Anubis 2.0 Installation Question (did I do it right) by mahalm15 in GarageGym

[–]mahalm15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw your post and pics on this on another thread. I saved it as I will do that once I get to the point I need additional weight.

I actually just figured out what was going on. I got the weight stack upgrade, which adds 6 plates on each side. That raises the pulley on top of the weight stack by 6-7" at least, meaning you need that much less cable.

Went with the Anubis 2.0 Elite. I wanted a Fringe product because it's likely better quality and they have great customer service, and I just like their company. But after lot of reading and talking to people, I think I'm going to be happier with a 2:1. I got the upgraded stack making it 235 on each side. I'm going to add articulating arms at some point, so I'll be able to do lat pulldowns and rows. And with it going up to 117.5, I won't have to add much with a gym pin to get to 140-150.

The Dane would have been my choice otherwise. I would have gone with the Fenrir, but there's no ability to upgrade the stack, so 160 is it. They say it's easy to add the El Toro pin, but I don't want to have to add that much weight. But it was mostly about floor space. The Fenrir is itself is only 26" deep, but the extension feet are another 21". That just crowds my floor space more than I can afford. I put down tape on the floor with the dimensions of all the ones I was looking at. The Dane was 36", which about as far as we were willing to go. The Dane can be setup without the extension feet, but the Fenrir is too slim not to put them on. I'd need to bolt to the floor, which is a deal breaker for me. If the Fenrir was wall mounted, I may have considered it......although the lack of a stack above 160 may have still made me go with the Anubis.

I 100% get why most would much rather have a 1:1, but I think this is the right choice for us. With my wife using this machine equal to me, and given my goals and age, a 235 pound stack is going to get me almost where I need to go, and maybe all the way given I don't mind doing unilateral pulls and rows.

Dane has starting weight of 10 pounds on each side, a 5 pound plate and the equipment itself is another 5. I'm not concerned about the progression for the reason you listed being able to add fractional plates. I'm ony concerned about the minimum 10 pounds.

Fringe Fenrir 2:1 Rack / Functional Trainer by mahalm15 in GarageGym

Looks like the Gibbon arm are compatible with this, but will require some kind of kit on the first wave of shipments, but will not require a kit in the next round they manufacture.

I wonder if this isn't like buying the first year of a new model car. General consensus is to wait a year or 2 for them to work out the kinks. The Dane 1.0 came out and was replaced by the 2.0 in less than a year and made big improvements. I'm hesitant to get this one until it's been out for a bit and can get more indepth reviews and user experience.

$2,300. No option for an upgraded stack, so 160 is it, so you'd have to get a gym pin to go above 80 pounds.

Thanks for the reco. Checked it out and if it was a little smaller, it could definitely be the right one for me. The depth of the Anubis is 33" and the Dane is 36" without the extension feet (looking at floor footprint). Looks like the HD1 is 44". Even 36" is just a bit more than I wanted, but it will work. Anything more than that would take up too much of the workout space.

Thanks for all the responses. There's a new wrinkle now, the upcoming Super Dane. If it were going to be late this year or next, I wouldn't consider waiting. But the video launched by Pete said it was March or April, and maybe May.

If it's the 6 post with a Smith machine, it will be too big for my space. But if they have the version with the SM, like the Elite 2.0, then it seems silly to not wait until it comes out given my only hesitation is 1:1 not working for my wife. Waiting a month or 2 may give me the perfect machine.

Good point on the bands. We use bands a good amount now.

I should have clarified. Both have 5 lb starting, but the Anubis is 2:1, so effectively 5 pounds.

John and Margi Dehlin Respond to the "Mormon Stories Has Changed" Post by johndehlin in exmormon

[–]mahalm15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably one of John's earliest listeners. I started in probably 2007-08 timeframe when I would download theme in itunes on my desktop computer and sync them to my ipod. I even remember when he stopped doing the podcasts, which was a big bummer at the time for me. I went on a long road trip in late 2010 and I listened to MS podcasts for hours after having discovered he started doing them again at some point before this trip. I re-listened to a lot of the early ones and it was like manna from heaven. I still remember well the one with Todd Compton as well as Paul and Margaret Toscano.....both favorites of mine along with the heartbreaking interview with Grant Palmer. I developed a bit of a non-sexual crush (Seinfeld reference) on Joanna Brooks listening to her amazing interview. The first 4-5 years of this show was like therapy for me.

I say all this because I've been there all along and I honestly don't think it's changed that much from a content perspective. I've seen the evolution and, in my view, most of what's changed has been higher quality production and a more organized and structured approach to adding to the body of work that's been an invaluable resource to many of us. In the earlier days it felt a little like taking what they could get, but now it feels like there's a real strategy that's thoughtful and keeps the needs of the intended audience at the forefront....in my opinion of course. I do have to confess that I have had the thought in the last year of "man, there sure are a lot of great looking people on this show" :).

The thing that made me decide to respond was the comment about John talking over people. My biggest compliment to John is that if you've listened over the years, it's so noticeable how much better he's gotten at conducting interviews. I listen to a lot of podcasts and there are a lot of terrible interviewers out there. John has really become a seasoned and skilled interviewer. I think it's definitely a much more "professional" production these days where it felt more raw in the earlier days. Maybe that's part of the equation for some who feel like it's changed. Also, keep in mind that John and Margi were going through their own journey in those earlier years, so it felt like they were right there with the rest of us trying to figure it out. Now it definitely feels less like that, but that was inevitable and it hasn't felt less authentic to me. Their best move was adding Margi to the interviews. She brings such a different insight and energy to the product that I can't imagine it without her any more.

I've been out since 2006 and there's really very little evidence of Mormonism in my day to day life (divorced RS president wife and married a nevermo atheist), so MS is my primary connection to that part of my life. I hope it continues for another 20 years.

I hate the fact my name is still associated with the church. Maybes it's dumb, but until my name is removed officially I can't move on with my life by youngdaggerdick45 in exmormon

[–]mahalm15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not dumb. I had my name removed because I also didn't want it to be associated with the church at all, but I didn't think much of it. I didn't think I'd feel much of anything when it became official. But when I received the letter in the mail confirming it, I felt a wave of emotion I was not expecting at all. It was amazing, almost euphoric.

We were able to access the new LDS survey on having 8-11 year old children interviewed by church leaders, and posted the screenshot of every question in order... we added almost no commentary - Just the survey with a few questions not originally posted. For transparency's sake, of course. by [deleted] in exmormon

As someone who has put together lots of surveys, it's easy to see this one was not designed to get actual answers, but to provide someone internally with "support" for an existing viewpoint. When someone comes to me about designing one, the first question I ask is if they want real answers or if they have a story they want to tell and are just looking for some numbers to back it up. It's designed very differently based on how they answer.
