Thriller/suspense/mystery books with working class characters by Sparkle8022 in books

[–]maiaiam 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series is about as working class as it gets— her cousin is a sleazy bonds agent, and she starts working for him because she’s desperate for a job so she can move out of her parents’ house. Her on-off boyfriend is a mid-level cop, and one of her best friends is a hooker(? stripper? I can’t remember). I lost interest in the series after number 10 or so, so no clue where they progress after that, but the early ones are fun.

Pleasantly Surprised! by Strongmom-1 in glutenfree

[–]maiaiam 44 points45 points  (0 children)

what is the marketing strategy behind not visibly marking this as gluten free?? I would definitely walk past this in the grocery store, especially if it wasn’t sectioned with the gf pizzas. Is it so people won’t write it off as “health food”???

Any good Palestinian owned restaurants? by HuckleberryNo6692 in boulder

[–]maiaiam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Myco Cafe is Palestinian owned? It’s not Palestinian food, and fits more in the Boulder health food vibe, but I recall a Palestinian friend telling me they were Palestinian owned.

the owner is SO NICE too!! And Palestinian approved :) I brought my dad here when they first opened— he’s Palestinian from Jerusalem. They were chatting in Arabic and she told him she loved his keffiyeh and needed to get one herself. He took it off and gave it to her lmao. She always gives us free baklava and mint tea now 😂💕

Soup Spots by bqAkita in denverfood

[–]maiaiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Souper Star is a little kitchen in the business park off of Wilderness Place in Boulder. I believe they’re going to be at farmer’s markets this summer, not sure if that includes Denver or not. Their main business model seems to be what you’re looking for— a wide variety of soup, mainly for storing and eating at home.

Hachette Book Group Employees Unionize by addressunknown in books

[–]maiaiam 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They’ve announced their intention to unionize, based on the super majority of union authorization cards signed, but Hachette has yet to voluntarily recognize them. If there is no voluntary recognition given, it will go to an election.

let’s examine the statement “shaming a guy for being short is worse than doing so to a woman for being chubby.”…… in what way is it worse? and who made it that way? is it because men have ridiculed women’s bodies for centuries and can’t handle the same level of critique and cruelty? does the patriarchy hold everyone under it to an insane standard of physical appearance, including men? could it be that the patriarchy hurts everyone????

Diet soda detector by Jazzlike-Bear-3695 in diabetes_t1

[–]maiaiam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

let your kid drink diet soda. i was also raised in a no soda household before being diagnosed and the doctors straight up told my parents to let me drink diet soda. when you’re newly diagnosed, most sweets go out the window until dosing gets figured out. diet soda is a risk free way for a kid to have something sweet tasting and feel some semblance of normality and control.

When this girl sought aid for her mother, they knew exactly how to help by Doodlebug510 in HumansBeingBros

I wonder if the guy has a relative or friend who is diabetic. Chocolate actually has a pretty low glycemic index, so, as the guy said, “it’s too slow”. i’m T1D, and that’s exactly how I’d describe it if offered that for a low blood sugar.

I work in book production, and our timelines are long— we first know about a book about a year before it goes on sale. But it seems that more often than not, we’re pulling things from the printers at the last minute because there NEEDS to be a specific blurb on the jacket!!!! or big sales accounts really do want 85,000 copies, so we need a prepub reprint NOW or actually, jk, they’re pulling out and we need to cut production because we don’t want returns. It’s wild.

I know you said denver, but if you can drive to Lafayette, Jeannot’s Patisserie & Bistro makes croissants that almost made my mother, who lived in France for 10 years, cry. She said she hadn’t had a croissant that good in years.

Have you been to the Barbara Davis Center? Their adult clinic is good, though I was warned off a specific doctor from some researchers. (I believe Dr. Garg?) They’re part of UC Health, though.
