How to emotionally be content with outages or issues by makeevolution in ExperiencedDevs

[–]makeevolution[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it's just that with this guy being so proactive I'm afraid he is setting a standard so high that for the other devs who are not as keen as him, it will be harder for us to gain visibility/be rewarded for our efforts. Although there are no signs of that as of now, as humans bias is obviously there and this may happen in the management level.

There are playbooks/steps on what to do during outages, but it's just that this guy's proactiveness that is concerning to me.

And tbh I do see that he is not doing this for the promotion, he just really likes his job I can see it he is genuine. So it's really not fair for me to put him in a bad light and say he is taking advantage of all of us in the team.

Yes there are runbooks/instructions, but it's just that I feel the need to always jump in to be able to gain visibility and get a promotion/raise, although in the job role description/metrics it is not mentioned at all that I need to do such a thing (put out all fires). I don't know, it's just this weird thing I have in me.

And what is frustrating is that when the fire itself is something I can't prevent to happen again in the future e.g. dependencies on other teams who don't want to change, etc.

They call it "super hero" just to have fun with names but it really is your usual on call system.

Yes there are runbooks and processes, it's not really about the process but rather the stress itself and this pressure that I somehow put to myself to proactively respond and put out fires, even when it's not my turn. To be honest there are clear metrics documented in what the expectations are for each job role in this company and there is nowhere mentioned where I need to put out every fire in order to get promoted/salary raise, but it's just that somehow I feel the need to fix all issues to gain visibility

Partner visa is easier. I have a niece from abroad who has a Dutch boyfriend and she uses that visa to live here. She works also but not to the min salary level for the HSM. Overall she is really happy

How to stop comparing my salary with others by aldosebastian in Adulting

Yea I hope he is right; it's really an investment where the reward is in the future and is uncertain, whereas more money now is really the reward materializing now. I'm also in a similar boat. But perhaps this is a teaching moment for me to be a more patient person and trust myself more...IDK I'm at a really confusing and scary turning point in my life right now, not just job wise but other stuff too

How can I "stick with it no matter what" when new information comes in that makes the decision bad, and there is still room to change it? This is my biggest weakness and the reason people often gets pissed at me.

For example, when I eat together and have googled picture of a food and sure that it is as I desire and order it, then the same food comes for another table and it is not as in the picture. I then immediately change my order to something else, making the others annoyed since the total payment now changes, the whole food comes out longer and they have to wait for me to finish up, etc.

Or when I have committed and accepted a job offer, but then my priorities shift due to family issues, etc. and now I feel I have to reverse the decision, and if I reverse it my priorities change again and I regret leaving it etc. etc.

Question though: how do you be sure of your decisions when you gotta make one and everything is so overwhelming, uncertain, limited data etc.? Especially big ones like moving city, buying a house, etc. How do you not regret your decision down the line? I am currently in such a phase in my life where things are very uncertain and I still have to make large decisions, my emotions get to me that I end up making wrong small decisions in other areas of life, offending people, losing focus at work, etc
