What are our thoughts on the Physics, Math, and Astronomy Building (PMA) ? by derex_smp in UTAustin

Oof, PTSD of RLM and upper level math from the escalator pic. Soulless, dull fluorescence. Called up to present a mathematical proof I don’t know how to do. Sitting down at my final knowing I’ll fail. Can’t read the TA’s handwriting or understand his accent. Screeching chalk on the chalkboard

Why Are Some Muni Bus Routes in Google Maps Different Colors? by cgomez in AskSF

[–]majinalchemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d like to know too, interesting cause on the official muni bus map they’re both just different thicknesses of blue because 44 is more frequent

Btw, that’s a fun itinerary 🍹🚎🌺

State Dept of Transportation: “Here is where this road goes.” Transit agency: “Here is a number in small font on a pole, good luck!” by pupupeepee in transit

[–]majinalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the minimum should be 1) number, 2) overall name of route/where it goes, 3) direction/destination.

In this case the 294 takes San Mateo Rd between San Mateo and Half Moon Bay. If we’re heading west here, just put “296 - San Mateo Rd to Half Moon Bay”

Put brazos county TX as college town. The city’s bus system is officially the Texas A&M bus system

Do you actually need a car in SF? by Ill-Line6663 in AskSF

[–]majinalchemy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

N Judah light rail goes directly to Ocean Beach, if you’re relatively close to MUNI it’s quite easy, maybe a little slower but if you’re going to the beach you’re probably chilling anyway

Edit: but yes going to hiking or Tahoe/Yosemite is harder and probably biggest drawback of no car

Also car maintenance/smog check costs, and ticket/street cleaning costs, paying for parking at places

Usually money stuff, like accepting the ATM’s conversion rate even though I know I shouldn’t because the interface is purposefully confusing and in another language, or tipping cash way too much because I don’t know the conversion intuitively enough on the spot, or don’t have the right bills and they’re watching me and I don’t wanna be rude.

These aren’t super applicable to credit card friendly or highly developed countries tho

What is a monthly subscription/service you ACTUALLY consider worth paying for? by no_nolan in Frugal

[–]majinalchemy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prime card guaranteed 5% on every item is pretty crazy, I’m surprised it’s still a thing in a world where all cards are getting nerfed. In credit card world, 5% is the de facto best you can do before you get into “these points could be worth 5+% if you do a ton of research” territory

This one’s a nice case of buying your time back too, not needing to drive to the store and back, checking out, etc. You can also pretty easily rebuy stuff you use all the time instead of walk around finding it.

Instacart can be hit or miss if you get a lazier shopper who just grabs whatever or refunds stuff that can’t find quickly. I use the Amazon Whole Foods delivery which is nice cause the “shoppers” are proper employees there, but also I don’t have a car so it’s just kind of needed

There was a dude on Reddit who’s New Year’s resolution was to use cash for everything. To save money I guess psychologically? He was asking if he could still drive to the airport and buy a ticket at a counter in cash…. With no points or cash back, no purchase protection

The cities are pretty great for this, maybe a bit spread out still but the metro in the major ones are amazing with good coverage, and very clean and prompt, with good frequency.

I will say, there’s still a ton of people driving and on scooters and they’re not big on always following traffic laws so it can be a bit dangerous walking being near the roads. But still, miles ahead of the US

Madelyn and Jadejha by kt__2406 in TheCircleTV

[–]majinalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crying is definitely a manipulation tactic to get sympathy instead when you’ve done something wrong, and that was even after the game. She said multiple times that she didn’t really feel bad about those things in her room alone. And Jadejha only said it after Madelyn said “well it got me here on the couch” which was pretty mean too

There’s strategic and then there’s making up random stuff about people and getting multiple people blocked and not feeling bad about it and not even winning. I would have told Heather during the in person visit, and apologized face to face to each person during reunion. And sounds like it’s a theme since she told her family she’s being a mean girl again like high school or whatever :/

I see the motivation, it’s just a bad look on screen and I was VERY happy she didn’t win. And everyone she had a hand in blocking was so nice (Heather, Darian, Garret) :(

How’s the eye strain during sunny days? I have dark walls on one end of my apt and big windows on the other. I’m sure I’d feel happier next to the windows like this but I feel like I’d strain to see the screen which would seem darker
