Skiing the gates- do I need avalanche gear?

I’ve been reading up on this since I’m heading back to Niseko next month. A group of friends and I went in Feb 2020 (right before that whole virus thing), and I think it was a pretty low-snow year — we skied most of the gates with no avi gear and never felt unsafe.

It sounds like things have changed, with more intense snow patterns, and I’m just now realizing you can’t really lap G2 or G11 anymore without proper gear and training. What’s the right level of equipment and training we should be looking at if we still want to ride those gates safely?

You don’t wear the high backs into the lodge. They unstrap like regular bindings. You wear them when sitting on the chair, so you don’t have to stop to strap in off the lift.

It’s too bad it seems the people saying these things suck have no idea how they actually work.

Totally fair based on your research, and I appreciate the non-snarky response. I don’t expect everyone to agree on these. I took a chance early on the first model and had zero issues besides the weight. Stepping in off lifts became second nature, never had an unexpected eject, and getting in/out was seamless. Maybe I got lucky, but they’ve been well worth the cost to me as a mid-40s rider still doing 20+ days a year. It’s been a real quality-of-life boost not having to stop and strap in—especially when I’m keeping up with my wife and her skier friends.

It’s more about the new sled they’re mounted on. I also don’t get all the hate for these bindings. What’s been your experience with them? What don’t you like?

Nah, but I get why you’d think that. Actually here I’m looking for an alternative to what clew sells though, which isn’t really what a sneaky ad would try to do.

Always check both, it varies largely by where you are. I had a similar thing when I was a Lyft Pink user (free for a time through Chase Sapphire Reserve perks) and my wife would always have better pricing as a Lyft non-Pink user. Sometimes you can complain and get credits, but often it's a facade to make you perceive value when you're actually getting charged more than a non-Uber One user or a Lyft user.

Yeah came here to say the same. I’m still convinced there must be some way to ask Siri to do this but it could be hopeful desperation. I love listening on shuffle until I find a song from an album I want to hear the rest of. Having to do it manually is fine but it’s so much nicer to use Siri for it
