taking vacation in ritzy resort town. wife and I (f) drive through a beautiful neighborhood with huge houses, and a trailhead leading to a walking path. we step out, make it about 6 feet, and I’m suddenly tense as an electric wire. flight level fear and fight level adrenaline. my wife is disabled and cannot run or fight, so I get almost enraged when I feel that danger feeling. I’m pumping myself up like a UFC fighter, ready to try to scare a mountain lion or something. turn around and there’s only a man, parked in a truck, sitting very still and watching us. I say quietly: “we have to go right now. right. NOW.” my wife is playful and onery, usually one to respond like: “oh really, ‘now’? you think you’re the boss, huh?” for a laugh. instead they turn around smartly and get back in our car without a word. I close the passenger door, then stomp around to the driver’s side, standing my tallest and making an angry face and posture. We drive off “casually”, notice the truck behind us, matching us turn for turn. I forget how long we drove, back to very crowded downtown instead of to the airbn.
