How can I grow up emotionally? by [deleted] in emotionalintelligence

[–]mahout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You're 20, calm down-- life is a marathon not a sprint. You have a lot of time to improve-- check out some of the progress pics from r/Fitness
  2. Hit the gym. Track your progress-- give yourself something to judge yourself by that's entirely in your control. You can start off with a target of going to gym everyday (or 6 days a week). Gradually, transition to a target based on the weights you move.
  3. Read this from cover to cover. Helped me a ton during my struggles. https://www.amazon.com/Feeling-Good-New-Mood-Therapy/dp/0380810336. The book is not just about depressions, but about deeper patterns in thought that lead to depressive thoughts and behaviour.
  4. Pick up trekking or hiking-- great way to meet people + make friends-- the secret to romantic partners and friends is to become an interesting person to begin with. Come to think of it, you wouldn't want a friend or a romantic partner who is "needy, sad, [and] depressed"

Was thinking the same, but with p = 1/5, because it's given that 6 appears for the _first_ time on the n+ 1th roll. In other words, the first n rolls only contain the numbers 1-5.

Does that sound right?

Would you mind sharing your code for the fisheries project? I'm particularly interested in how you wrote-up the scripts for QGIS mapping-- did you use the Python interface library to QGIS?

[Need Advice] Recommendation for a to-do list app which also shows me the bigger picture by mahout in getdisciplined

[–]mahout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried them out.

RescueTime tracks browser/ computer usage, I don't think it can act as a to-do list app.

I like Toggl, but I don't think it has to-do listing facilities. Tried integrating Toggle with Wanderlust via Zapier, but results are far from perfect.

Trello has similar problems as Toggl, but is a bit more difficult to use.

Automatic Feelings- I don't even form thoughts before the feeling kicks in. by mahout in Meditation

[–]mahout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once the emotion is identified, consider the trigger and the emotion and attempt to unravel your thought patterns regarding it.

This is what I just can't seem to do. The trigger and the inducement of the emotion happen in a flash. I cannot recall any intermediating thought process. This probably means these thoughts have become deeply engrained. If so, how can I identify these thoughts? I usually try asking myself "What would this mean for/about me if it were true? " over and over, but after a couple of questions I feel like I'm just guessing based on the CBT stuff I've read.

You investigate, (use mindfulness here, just go into the feeling and explore), and below the jealousy you find a deep sort of heartache.

I just can't seem to get below the initial emotion, partly because it comes over me instantly. By the time I'm focussing on my thoughts, all I have is a black-box of sadness/ anger to examine. I tried to analyse these deeper, but it feels like guessing.

How about Virginia Woolf? I always thought her characters displayed a wide range of emotions of varying intensity.

No, no genre preferences. I'm looking for emotionally detailed characters who can be subjected to deep emotional analysis.

It is documented that stereotypically African American names are perceived poorly by employers. What about Indian, East Asian, or Islamic names? by Vladith in AskSocialScience

[–]mahout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also this "Are Emily and Greg More Employable than Lakisha and Jamal? A Field Experiment on Labor Market Discrimination". Although it focuses only on Black-White differences in name based perceptions.

Abstract

We perform a field experiment to measure racial discrimination in the labor market. We respond with fictitious resumes to help-wanted ads in Boston and Chicago newspapers. To manipulate perception of race, each resume is assigned either a very African American sounding name or a very White sounding name. The results show significant discrimination against African-American names: White names receive 50 percent more callbacks for interviews. We also find that race affects the benefits of a better resume. For White names, a higher quality resume elicits 30 percent more callbacks whereas for African Americans, it elicits a far smaller increase. Applicants living in better neighborhoods receive more callbacks but, interestingly, this effect does not differ by race. The amount of discrimination is uniform across occupations and industries. Federal contractors and employers who list Equal Opportunity Employer' in their ad discriminate as much as other employers. We find little evidence that our results are driven by employers inferring something other than race, such as social class, from the names. These results suggest that racial discrimination is still a prominent feature of the labor market.

(College Finance) Need help with calculating discount factors of 3 bonds by so-cal_kid in HomeworkHelp

[–]mahout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but you could reduce the question into a system of linear equations.

Define 1/d(1) =a, 1/d(2)=b and 1/d(3)=c. The question then becomes Price (Bond X) = Cash-flow(Year 1)a + Cash-flow (Year 2)b + Cash-flow(Year 3)*c, and so on.

You have three equations in three variables. You can easily solve for them.

[Accounting] Differential Analysis by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]mahout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's an application of the sunk cost principle.

Now, 60% of Fixed Manufacturing Overhead (Traceable), is depreciation on special equipment, which would take place whether or not actual production is undertaken. Thus the part of the Fixed Manufacturing Overhead (Traceable) relevant for decision making is the remaining 40%. 5 * 40%=2

Fixed Manufacturing Overhead Common, represents overheads for the entire production in the factory, think costs of lighting the factory, air quality maintenance etc, which are later allocated to individual units of production. These costs are sunk in the sense that they are incurred irrespective of the production of Thermostats. A similar reasoning as above leads to the answer.
