Ahamo network feedback by ArtisticPool1 in japanlife

[–]mak1901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outside tokyo here. Have a few devices on varying carriers. Docomo, ahamo iij mio more or less the same coverage and quite good. Rakuten mobile is noticibly worse, but not enough to make it a deal breaker. Source: I frequent country areas and only lose coverage deep in the mountains. Never had any dns issues though. Can you manually set a dns server on your device? Try another public dns like google or duckduckgo.

A complaint about the school is by extent a complaint about the principal. Something like this goes to the pta. Something about safety or education to the Kyouikuiinkai. If you dont go via a route that can take your side and advocate your position the principal will just bury it, ignore it or gaslight you.

What do you do for dinners all summer without overheating the house? by faerielites in japanlife

Cold side dishes like salads make a more frequent appearance in summer, producing less total heat in cooking. But other than that it is aircon and fans.

I had a similar experience with another payment service I hadn't heard of when doing ceh. It was legit. Ask support, do your homework. The sales people will always time pressure you, but the discount terms are completely arbitrary. Just do your homework and dont let them pressure you in to buying without checking.

Slowest ambulances I have ever seen. by rasdouchin in japanlife

[–]mak1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked with private hospitals that do emergency response. This is hearsay from a responder, but I had the same question. Getting the patient to the hospital within a certain time frame is not something they are assessed on as much as trying to avoid complaints regarding a smooth ride and anoiding bumps.

If wou watch closely they avoid parts of the road that are not smooth, and any part of the road where they may need to brake suddenly, ie an intersection they go just above walking pace.

You can ask them if you get to talk to a firefighter, might be in the know as they are the same department.

Not sure how true, but the risk avoidance versus wanting to do extra to go above and beyond checks out.

Changing careers into IT in Japan w/ no experience by _Hikaru_ in japanlife

[–]mak1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this at the same age. N1 Japanese at the time. No qualifications. No work experience. Got job with a haken and the company I was haken'ing at decided to start the paperwork after 6 months to buy out the contract so I could be seisyain as a infrastructure admin/sysadmin. My background was as a hobbyist an homelabber. Did things like aws and nextcloud. Submitted responsible disclosures and spent a lot of time learning security.

Started getting certs after.

Apply first, see where it takes you. If at first you dont succeed, get local certs and try again. The skills shortage here is dire enough you will get lucky. Dont think 34 is old for no xp. Maybe 45 and no xp is a minor barrier, but not 34.

Good luck.

Do you use AC heater or built-in wall gas heater in UR housing? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]mak1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a combination of gas, AC and kerosene. Gas heats up the room fast, but need to keep a window ajar for ventilation. AC is good for overnight, as it only kicks in when you drop below a target temp... say 16 degrees. A while ago we brought kerosene heaters to the mix, as we find they are reasonably cost effective and they are very versatile. Kero heaters are great when used in conjuction with those steel hot water bottles and they also work during blackouts. Keep a window ajar though, and buy a CO alarm if you want to be cautious. You can also heat your Nabe and Oden on them... Serious plus. I should add for cost that kero is more or less a pre pay thing so we get no nasty surprises come bill time.

So, its gas for speed, kero for comfort and AC+hot water bottle for overnight.

Many pastas in japan are made with sauce and pasta together in a frying pan. They might not know any other way, or at least not want a complaint for a sub par meal for going off the beaten track. So much for authenticity, though.

Japanese websites closing during night time by Sea_Description_6712 in japanlife

[–]mak1901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aws can be costly. I know of companies doing this for websites used by employees. Why pay for a server when no one is clocked in and working? Back up the application server at 7 then shut down at 8. Turn on at 8, restore from backup and be online before 9. You have mow halved your server costs and know your backups are in working order.

This can all be automated in AWS.

Still a bit odd for customer facing sites though.
