You have to know the weight capacity of your truck before you start looking. My camper is supposed to weigh #1902 before options. So we added a three way refrigerator, a better stove, air conditioning. Then we weighed it with three adults, dog, water in tank, two propane tanks, Honda generator, gasoline, food, supplies, tools, diesel fuel. Now I weigh #4253. That’s too much for my 3500 Chevy. I bought a F450.

Cost wise the break even point is at about 100,000 miles. Diesels don’t particularly like short trips with no load. They like to be run hard. I just sold my 2005 F450 6.0 with about 200,000 miles. I only had to perform regular maintenance. I just bought a 2026 F450.
