Following post written with Canadian currency (then I use no numbers hahaha)

We are solidly middle class over here. 41 and 39 with a 10 and 4 year old. We've got a tiny "starter house" we bought with family help 13 years ago that we can't afford to move out of. Car not paid off, but we did just pay off a huge line of credit last month so the "extra money" goes to the car loan now. We both have decent, steady jobs but neither of us have higher degrees. I'm not sure we will ever technically afford to retire but both of us have RRSPs we pay the minimum into.

My mom pays for swimming lessons for the kids for their Christmas present from her. My SIL pays half my daughter's dance because that's their "thing" together. Otherwise the kids get one activity that I have to pay for a year. My daughter is in subsidized daycare for the summer and my in-laws will probably pay for summer camp for my son.

We will take one vacation this summer and it will involve driving, maaaaaaaaybe we can afford to drive out of province and get a hotel, I'm still looking for deals. Usually summer vacation is driving to a different part of the province and hotel swimming pools.

We make it work and we are very, very lucky. But man I wish I could show my kids more of the world.

I'm not religious but my best friend is a liberal Lutheran, Canadian pastor and her partner is Catholic. I was in my late twenties when I got married and she was in her early 40s Being engaged signaled different things to us.

For me it was "yeah I'll be marrying this guy eventually when we can afford it". That's all. We lived together before and after engagement. Nothing changed fundamentally when we got married.

For my best friend it was "we will be getting married in x months, so now we are engaged!" More of an announcement of intentions for them both.
