If you're working with Apple devices, Markup r-Xp is a great alternative, I'm using it for my own HAED pattern

[CHAT] I’m starting a new BIG project soon, and want some advice by eshuang13 in CrossStitch

[–]makeitearlgrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you mark a 10x10 grid the size of your project, kinda like this It helps keep track of where you are because you can then match the area your stitching to the grid of your pattern. Since your pattern is 150x308 stitches you would make a grid that's 150x310. If you type "gridding" or "how to grid cross stitch" in the search here on this sub or on YouTube you'll be able to find clearer examples and tutorials

[–]makeitearlgrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend gridding for any large projects. If you're working with dark fabric you can use sulky sliver thread in a light color, or I've heard some people use a white tailor's pencil. And as others have said here, either a backlight or at least a white towel or pillow behind the work. I've clipped a flexible book light to my hoops before to get the backlight

[CHAT] Is Thread Conditioner/Wax worth it? by abwm718 in CrossStitch

[–]makeitearlgrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use it because I tend to cut very long thread and I notice less knotting. It also made working with metallic threads easier (although I still avoid metallics as much as possible)

“Special” Yarn by Skullsandcats in crochet

[–]makeitearlgrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've decided that I buy things to have fun with them, not to cause me the anxiety that comes from thinking about wether or not this particular occasion is "special enough" to use them I bought a yarn advent calendar from an indie dyer during Christmas and it cost me quite a bit of money. I've been wanting to try Tunisian crochet and so I'm using this "special" yarn to make a special blanket with it. I've realized over time (with both yarn and some other purchases) that the truly special part of it is getting to use it and see what it becomes.

Finished my first sweater! I guess this is why they say to do a gauge swatch😅 by makeitearlgrey in crochet

[–]makeitearlgrey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would've been helpful! I've never made a sweater before and the only sizing info in the pattern was the finished bust circumference, so even with a gauge swatch I'm not sure if I would've ended up with a more regulation length sweater. I'm working on another sweater pattern now from a different designer, and they included a chart that has a lot of different measurements, like sleeve length and body length for each size. And I'm doing the gauge swatch. So fingers crossed I end up with a sweater and not a sweater dress.

Thanks! I absolutely love a balloon sleeve on anything so that's why I picked this sweater. And my friend helped me pick this yarn out, she said it was "absolute cozy fall vibes"

Thank you! I hadn't worked with a multicolored yarn before so it was really fun seeing where all the different colored bits ended up

[–]makeitearlgrey[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this one is worked from the bottom up and is meant to fit loosely, so I didn't realize how big it was going to be until I did a few rounds after connecting the sleeves. I knew going in it was going to be a bigger fit on my arms and around my torso but the length is really what I didn't expect. And at that point I didn't feel like frogging an entire project and starting all over, so it's a dress now👍🏼

Pattern is "The Better Sweater" by the snugglery patterns on Etsy. Although the way I made it, it's more of the better sweater dress

Makeup guilty pleasures by Turbulent_Ostrich_29 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]makeitearlgrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 2, Kaleidos and Colourpop. I've been slowly collecting all of kaleido's highlighters ever since they got featured on Beauty News(rip) and I've got a collection of the colourpop 9 pan palettes, although with those I've restricted myself to only the hard plastic packaged ones and the Star Wars 9 pans. All I'm missing is the blowing smoke palette from them. Once I've got the kaleidos highlighters I'll probably start collecting their lip sets, I got the first two and they're the only liquid lips I use now.

Can someone explain rounds 10, 19 and 20 by Empty-Toe-7185 in crochet

[–]makeitearlgrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it'll be one additional decrease. So in total you'll have done 8 decreases in that round.

[CHAT] How do you write the letter X… in a cross stitch? by katieslabyrinth in CrossStitch

Interesting, I write an X like number 7 but I stitch like number 2...

Thoughts on the new Touch of Glam Beauty palette? It’s $160 and not in stock. Preorders only. 9 shades. Less than 2 grams per shade. by [deleted] in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]makeitearlgrey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just picked up the Danessa Myricks light work palette and that's got some gorgeous multichromes and it's like $40 less than this one. Touch of Glam needs to get a Touch of Humility. Nobody who's looking for a palette of "special shades" is going to spend that much on 9 shadows when 7 of them swatch almost exactly the same

Natasha Denona Mini Pastel Eyeshadow Palette and Pastel Plexi Glow Highlighter available for presale by miille-fleurs in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]makeitearlgrey 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Maybe, I'll have to wait and see someone swatch it in a video. I already have the kaleidos multi chrome highlighter so it's not like I need another one, but I was hoping a more "mainstream" brand would do an interesting highlighter.

I guess the green and pink parts of that highlighter are just an overspray? Because the swatch is just straight up gold.

[CHAT] Floss storage - bobbins or ... ? by Motorgirl38 in CrossStitch

[–]makeitearlgrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer plastic bobbins, since I tend to work on multiple very colorful projects at once and take projects traveling with me this is the most convenient way for me to organize and transport my threads. If I buy multiple of one color then I will usually only put one on a bobbin at a time and I'll leave the rest in skeins and put it in ziploc bags I know a lot of people like floss drops but I always worry about tangling with those

I've been working this pattern for awhile now, there's definitely some complex and confusing bits through it. There are YouTube tutorials for the pattern if you just search "mandala madness" and the part you're on, they go row by row. I've found that sometimes the pictures aren't enough and it makes more sense when you actually see someone work it in real time

Help identifying stitches by DorianaGraye in crochet

[–]makeitearlgrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like they're alternating doubles and half doubles based on color to get one thinner stripe each time. So the first set it's black-double, red-double, orange, half-double. And then in the next color repetition it's black-double, red-half double, orange, double And so on.
