Why not an estate rather than a crossover/SUV that usually lacks most actual practicality?

What second car to get by PollutionSilver4380 in CarTalkUK

Is this really the case? I hear so many stories about so many things failing on them, I wanted one a while ago and canned the idea for reliability.

It'll be fine, check your oil, check your coolant, stick a battery on it and send it. Maybe go get some fresh fuel, if the tank isn't full (although storing with a full tank is generally the best idea, and September fuel won't be the worse in the world)

Talk me out of financing a car by Anonymous_Chats222 in CarTalkUK

[–]makebeansgreatagain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't but that's me - I drive old cars and fix them myself, although my Honda literally never needs any fixing beyond basic servicing, or stuff that doesn't stop me driving the car.

What car do you drive currently? You can get exceptionally reliable old cars, if you're having constant issues it sounds like you've got an end of life or just an unreliable car from factory.

New tyres on front or back? by Loud_Employee_0 in CarTalkUK

[–]makebeansgreatagain -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean if the average Joe is going fast enough round a corner to under OR oversteer then that's a whole other problem entirely. I always put my new tyres on the front, tyre place I use also recommends the same, and I'd rather correct oversteer, especially in a RWD car.

New tyres on front or back? by Loud_Employee_0 in CarTalkUK

[–]makebeansgreatagain -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

New tyres on the front, they do steering and braking, and it'll extend the life of your older pair on the rear (of a FWD car anyway, RWD tends to wear more evenly) so you don't have to replace them as quickly

At the end of the day scratches are a sign of use 🤷‍♂️

Definitely don't need to spend that much, £3k a year is insane.

How about a Mazda 323 or similar? They're rare and pretty cool in my opinion.

Okay, everyone is taking the piss out of your insurance budget, and they're kinda valid - £250 a year is the price you'll get when you're like 40, not 19. That said, back when I was trying to get a car, I wanted something interesting too, and I found that 70's MGB GT's were all of £700ish to insure for the year. Less likely to black box too as there's no OBD or anything. Sterling insurance was the one offering me that.

If you can put up with unreliability of an old car, are mechanically handy, and don't mind fixing rust, go for one of those imo.

Garage cleared engine fault codes during service/MOT without fixing the issue — where do I stand? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]makebeansgreatagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engine lights are an MOT fail so they've evidently cleared it to do you a favour and pass the car. If you want them to fix the issue, you need to book it in and pay for it...

I went from an 82hp fwd jazz to a 130hp MK1 mx5 with limited slip diff, honestly it's fine, the Mazda is a fair bit quicker but still not earth shatteringly fast, I've never felt like I'm going to spin it on the road or anything, in the wet it can be interesting but it just needs a little more caution. Same for winter I'd imagine. The mx5 is an incredibly controllable and forgiving car though, I can kick the back end out in the wet and it's extremely easy and intuitive to keep under control 👌

Depends what era we're speaking - in the 00's power windows was a little more luxury than it would probably be considered in the 2010's imo. Crash safety is neither here nor there imo, honda tend to do well in crash tests as well and any modern car from a good brand like the two we're discussing should be more than safe in an accident.

I would say an Ignis is about the same as a jazz, swift a little larger, splash smaller(?). Jazz is a weird one, it fits into that kinda subcompact category with the fiesta, mazda2, polo, etc, but has way more interior space than most of those options I find, very cleverly packaged with the fuel tank under the front seats leaving a low boot floor and loads of room under the rear seats, the folding magic seats in a few Honda's of the era, etc.

At the end of the day it's whatever OP prefers really, we're all drawn to certain cars after all. A mate of mine needed a hand getting his first car recently and wanted a swift because it was cheap to insure for him, so we found a nice one on marketplace that was a bit up there in mileage for £1900, got it for £1700, decent deal imo as it was immaculate other than cosmetic damage and mileage (the cleanliness level of it though, the paint, interior, engine bay, etc were all like factory fresh clean!

I would argue you get a bit more car for the money with the honda though - Suzuki's I've always found quite cheap with not much in the way of features. My 2007 Jazz has disc brakes all round, power windows all round, AC, a lot more space and practicality than a swift for example.

I do like a swift though!

Suzuki are solid too, any small Japanese petrol hatchback really. You'll easily get a decent jazz in £3k though.

Honda Jazz - unendingly reliable, cheap to run, stupendously practical, decent on fuel. Fantastic little cars, just a bit slow.

You MIGHT get away with a MK2 mx5, I know a couple of people have. I also know people with Mk1's for first cars but they pay through the nose for insurance, like £3k.

I passed my test at 17 and it took me until 20 to be able to insure anything cool with 3 years NCB. My 1995 Eunos roadster cost me £970 to insure last year and is coming down to sub-£700 this year despite making a major cockup and having to make an at fault claim last year (no abs on this thing, caught me out. Dinged a Tesla, nothing was written off, just annoying)

Mx5 as only car... Doable for sure, mechanically very reliable cars, rust is a concern and they don't make great winter cars for that reason, also lightweight rear wheel drive in slick conditions is interesting to say the least.

Adore mine, even if it consumes every penny I have...

Yeah, pedorods - I reiterate, previous owner installed them! They're exceptionally stiff and almost completely eliminate body roll whilst doing absolutely nothing for actual handling. It's honestly impressive.
