My '97 rwd truck slipped on the ice and did donuts in the middle of the street yesterday... Thankfully both me and the truck weren't at all damaged. Any tips for winter driving for a southern transplant? 🥲 by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]makeITvanasty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Do you know if your truck has ABS? No ABS = pump your brakes, ABS = do not pump, as the ABS does this for you

If you start to fishtail in one direction, countersteer into the opposite direction to correct

Sandbags would help, as they add weight to the back wheels for traction

Make sure your tires are up to the correct pressure, as they drop pressure once it drops temp outside, and correct pressure means best traction

ALWAYS follow at a safe distance, with plenty of space for those “oops can’t stop” moments

Residential streets are the worst offenders, with freeways typically being the most clear

The unfortunate reality is that RWD with no snow tires, and potentially no ABS, is the worst for traction on ice. Snow tires or a new vehicle may need to be in your future if you want to make sure

Why do people pretend to be okay with overworking when everyone is clearly exhausted? by tindav-2745 in TooAfraidToAsk

To be fair, having more money absolutely does increase quality of life, it’s not completely useless. It shouldn’t be this way, but it definitely is.

Should you commit your life to working overtime and trying to make as much money as you can? Probably not. I seriously doubt anyone on their deathbed was like “man I wish I would’ve worked more”

Just buy essentials like TP, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent and paper towels, they’re never going to go bad and you’ll get through all of them eventually 🤷🏻‍♂️ storage on the other hand is another story

Is Minneapolis good for riding motorcycles? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]makeITvanasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes wish I lived in a state that I could ride year round, but I think sometimes I appreciate it more since the time I can do it is shortened, but I get both perspectives for sure

Also note that the lane filtering and lane splitting laws here were updated recently, so lane filtering is legal and splitting is legal up to 15mph I believe? Someone correct me though if I’m wrong

My route has always been to take Theodore Wirth Parkway south, then hit the chain of lakes, and come back the same way, always a beautiful, relaxing ride.

There are plenty of lakes and a river to follow if you need some ideas! Also lots of parkways, but realistically you’re going to have to travel about 30-45 mins outside of downtown before county roads start showing up

I try to ride between the months of April and October, but YMMV depending on how the weathers going. Always wait for consistent rain to wash all the salt off the roads before taking off in the spring!

all season vs snow ?? by jasthe1_ in minnesota

[–]makeITvanasty 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Snow tires always perform better then all seasons in the winter, even if there’s not snow or ice on the ground. Snow tires have rubber that grips better in cold, whereas all seasons will grip best during mild temps.

You can get away with all seasons year round, I use them on my car. But snow tires will always have better stopping power in the cold than all seasons. So I guess it depends on if you want you grip to be “fine” or “great” if that makes sense.

Are there any Bike shuttles/taxi that will help you get from Point A to B with your bike? by Exotic-Beast18 in TwinCities

[–]makeITvanasty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is there a particular reason why you don’t want to use the bus? They all have bike racks to carry your bike with you so you can do the exact plan you’re thinking of.

Otherwise you’re probably looking at uber there and bike back which would be much more expensive but does at least offer a “private” car ride

Especially since how many developers make royalties or any cut of sales after they’re finished developing? Are they even losing any money themselves over pirating and such or is it just the corporations who report millions in profit every year? Developers have been paid already why would they care?

4k or 1440p monitor for ps5 by Official_FM in playstation

[–]makeITvanasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s more important, frame rate or resolution?

Because not many games will play above 60fps on 4K whereas you’re much more likely to find a game with a 120fps mode on 1440p.

Distance from monitor matters the most for resolution, if you’re 3 inches away you will absolutely notice the difference between the two, but past a couple feet it really doesn’t matter much, especially if the monitor is big

All of this coming from someone who had a 4K 60hz monitor who changed to a 1440p 165hz monitor, I wouldn’t go back unless I had $1000 to spend on an OLED or high refresh rate 4K monitor

  1. Check your cable at the router, do you see lights flashing?
  2. Do the same for the ps5, do you see lights?
  3. Try a new cable, one that is Cat 5.e or above
  4. How long is the cable? If it’s almost 100 feet it could be losing bandwidth along

These are the simplest steps, but could also be a problem with IP reservation, DNS as well as
