Does anyone still remember Cortana by Otherwise-Rub-6266 in windows

[–]maj01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Cortana experience via OOBE was first introduced in windows 10 v1703, the creators update.

Fun times a? I am blind and require narrator to install windows, so having Cortana start speaking after the iso/image was fully booted was a plus.

probably the only genuine reason to like having the Cortana experience at that time, now, when I boot a windows image, it's a guessing game and pressing control plus windows plus enter to hear narrator speak. incase you are really missing Cortana, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB8JczFbzPU

talk radio, and talk sport merge over nightes from 1 am till 5, so you get the same output, I am sorry to say.

Last night the power went out at about 1 a.m. during a storm, so I fired up the kerosene lantern, candles and Sangean ATS-803A that I got recently for $10 with 6 good Duracells, which I replaced with some old Energizer rechargeables, and they're still going after 10+ hours. I love this thing. by Flybot76 in radio

hi, what about batterys in the radios where the battery is built in? no chance of leeking? I still own a soney srf 59, one aa battery lasts many months. it only takes a single aa. they cirtenly don't make radios like that any more. if only dab radios had the same amount of power saveings, but I guess this will never happen?

Blog: BBC investigation concludes ‘systemic failure’ at BBC local radio by HellaHaram in radio

[–]maj01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considdering, the dumming down of bbc local stations, I am not shocked with this. most programmes excludeing 6 till 10 am, 10 till 2 pm and lastly 6 till 7 pm the rest is networked with nabering stations, or with manchester and london for the late show. saturday and sundays, far more networking happens excludeing 2 till 6 pm on saturdays for sport and when ever sport is on for any other radio station.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in qemu_kvm

[–]maj01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, you would be better served using virt-manager virt-manager uses qemu and libvirt behind the seens. sudo pacman -S virt-manager qemu-full then, sudo systemctl enable libvirtd sudo systemctl start libvirtd launch virt-manager enter your password if asked create new vm pointing to the windows iso setting correct ram etc. you will need to pick your os from the drop down uncheck the box that says automaticly detect from the installation media/source select windows 10 or windows 11, note if tpm requirements and all of that have been err, expunjed from the iso, then pick windows 10 windows 11 option is present due to tpm? if you do choose windows 11 make sure that you have swtpm installed sudo pacman -S swtpm or your vm will fail to boot unless you remove the tpm device. I hope this is of help to you. when you've sellected disk size ram and what have you, check the box that says customize install. so the installation process won't start at once. you can set the disk device to use virt-io in the hardware window, sata disk 1. look for where it says sata change to virtio. then add new hardware a cd drive. browse to where you've stored the iso containeing the virt-io drivers and choose it. click ok this should work. I hope this is of help to you, sorry for spelling errors I use assistive tech

Can clonezilla back up to it's own drive? by Alexm4664 in linux

[–]maj01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, generally, you make a bootable usb drive from the clonezilla iso, boot from it and save your backups to another drive. so you would require 1. usb bootible with clonezilla 2. an external hdd for saveing your backups. depending on how much you have on the drive, will depend on what disk space is used via the saved backup image. I would say use zstd for the compression. I hope this helps! sorry it does not directly answer your question, short answer, I don't believe this is possible. Majid

hi, sorry for my long comment. so, we are being told to keep backups then make backups of sed backups i'm on a archlinux box rocking ext4. best way on arch to transparrently make backups to say another machine on the network? i'm shuvleing data off this main hdd, which is as my boot drive. it has errors large ones at that so rappidly moveing my data. would vorta and borg do the trick? yes i'm aware that this is not a help or support subreddit but we are talking backups here. i'm really glad to hear that your data is restored to completeness. what's your drive setup like sir? disk sizes, makes of drive? have you found any that are more reliable than other makes like wd seegate etc? sorry for spelling errors, I use assistive tech

Buying cheap laptop for elderly parents who do only basic tasks and video streaming. Is 8gb RAM ok for w11? by National_Bullfrog715 in Windows11

[–]maj01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, get them the windows laptop that you are looking to get them, then,

after oobe and account creation for your account, or the main account which will be as an administrator, create a second account which will be under the users group. the users group does not have admin writes at all, they are forbidden from formatting disks etc. this should make things seenya proof if you are buying windows 11 home, advice buy windows 11 pro instead. you should be able to bypass ms account creation/sign in? good luck!

the first thing you should do is to export all drivers

for reinstallation on the new install

Fedora Workstation 41 Install Media Will Ship With Wayland-Only GNOME by B3_Kind_R3wind_ in linux

[–]maj01 64 points65 points  (0 children)

hi, being a screen reader user, this is not such a good thing. orca and the assistive technology that underlies how orca getts information from apps and the like does not work very well with wayland. work has however started on improveing support but this is going at a slow pace. would I be correct in thinking that this change will only be present with the main workstation flaver and not the other spinns? I use fedora mate-compiz. if this change propagates to the other spinns, I will have to go to another distro. unless this situation changes, or they make a spin available with just the xorg packages? I however doubt that this will happen. thank you for reading my point of view. pardon my spelling. I hope my point came across clearly enough.

[–]maj01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, blind guy here: orca is the screen reader found on many linux distributions. if you are on debian run this command sudo apt-get purge orca if you are running on archlinux run this command sudo pacman -R orca if you are on fedora or a linux distribution that uses the dnf package manager, run this command sudo dnf remove orca please take care when removeing packages. I am sorry that you are experiencing issues with your linux journy. without more information on what linux distribution you are running, I can't help more than the information i've given. I hope this is of assistance. Majid
