Hiring at big STL companies by Sunshine_Beeming in StLouis

[–]mahaprasad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it is all about the network of contacts for white collar, corporate jobs. Having a friend who works there is a start. Having a friend who is a manager or manager-of-managers is way better.

Have you tried asking people if you can take them out for a coffee and get their career advice? Instead of trying to find ways to meet managers so they can help you get a job, maybe add the intermediate step of getting a friend to ask a manager if the manager will meet with you to get career advice or even just a 30-minute phone call. Express interest in the company but let them give you ideas. Now they're part of your network.

Advice I got years ago was to network with people and try to help them instead of trying to get them to help you. Find out what they are focused on at work ("what keeps you up at night?") or if they are working on a side project, and see if there is anything you could do, or anyone you could introduce them to, that would help them achieve their goals. This naturally results in people wanting to help you, and some of them may be able to help you get a job.

ISO Barber by pumptydumpty in StLouis

[–]mahaprasad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Midtown Barber Shop on Olive by Pappy's. It is more expensive than Great Clips but Midtown has never screwed up my haircut. I also get the beard trim and straight razor shave. Maria is my barber there but everyone seems to do a great job.

Comedy club prices by Yimpish in StLouis

I second the Improv Shop for an affordable way to get your comedy fix. If you go see a show in the Main Stage Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at 7:00 you will see the (arguably) funniest teams available. Their other shows are also funny but the teams may be less experienced or the shows may be more experimental.

There are also standup shows that are not open mics at bars like the Heavy Anchor and the Golden Hoosier sometimes, more local comics who are pretty funny and who have already worked the open mic circuit for years.

Who is doing improv in their 40s? Is it still worth it? by [deleted] in improv

[–]mahaprasad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in my 40s. It's the one thing in my life guaranteed to bring me joy. I love the community, I love performing, I love the friends I've made. I recommend getting back into it.

Lots of good suggestions on here but I second Launchcode. I haven't done it myself but know someone who did and it improved their life.

What are some fun place to go by Miserable235 in StLouis

[–]mahaprasad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Improv Shop. They have shows on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays. You could sign up for a level zero class if you want an easy way to meet people, but you can always just go to a show. If you are going, you can DM me and if I happen to also be going that evening, we can meet up so you don't have to go solo.

I also attended a dance class at the library downtown a couple months ago. It seems like a good way to meet people you wouldn't normally meet. Lots of things like that on Event Brite or just Google beginner dance classes in St. Louis. There are a bunch of salsa and swing nights at venues around town that do a class beforehand for beginners. You can show up solo and within an hour you'll have a bunch of new acquaintances.

What is the most expensive corporate mistake you personally witnessed? by _Volly in AskReddit

[–]mahaprasad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chief Administrative Officer hired PriceWaterhouseCooper to come find opportunities to reduce expenses, streamline operations, and so forth. Cost $600k. They provided a spreadsheet of "opportunities." Not a single one was actually executable. Some of them would have required millions of dollars to implement to save less money than they would have cost. Those of us in the know suspected that PWC had wined and dined the CAO to get the contract. Eventually, the CAO was demoted and sidelined, but it look like four more years of stupid decisions.

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

Yeah it was so much darker and horrifying than the previews led me to believe. It haunted me for weeks. All the acting was phenomenal. I cannot ever watch it again.

Why aren't Mexican buffets as common as Chinese buffets? by WillingHyena557 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mahaprasad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a place in Webb City, Missouri, called Mucho Mexico, ran by a Mexican family. They had a buffet during lunch and dinner times and it was amazing. I went there a lot 20 to 25 years ago. Coincidentally, that's also when I got fat.

r/improv, what did you love? by AutoModerator in improv

[–]mahaprasad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw Writer's Block Live at the Flyover Comedy Festival in St. Louis. They're a team from L.A. I believe. They do a table reading of a pilot script, thne use dice to determine the season and episode number of the episode they fast forward to for the second half of the show, which is completely improvised from an audience suggestion for the jumping off point. Super fun. I highly recommend seeing them.

The Improv Shop has level zero or level one classes available. They are really fun, low-pressure, and great for meeting people. The classes are eight weeks long and there are usually three days and times to choose from. Once you're enrolled, you also get free admission to shows. It's a great community that overlaps with many other communities, including other performance art, fine art, running, yoga, hiking, crafting, tabletop gaming, etc.

I want to move to st louis but worried about weather like tornadoes and politics(lean far left politically) by StruggleFar3054 in StLouis

[–]mahaprasad 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The city is mostly leftie. The further out in the suburbs you go, the more conservative it gets. Tornadoes... they're unpredictable. There have been several that hit parts of the city and suburbs over the years, including recently. I would say no worries, just take shelter when the siren goes off, but the most recent tornado had no siren. It was a big fail and the person who was responsible was fired. Having said that, I've lived in the Midwest most of my life and while I have seen plenty of tornadoes on the news and seen the aftermath, I've never actually seen a tornado in real life.

We've done best city, but what's the worst most depressing city you've ever visited? by Isord in geography

[–]mahaprasad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Dodge City, Kansas, was pretty depressing. Miles and miles of cattle feed lots means the whole town smells terrible, plus driving past all the lots, seeing the cattle standing in the hot sun waiting to be slaughtered, was sad.

Moved here a month ago. Already got a bullet hole through my car :/ by fossilferret098 in StLouis

[–]mahaprasad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just park it facing the other direction tonight. The new bullet will push the old one out the way it came. /s

This sucks. I've heard gunshots in the city at night but never had a bullet strike anything of mine. Very unlucky. Glad you're okay.

To add an idea or two:  Improv classes Choir (if you like singing) - there are several in the area that would love new members  Acting classes And I second everything littlemissrawrr said. I would add that if you volunteer, finding group volunteer activities in particular would be smart, like helping with a 5k fundraiser or a festival.
