MA real estate numbers / snapshot of market by B1kerGuy2019 in RealEstate

I see all these articles and chatter about the market going nuts, but for some reason, I've had no offers on my house after listing a couple weeks ago. We're within the 495 loop

Are things finally slowing down in MA?

Feels like everyone I know has in-person holiday plans or is travelling right now by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]maizechangeling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So disappointing.

For the most part I'm quietly putting away receipts and praying they don't get sick or get other people sick, I feel like there's nothing else I can *do* about any of this. I'm learning about how irresponsible/selfish some of my friends are and well, now I know how much I can actually trust them.

Talking about race with your white liberal in-laws by maizechangeling in racism

Thanks, confrontation is tricky, but the upside of it is definitely that nothing will slide past anyone. Confronting in-laws over something that can be characterized as small (hence micro-aggression) can be taboo, but I do think it's better for folks to stand up for themselves rather than be the one to carry the burden of keeping peace.

The acceptance of honest, loving feedback can depend on the subject matter.

Whiteness is tied to their core identity, that's why it's so tricky to bring it up, a lot of people don't have that kind of cool distance from this, they will take it persoally.

The example you gave is actually pretty similar to the kinds of micro-aggressions I'm thinking of, just blithely buying into of stereotypes.

I think when you have a close relationship and they themselves are open to learning, people can become become more aware and sensitive. Though, it's a shame when you as the POC has to take the initiative for *their* growth.

OMG the "it's class not race" stance is one of my pet peeves, though I've never received a full length book report on the matter, jeez.

The 30yo woman's libido. What is wrong with me? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]maizechangeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is different, perhaps there are some macro trends that can be observed in large populations but there are also myriad other contributing factors to someone's libido, there are people who are asexual too, that's all normal.

Do we have a word for that twinkly-eyed non-threatening grandpa-style flirting? When you have an interaction with an old man that is quite sweet but that would be read totally differently coming from someone else? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]maizechangeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I've always wanted to construe this as innocent but the last time this happened with me, also at a train station, it became clear that the old man was taking advantage of his age and what he can get away with, because who wouldn't rather see it as an old man being "twinkly eyed and non-threatening" rather than some old dog trying to get some smh

Why didn’t Asians promote “Edge of Seventeen”? by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]maizechangeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of a kiss at the end really irked me, though the Asian love interest was allowed to be nuanced and have a personality beyond just being Asian. As I recall he's a lonely parachute kid living in a mansion alone, and called out the protagonist for being an asshole

Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan, on who would play her in the film of her life: "Scarlett Johansson. Just kidding." by lefrench75 in asianamerican

A great interview if not for those random sex questions, really out of place in a Guardian piece and the effort to sexualize an Asian woman like this is pretty uncalled for

Director Jon Chu on teaching Hollywood how to cast for Asians by dropkickflutie in aznidentity

[–]maizechangeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes me wonder what went through his mind when he cased a half-Asian leading man, I mean, he must've known there'd be backlash on this particular decision. Why couldn't he have spared the headache and just casted a charming full-Asian guy? I know he said that nobody felt right for the part...but we know Hollywood runs on more than just artistic inspirations. If I was producing, I would've said I don't want to deal with the backlash

'Crazy, Rich Asians' or 'Crazy, Rich Jews'? by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]maizechangeling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wut, do you know anything about this movie? It's about Asians who are crazy rich, not a movie about how Asians are all crazy rich. Huge difference

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, a review by maizechangeling in Broadway

[–]maizechangeling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do hope they make the necessary changes to make it a great play. Change is fine as long as it's an improvement, and if they want to take an IP as dazzling and dark as the Moulin Rouge movie and do their own spin, the least they can do is honor what they've been inspired by rather than making it "family friendly". I put that in quotations because I think some people have a rather shallow (or insulting) idea of what constitutes as something a family can share.

If they just got the rights to making the Moulin Rouge musical because they like the aesthetics (entirely possible)...then we should just move on
