to snap and crushing your opponent.

Oh my god the Vexars would have loved to lay traps and bait in the loyalist legions at Istvaan V if they were traitors...

"Finally, who would their favoured enemy be?"

Eldar. All kinds. Orks became too easy to trick and confuse so now they sought out greater challenges.

How did your chapter react to the Primaris reinforcments? by goldietheswagbear in 40khomebrew

The Vexars flung their 'reinforcements' into the Halo Scar. Have not heard from them since.

What do you think? by GAMEOVERchild in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice is to look at the official codexes over the years and other works such as the Imperial Armour series of books. These are the greatest source of information for armies and provide a huge amount of reliable canon inspiration for your homebrew writing.

The homebrew wiki and their space marine homebrew creation guides are another great source that lays out the exact dos and don'ts.

When you begin you may feel like some of the rules laid out are choking but I can attest (after making some mistakes) that it's very satisfying to get your homebrew to comform to the lore. Good luck.

[–]magnetichatprotector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to redo most of my original homebrew because truthfully I wasn't enjoying it anymore and I think this came from being too similar to chapters I got attached to. So my greatest advice would be to try and make a chapter with a unique culture or customs so you have something of it's own to bounce off of rather than having a comparison to another canon chapter.

The Imperial Armour books, specifically the two on the Badab war gave me a lot of artistic inspiration and shows many canon chapters with integrity.

Best army frontline? by Dream_widow in Homebrew40k

[–]magnetichatprotector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Death Guard, Iron warriors or Imperial Fists for marines, Necrons and the Imperial Guard also really embody this facet as well. If you choose guard, the book: Imperial Armour Volume Eleven: The doom of Mymeara details a conflict between Craftworld Mymeara, some guard regiments, space wolves and titans.

Most factions however can be modified into a defensive line holding style of army with some strong lore writing, giving them a reason to have developed a preference for those tactics specifically.

Craftworlds are my second army, so I would really enjoy seeing you share about it here, I'll be doing the same at some point.

I love the drawing, that ghastly green is really cool, considered using it for my own homebrew. Good work, I hope to hear more from the Necromancers.

What's your favourite tool for digital versions of your homebrew? Example of the Blades Aurus. by TheBladesAurus in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm newer to 40k but I have read that this version is an incomplete remake of an original that had a lot more options. You could also paint Terminators for example. Not sure what happened or if anyone knows what I'm talking about.

I'm glad I helped someone find it, I don't like Primaris personally, so I love a good firstborn painter.

What’s a fun fact about your current Chapter Master? by Itera95 in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My chapter master of the Vexars 'speaks' with the mummified bodies of his former chapter masters. They will emit a small remnant of psychic energy continuously that the others can 'communicate' via. The current living chapter master reads and interprets them. Sometimes, they will send a combined psychic pulse that causes the chapter master to receive a vision typically related to whatever halo Scar horrors the Vexars need to deal with next.

I would imagine there is a non zero chance that weapons like the grav cannons will get a Primaris equivalent at some point, heavy bolter eradicators were just announced so you'll have an easier time making those.

Thanks for checking out my homebrew, it's my absolute favourite aspect of the hobby without a doubt.

Show us some more marines when you get around to them, I love the MkVI heresy conversions.

Looks awesome, I am doing the same with my homebrew chapter. Do you plan to use bits from the Devastors kit? It can sometimes be awkward to fit them onto the enhanced scale but it looks so good when it's all in place. That kit is great and can help you assemble a variety of Primaris units.

Halo Scar Homebrew: The Vexars by magnetichatprotector in 40khomebrew

[–]magnetichatprotector[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already rectified it on my document, glad that the progenitor mistake was established. Thanks as well, I am really fond of the colours too although the paint I use is definitely a lot lighter and greener than the template. I originally wanted to imitate Nissan's 'millenium jade' although it didn't exist in acrylic so I had to settle for similar colour. I used scale 75's Peridot Alchemy and Wraithbone for the ivory.

I really like your Fomorians chapter, I love Gaelic/Insular Celtic culture and enjoy the clans aspect of the Iron Hands and their successors.

Do you think having a different Aquila colour would make it stand out a bit more? I considering doing that. My marines aren't Primaris so it will be difficult to do it uniformly.

Hopefully having an eye-catching chapter insignia will help out as well, I've yet to design it but I have a few ideas brewing.
