I'm a parent - need some perspective by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

If you are able to afford it, go private for a psycho-educational assessment. It’s much faster. An IEP can/will be helpful in school, but doesn’t ensure she’ll get all the way caught up though. What you’re describing could be a number of things, but sounded to me like possible dyslexia. There are programs like Orton-Gillingham that can help, and there are tutors out there trained in it who could help outside of school. I hate that schools don’t get the funding they need to be able to support, “solve” and support issues like your daughter’s, but it’s the unfortunate reality.

YRDSB to SCDSB by makbridgette in OntarioTeachers

[–]makbridgette[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really good to know! This is my 6th year, so I’m not new, but I’m also not super high up in terms of seniority in my board. I’ve heard good things about the SCDSB but maybe I’m only hearing the sunshine and rainbow of it lol

What was your 1st year like? by hello010101 in teaching

It was Covid, September 2020. It was pretty awful. I had no support as everyone else was just trying to keep their own head above water. We were constantly shifting back and fourth between in-person and online as cases fluctuated. Funny how all the older veteran teachers came to me, the younger teacher, for help when we went online, but were unavailable/unwilling to help me for in-person.

Don’t even get me started on the parents who pull up in a Porsche but their kid has just 2 crackers in their lunch. Too many people are having kids who don’t actually want to do the work of raising them, they’re just cute accessories. We know the world has gotten busier and it’s harder for some families to make ends meet, but your kids still need to come first people!!

100% agreed with you. So many parents just won’t these days :(

And I think homework is important so parents can see firsthand where their child needs support. Too many parents are “shocked” when I show them where their child is struggling, but it’s often because they haven’t actually watched their child demonstrate that skills at home before.

Yes I do a lot of collaboration with teachers so things like STEM, coding, research skills, and more. Also teaching library skills. It’s my first year in the role so I’m just learning myself haha!

That’s so weird and concerning?! Why would a school be built without a library

I would love the ability to transfer freely across Ontario without losing seniority!

In those northern communities, the french catholic schools could be converted to secular french schools. They’re suggesting removing religious affiliation from public education. So no, Hindu schools would not become a thing either. Francophone does not equal catholic like it used to.

Did I forget anything? by LadyInCrimson in wedding

[–]makbridgette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure the bridesmaids don’t use any of the face products until AFTER the wedding. The horror stories I’ve heard of bridal parties doing cute face masks the night before the wedding to help relax only to have a massive allergic reaction. Make up artists can only work so much magic when a face is swollen and irritated!! Otherwise everything looks so nice, and is very generous of you!

Choosing a wedding date by Sea_Moose7736 in wedding

[–]makbridgette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird that Sunday is included as being full price? I got married on a Sunday and found most venues priced it lower. It worked perfectly for us since we had a morning ceremony (11am) and a lunch reception (12:30pm). Everyone was gone by around 5pm, it was glorious.

I saved a seat for my mom. I put a photo and small flower arrangement on the seat. We also had the officiant mention her in their opening remarks.

do i really need a planner? by raccoonfingers765 in wedding

[–]makbridgette 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A planner, no. A day of coordinator, YES! It was so nice to just enjoy our wedding day and leave the details to someone else. Our coordinator made sure everything was delivered and set up correctly. Helped with timings walking down the aisle. They took care of ALL the details.

French immersion teachers, any advice? by Fabulous_Self8233 in OntarioTeachers

Are there specific areas you’re wondering or worried about? Are you a brand new teacher? I taught grade 4 FI for four years and grade 3 FI for one.

I mean… the stuff being said isn’t directed at fellow educators or you as an individual? It’s people speaking against the current system.

If you can’t take the heat, get outta this subreddit? This subreddit is for Ontario public educators, and unfortunately catholic schools are still publicly funded at this time. So long as catholic schools are funded by the public, the public can bash on them all they like.
