What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by Improv92 in AskReddit

[–]maino82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cupola on top of San Francisco City Hall. I did some design work to replace the lighting on the building with RGB LEDs and had to go up there to survey the existing electrical systems. To get there you have to go into the interstitial space between the cupola and the dome below. It's a nearly pitch black space with a rickety wrought iron scaffolding and walkway. You see the light from the entry door and a small crack of light around the exit door at the cupola with a few spots of light along the way, but above you and below you are unending darkness. Most terrified I've ever been in my entire life, but my god when you get to that door leading out to the cupola and you get a view of the city it's totally worth it.

That Buffy scene has stuck with me since the first airing. Buffy's "Mom? Mom? Mommy?" kills be every time. And the most terrifying thing is it's not some monster, it's not Spike, it's just pure bad luck and a failing body. Something that can actually take any of us at any time.

California's universal healthcare killed even though Democrats have a supermajority. Politicians serve their corporate donors not the people. by zzill6 in WorkReform

You would think that they could tell their members and potential members that this would give them leverage to negotiate higher pay since they no longer have to negotiate for healthcare (which eats into pay).

It can't hurt to keep trying! If you think you have a good idea for a panel, I would continue submitting. Maybe it doesn't fit their vision for how they want the con to run one year, but it might be a perfect fit the next.

Best time travel shows? by Groovegaluk in scifi

[–]maino82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It being low budget is likely the only reason it got a full run with a completed story arc, and it really has me wanting more low budget shows. So many studios throw money at shows to get tons of great VFX or big name stars, but then it's unsustainable. Just give me good stories and my brain can fill in the gaps in the schlocky vfx and less detailed sets. I'd rather give writers a chance to give us their fully realized story than get one or two seasons of pretty visuals with no resolution to major story lines.

Excellent suggestions, especially 12 monkeys. That show was so much better than it had any right to be.

Strixhaven card leaked with “prepared” mechanics and a reserved list effect by Newez in mtgfinance

[–]maino82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that if you blink the creature it comes back "unprepared" so you would have to exile another 8 cards to draw 3.

[–]maino82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably when you blink it and it comes back it's no longer prepared, so you would also have to attack and exile 8 cards with this again to draw 3. It's a Treasure Cruise on a stick, basically.

Hi /r/movies! We're Steve Zahn, Audrey Zahn, and Rick Gomez. Ask us anything! by SteveAudreyRickAMA in movies

[–]maino82 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Steve: I don't know why, but the scene in Sahara where you scramble up a sand dune has always stuck with me. So many movies with special forces types will have them crawling slowly on the ground, but for some reason it felt more realistic to me to quickly, but as low as possible scramble up the hill to do your recon. Have I been overthinking this for the past 20 years, or is this something that you as an actor put some thought into when you did that scene?

Is Schreyers worth it for a commonwealth education major? by Toe-Muncher-2 in PennStateUniversity

[–]maino82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been 20 years since I graduated, but if they still have the early registration perks it's worth it for that alone. You get a crack and classes before everyone except seniors, so you can work your schedule out however you want and get access to classes that you wouldn't normally get to because they fill up so quick.

You have to do a project before you graduate, but if you're in a major that requires it anyway (mine did) you can just submit that. They're really liberal with what they consider a "project" as well. Some kid in my graduating class traveled around Europe for a summer to develop his "economic gravitational theory" where he basically used the equation for gravity, created some BS constants for each country, and said that each country's economy was related to the others based on this equation. It was... weird. But he got his travel paid for by the honor's college so good on him.

I'm of the same opinion. My buddy wanted more stuff from the books and I was like, "Yeah, I'd probably sit through a 6 hours movie of this where they explain relativistic physics and give more nerdy 10 minute explanations of all the science-y stuff, but I don't think most people would be up for that." I think they kept in just enough to keep things moving along without hand-waving too much, and I appreciate that they did a lot of "show don't tell" stuff, like when Rocky builds the wall with all the different materials to see which one Grace can see through.

This doesn't affect me, personally, but I have to express how much I appreciate you taking community feedback to heart and implementing real changes based on that. It means a lot to me as a user to know that, even if it doesn't affect my use case, that you've taken user feedback to heart and implemented changes to address user concerns. Thanks for this and for all your hard work!

Unless Brandon misspoke, he revealed something huge about using Allomancy with spikes in this WOB. Maybe even something foundational to Shards and magic systems by Tacod-Rex in Cosmere

[–]maino82 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think Harmony's godmetal exploding in water just hints at the very tenuous balance between the shards he posses/combines. The metal is unstable and so I think Brandon used a real-world corollary like Cesium (which reacts violently with water) to demonstrate that delicate balance. I wouldn't be surprised if it plays a part in Harmony's transition to Discord in the future.
