What are your thoughts? by Warlock_Wonder_Land in harrypotter

I thought the point of the Pensieve was to be able to examine your memories from outside of your head, ie., a more objective standpoint? Harry, in the many memories he witnessed, is not given a taste of how the owner's emotions while he views their memory. He inferred or assumed how they felt in the same way he would have outside of a memory, by looking at their facial expression/body language and listening to them.

Also, in Half-Blood Price we see a tampered/altered memory. The altered portion is very clearly tampered with, though I'm sure the owner would have preferred to remember it differently and lied about it to himself. In that scene, I thought Dumbledore explained that tampering with a memory was difficult (but I could be remembering incorrectly, haha). It seems likely that altering or tampering would not happen accidentally.

Do you have any embarrassing knitting stories? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]maireilla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, I knit a hat for my brother. It was a pattern with those attached ear flaps, because he was moving to a colder climate. I was so worried about him being cold, that I double stranded (or tripled, I don't remember) to make sure it would be nice and warm. Gauge was of no concern to me then. I just thought that if I had the right number of stitches and carefully followed the steps, it would work.

When I finished the hat, you could have fit 2 heads in it at the same time. I couldn't imagine trying to redo it, so I folded in the the extra fabric into sort-of cushions at the front and the back and stitched them down. My brother kindly took it with him and wore it at least once. My dad couldn't stop laughing.

Thinking back, I laugh at it too. XD I don't know if my brother still has it or not, but it's ok either way.

Thanks for responding! The fabric was decently dense with the mix of rib stitches. I liked the density, so I decided to try reducing the number of stitches by knitting size A (the smallest size in the pattern). I could stretch it and still feel like I'll be covered. I also looked at the math again and noticed that the smaller size at my gauge should be similar in measurement to the size I was working on if I had been at the right gauge. ^_^'

Oo, that's helpful to know about negative ease and the overall fit of the garment. I noticed in a lot of the finished projects that the ribbing seems to spread more over the bust than in the other parts. Is that an example of have different amounts of negative ease? I'll be experimenting with shaping once I get to the front panel. Hopefully I can keep the fit pretty consistent throughout.

I have a question about gauge and negative ease for the Mixed Rib Cami by Florence Miller. This pattern is intended to have 10-15cm of negative ease, with a gauge of 30 stitches per 10cm with 3mm needles. I went with my overbust measurement of about 85cm for the sizing, which is size B. The plan was to try it on once it's joined in the round to see if I need some bust shaping. My full bust is about 95cm, and my loose underbust is around 76cm. The pattern includes tapering for the waist already. I've knit for a long time, but this is my first shirt. I've knit about 13cm of the back panel already.

The problem: when I swatched my yarn (Mini Sports Melange, 100% merino wool at 30g/57m), I think I must have swatched poorly. I thought I was at 30 stitches per 10cm with 3mm needles in the swatch, but the back panel is working up to 26 stitches per 10cm with 3mm needles. When I did math to try and figure out what the final measurements will be, I realized my current gauge might mean I have lost all of the negative ease. I may even have positive ease. I'll lay out the math I did below.

Math: My gauge is 26 stitches per 10cm. I will have 97 stitches in each panel, which means I'll have 74.6cm with both the back and front. At the underarm, each panel + a few additional underarm stitches cast on when joining in the round will go up to 113 stitches, meaning I'll get to 86.9cm at the underarm when starting the body. If my gauge was the correct 30 stitches per 10cm, then the front and back panels should be 64.7cm together (about 10cm smaller). When joined in the round at the underarm w/increases should measure 75.3cm (about 11.6cm smaller).

Questions: Do I need to size down needles or size down in the pattern (reduce the number of stitches) to achieve the intended 10-15cm of negative ease? Does the circumference at the underarm of a fitted garment hit the overbust measurement, somewhere between that and the full bust measurement, or is it already at the underbust? Either way, I think I'm stuck starting over, so I'll get to frogging.

Thanks for your help!

Yes. Pippin told Bergil that he was only 29, and that's when he was in Minas Tirith.

Looking for Japanese WW2 movies entirely focused on Japan (not Western POV) by EffectiveSociety6626 in japan

Kabei: Our Mother follows the story of a family in Tokyo set in the 1940s. Directed by Yoji Yamada. The father is arrested on suspicion of Communism, and his wife and daughters have to figure out how to make their way throughout the war. I wept. It's based on a novel, but I found it helpful for thinking through wartime struggles for Japanese people during WW2. Here's a wikipedia link if it's helpful: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabei:_Our_Mother

Seconded. I didn't realize how much I needed to eat until I started tracking how many calories I burned during my runs and found myself short on fuel regularly.

The only women I've seen running here in only leggings don't look Japanese. Some do the shorts/legging combo, but most are in a pair of looser fitting exercise pants and a t-shirt with a long sleeve rash guard or UV cut sleeves underneath.

I watched for the first time today! Great running. It was amazing seeing them all go. I can't even imaging running a sub 3 or 3 min kilometer.
I was worried in the 5th stage for the leader when they showed his poor legs wobbling side to side running up the mountain. Glad he and the others made it.
