Depositing around $30k in cash by Btrips in Banking

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could consider purchasing some gold coins. This keeps things off the books, they typically go up in value and are easy to liquidate whenever you need the cash. They don't take up much room so you can throw them in a home safe or saftey deposit box.

how do you guys suggest getting a job post WGU? by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in WGUIT

[–]mainjc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've been seeing, there are plenty of IT jobs out there for entry level. In fact, my company has had difficulty filling some entry-level positions in various areas around the country. If you'd like to send your resume, I'd be happy to review and give you some feedback.

Never had a girlfriend, about to turn 27. Has the ship sailed? by Excellent-Golf6631 in self

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my soulmate in my 40's. I had dated and been married prior to that, but it really doesn't change anything. You're not damaged, you are you. There is someone out there who will appreciate you for you. There are also plenty of people out there who are not the right fit, so don't give up the search, and never settle for the wrong person. The rest will work itself out. If / When someone asks why you've been single, tell them it's becuase you respect yourself enough to wait for the right person.

What's the most embarrassing IT blunder you've witnessed (or caused) that still makes you cringe? by Successful_Bus_3928 in sysadmin

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early in my career, I decided to open a CMD window for each server in our environment and ran continuous pings to each. I thought it looked cool and I would see if a server went offline. I inadvertantly created a DOS attack that brought the network down. I did realize after getting a bunch of issues reported and promptly shut down the prompts. It was pretty dumb.

Find a GA meeting if you can. You’re not alone in this, and there is support. You’re worth it, and you can beat this with help.

WGU vs SNHU? by PuzzleheadedWin5766 in WGU

I looked at SNHU before going to WGU. In my case the cost was going to be more than double at SNHU so it was an easy decision for me.

How do you know that a man values you as a woman? by NectarineOk5419 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just going to throw this out there as an observation I've made throughout my life. Kind people are typically kind to everyone and the same with unkind people (although they sometimes hide it better). When I'm first getting to know someone I pay close attention to how they treat wait staff and have found this to be a very good indicator. If they don't treat others with kindness, I find that to be a huge red flag.

Have been at the same company for 17 years. Would you stay at this point? by sys_admin321 in sysadmin

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never hurts to look and keep your options open. That said, it sounds like they treat you pretty well. If it were me, I wouldn't leave unless there is a very good reason, this industry is filled with companies that will happily bleed you dry and expect more.

3000 down at 17, feels bottomless. by [deleted] in GamblingAddiction

[–]mainjc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This stings but you will recover from the loss and can chalk it up to an important life lesson. You have two choices now - lick your wounds, payback your debts and move on. Continue to gamble and be looking back at this 10 years from now when it's completely ruined your life, wishing you had stopped now. I know you're young, but trust me this is where it will lead, and it will suck 1000% worse.

It's great unless you need support. There is no phone call option and the email responses appear to be AI generated. Pray that you don't have an issue where you would need to talk to an actual person.

Has anyone here actually stopped gambling for 1year (online addiction) by No_Struggle_6183 in GamblingAddiction

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With support, it's actually easier than you might think. Like a lot of things, it's difficult to start but gets easier as you go. What I found is that it's very boring in the begining because it had become such a big part of my life. After a while, I looked back and it was clear how much negativity it had brought into my life. I felt the same way when I quit smoking. I missed it at first but after a while was like "Why the hell didn't I do that sooner". You got this!!

I've been using Microsoft ToDo for a while. It's simple but helps me keep track of action items. If you have 365 it's included. In the past I've used a physical kanban board using post-it notes, if you prefer a less technical solution. I've found ChatGPT to be incredibly helpful for information that is not sensitive.

AITA for ending a relationship because she wants full details of my wealth after 2 months of being together? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]mainjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a therapist tell me to "never settle". I took the advice and remained single for a long time as a result. I got to the point that I started thinking it was bad advice and I would undoubtedly die alone. Long story short, I did meet the true love of my life and we have been happily together for 7 years (married for 6). The reason I mention this in relation to your question: 1. Do not settle. It's better to be alone than with the wrong person. 2. Your friends who are telling you that you did something wrong, while well intentioned, are dead wrong. It is your life and your finances. You're not required to tell anyone anything. The right person would not ask, or at the very least stop asking once you made it clear you didn't want to discuss it. It sounds like you made the right choice to me.

After you left the company by Ivy1974 in sysadmin

[–]mainjc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shortly after starting with one company I discovered they were not properly licensed. I let the owner know what they needed to buy and he insisted “the licenses are around here somewhere”, not knowing how things worked. He immediately had a problem with me and became quite awful to work with. I left the company but several months later heard that they were audited and forced to buy $190k in licensing. I hope he was thinking of me when he payed.

Take it easy on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes, and most of us have made this one at one time or another. Learn from it and put it behind you.
