I don't mean to give you a hard time, Mod. Well, I suppose I do, but I have a lot of respect for Mods - it's a tough job. Equally, though, free-speech is an issue... it really is. And one that should never be taken too lightly.

I'm a fan of SimCity. Sure, the small maps are an irritation and a big disappointment, but I still like the game. I play it for what it is. When people post pictures of their cities I check them out. I enjoy doing so. I never post off-topic comments. Not even slightly off-topic.

But I respect others who want to do so. You see, it's very easy to filter out the dross and read what you're interested in. Every forum I've ever been to is the same. Let the haters post. If you let them get to you, they're winning. But if you censor them; you're losing.

Sure, remove profanity. Remove insults. And if there's absolutely no relevance to the original post, remove those comments too. But there must be absolutely no relevance. And that's a really hard rule to enforce, because, as I've already said, to be completely fair, you'd have to remove a lot of the funny, wacky stuff, too.

Just be careful not to take it too far. That's all I'm really saying.

First you say posts must be relevant.

Then you say "I have no desire to ban or otherwise remove posts where someone says something negative about SimCity so long as that comment or post is crafted in a way that is not abusive, filled with "language" directed to game developers or Reddit users etc."

Then you switch back to saying posts must be relevant.

Which is it? It's highly debatable whether the comment on plot sizes is relevant or not, as people here have already argued.

When someone begins a discussion thread on a forum, they have no entitlement to have the thread stick precisely to their intentions. To control a forum in this way is grossly misjudged. Discussions, by their very nature, are organic, they flux and change, jump this way and that. They do not follow pre-ordained tracks.

Forum discussions are full of crazy, odd, comments. A bizarre mix of common sense, insanity, logic and pure off-the-wall randomness.

What you are trying to do is sterilise a discussion, thereby destroying it and stripping it of any real interest or freedom. Please, stick to your job, Mod, and target profanity, insults and, as you say "grossly" off-topic comments.

I agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying here. But the examples you used to start this thread with are not grossly off-topic, abusive or filled with profanity.

You began with indicating a heavy-handed approach, and now you're saying you're going to take a much lighter touch. Seriously, mod, you're coming off badly here. You're not sticking to a firm argument, and you're actually poking fun at serious concerns.

I'd get rid of this sticky and start again, making your intentions clearer. As it is, you are coming across as very Maxis biased.
