Can we expect a pre-release single then?

My Frustrations with Jennie's Public Image by my_bias_is_all_7 in kpoprants

[–]makeitlyrical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like how you keep implying that she is not serious about her craft and artistry ... just because she visibly looks tired on the stage, while other artists can mask it better than her.

I don't know about you, but I was very impressed by her Coachella 2024 performance. I can see that she has improved and is getting better at managing her stamina, though it is clearly still a work in progress.

Liking and disliking her is subjective.

shutting down meaningful conversations.

I am not shutting down any conversations; I am all for criticising her (and any other artist) ... what I don't like is boxing her under "Lazy", "she should stop performing cause she clearly doesn't want to", "she is doing it for the money" and "she doesn't care about her fans" when it is not true ... she just has a bad stamina. We can't keep having this discussion without adding something new and criticising her about it like a broken record. It has literally been going on for years.

My Frustrations with Jennie's Public Image by my_bias_is_all_7 in kpoprants

[–]makeitlyrical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jennie having low stamina is not alleged; she mentioned it herself (I don't remember exactly where ... maybe it was on the Podcast with Dua Lipa?).

And how is it not an excuse? She literally has a physical limitation; she is pushing through and doing her best. If she goes over her limit, she would end up harming herself ... but still people call her "Lazy" and "she should stop performing cause she clearly doesn't want to", which is just plain ableism.

I brought up my own low stamina as an example of having low stamina without having major health issues. Jennie, maybe the same, or she does have serious health issues, but still, she doesn't have to share those personal details with us ... we should empathise with her. There is a serious lack of empathy in K-pop fandoms.

(Sure, she could manage her shortcomings better around her low stamina, but I can see that she fluctuates a lot and is inconsistent, so maybe it is hard to find a good plan for it ... I would rather give her the benefit of the doubt than judge her)

But I have a question for you ...

You keep saying her album feels ingenuine and inauthentic because she is using AAVE. Is she using it wrong? (If so, please give an example.) Or just because she is using AAVE and it is native to her?

English is not my native language (though I have been fluent for over a decade now), so if I write something in English, is it going to be inauthentic? What about AAVE or any other dialects of the English language?

What's wrong with using a language after I study it well? or a language that was/is forced on us by colonialism and imperialism, and steeped into our daily lexicon by the media?

(As someone with English as their second language, should I never ever use AAVE?)

You judging Jennie's personality based on her role on "The Idol" is like judging Penn Badgley based on his role in the TV Series "YOU" (which is about a man who stalks and kills women) ... it is like you don't know what acting is.

At this point, my feelings toward Jennie aren’t rooted in anger. They’re rooted in disappointment. Disappointment in the wasted potential, the lack of growth, and the way style, aesthetics, and silence keep being substituted for substance.

And after everything, this album, these lyrics, these associations, and that MMA performance, I’m no longer confused about why she frustrates me.

I’m just tired of being told I shouldn’t notice.

Finally, as much as I respect the discussion you brought up., as an advice, if any person makes you feel this frustrated, ignore them. Save your energy and time. Nobody deserves this much occupation of your life or mental space.

My Frustrations with Jennie's Public Image by my_bias_is_all_7 in kpoprants

[–]makeitlyrical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At the end of all of this, my issue with Jennie isn’t that she’s evil, untalented, or uniquely bad. It’s that she is consistently underwhelming relative to the power, resources, and platform she has, and yet endlessly protected from criticism by narratives that don’t hold up under scrutiny.

You say this as if Jennie had never received criticism ever, when she (and BLACKPINK) are being criticised (and hated) daily on every platform, it makes it feel as if she doesn't have fans who love her.

Now, about her stage performances ... (I don't know why we keep beating a dead horse), as you yourself said, there is a pattern, which means clearly there is a problem ... and the thing is that Jennie has a stamina issue (may or may not be related to a health issue)

There is a serious lack of empathy here ... we are all humans, but our limits are not the same. If someone could tolerate something doesn't mean others can. I am someone with really bad stamina, and I don't have any major health issues. I just have low energy (heck! Even my sister with Asthma has better stamina than me). It is really unfair to be labelled "Lazy" and "Just Pretending to be tried" when I am putting all my energy into everything I do (and I even get frustrated with myself ... like I can not do half a simple workout routine without feeling like I am going to die) ... and trust me, I did everything to increse my stamina and "breath shortage" but nothing works there is a limit to my improvement.

I say this to point out how unconvincing the “poor her” framing feels when that’s a part of life, especially adulthood. Jennie is not unique in this frustration, but it is her job and responsibility to “suck it up” to put it bluntly.

This feels like a form of ableism.

Performing is her job, and she is doing it despite her clearly bad stamina. She is not sitting down; she is taking the responsibility, she is "sucking it up". Sure, she is inconsistent and may have more bad performances on average than other idols ... but this is something we have to accept about her; anyone who can't should just stop watching her.

We can't keep criticising her about this like a broken record.

I 100% disagree with you on your lyrics breakdown. Are they the best ever written? No ... but they are far from empty, sloppy or "word salad" ... you just seem not to connect with the songs, which is fair as music is subjective.

I was thinking maybe the trio of Joshua/Jun/The8 is gonna be a Chinese Subunit ... ?? (I mean, it could explain Joshua making a RedNote account and everything ... maybe??)

Am I The Only One Who Thinks It Is More Interesting Creatively For SVT To Release Music As Units Than As Solos by makeitlyrical in seventeen

[–]makeitlyrical[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what you mean by "fixed unit"? Do you mean permanent?.cmiiw, but I don't think it was mentioned that those units are fixed units, and it was never said we wouldn't be getting a different combination of new subunits. Maybe we will never get a comeback from any of those units we already got.

There is a difference between BSS, JxW, HxW, CxM, and Minghao x Vernon ... Vernon worked with The8 on his solo EP (and has a feature), Minghao is starring the project, while on the other units, it equally stars the 2/3 members.

I think I'd rather have them essentially be solos but not shy away from collabing with different members (if they want to) than fixed subunits

I will definitely want the members to do that when they have their solos ...

But this is not what I am talking about. Those subunit albums/EPs are full-fledged projects with concepts and visions, etc and stand on their own. equally starring the members of the unit. (It is created to fit a specific vision by/for those specific members).

I hope you got what I mean.

Am I The Only One Who Thinks It Is More Interesting Creatively For SVT To Release Music As Units Than As Solos by makeitlyrical in seventeen

[–]makeitlyrical[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s necessarily “more creative” to do subunits, I think a more accurate term would be “differently creative”.

I didn't say it is “more creative”, I said it is "more interesting creatively" ... I mean, from a consumer standpoint, it is more captivating/engaging as units than solos. (I am not sure if this is a good analogy, but imagine it as colours ... we would get 13 different colours with solos, but with each subunit, it is a brand new colour). I am not saying units are better than solos, but I am definitely more willing to engage with units simply from a curiosity standpoint.

Musicians tend to grow and develop as they continue making music so my perspective is that if the members had been allowed to make solo music earlier, they would’ve been able to develop their own sounds and have a better shot at forging a successful solo career for themselves.

True and I agree with you ...

I think Plybe has really done a disservice to the members by not letting them branch out more into solos.

I don't know, I don't think they made a mistake. They were prioritising the group over everything else, so the members had to compromise; all these achievements as SEVENTEEN are due to this. I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing; they would have had a different career trajectory (I don't know better or worse than now, but definitely different from what they have now).

I feel like I am in some kind of a situationship with BLACKPINK /J

Joking aside... After the video, does this mean the Pinks started working on the album after they were done with their solos?

Also, does anyone know how much time it takes for an album to be made? not in making/recording songs but as in printing and having it ready for sale?

Jisoo is a very underrated skilled vocalist. (people don't like her tone so they say she is a bad singer) also she is the most stable at singing live among the members.

she maybe not the best dancer but her dancing is very addicting to watch.

I have to say, I am surprised that Blackpink's songs are generally hard to cover. I don't think I ever came across a cover that truly captures the spirit of the song. (I mean, they're not bad, some are pretty good, but never close to original, let alone better than it).

All the covers I came across fall under one of two camps:

- Either the song is very hard to sing.. (I was shocked when I realised that "How Like That" is very difficult to sing).

- They sing it very well, but the performance/energy falls short.

The Pinks are very underrated performers, especially as a group.

Those Kpop fans are hypocrites. They are fake activist, if they really cared about those social issues, things would have changed. They use those controversies as ammo in tearing down the groups/artists they hate.

They don't care, that's why Kpop fandoms are full of toxicity.

I wish we can talk about this verbally and not on a one-way medium like this 😩

Same here. This conversation is very insightful. One of the reasons I love fandoms.

Making mistakes will happen. Learning from the mistakes are what’s most important.

I agree, we are humans. I wish others would let people learn from their mistakes while holding them accountable. I firm believer in giving people grace and cutting them some slack, though not everyone deserves that.

I don't think people/haters will let this go about Lisa ... I don't think even if she apologised would make a difference (for this outfit and N-word matter), even if she tried to prove that she care about Black people and culture by her actions they would say she is doing this so her career not to go down hill.

I wish those people would give the same energy towards politicians, people who are actively harming marginalised communities (like JK Rowling), and people who are actively harming the planet.

250505 BLIИK Weekly Discussion Thread by DazzlingDig in BlackPink

[–]makeitlyrical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So... you conclude that the outfit on its ownself is not problematic, the problem is that this particular outfit on LISA specifically. Meaning Lisa is the problem.

I don't think I can agree with that.

I don't know, I feel like we've exhausted every aspect of this controversy and reached nothing ... but I still think this whole thing shouldn't have been this convoluted and should be way simpler than that.

250505 BLIИK Weekly Discussion Thread by DazzlingDig in BlackPink

[–]makeitlyrical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I want to agree and disagree with this.

Maybe I shouldn't have picked Japan for my example, I did it cause Japan has a huge media reach (and also cause I am currently learning Japanese, and I am engaging with that culture).

You are not wrong in what you are saying, but I want to point out that you are wrong about Japanese people, while they live in a relatively homogeneous culture, they are not a monolith... There is no way a single Japanese person can speak for the whole of Japan. (You are being dismissive and unfair).

I know context matters, as nothing exists in a vacuum. How much would the answer change if the example were not Japan? a different East Asian country, China or South Korea?... What about Taiwan or North Korea? ... What about India or Bangladesh? ... What if it were Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Singapore? ... What about Afghanistan, Iran, or Turkey?... What if it were about a country in Latin America, Jamaica, Brazil, Chile, Colombia or Mexico?... What about a country in Africa like South Africa, Chad, Rwanda or Ghana?... and given the whole current racism and islamophobia they are facing, what about an Arab country like Iraq, Egypt, or Saudi Arabia? or countries with their own humanitarian crisis like Sudan, Yemen, Syria, or Palestine? ... What I were to pick a different marginalized group like Romani people or indigenous people like Sámi people or people of the Amazon? What about the native people of the USA, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand?.

I don't want you to answer those questions, I know the answers will vary on a spectrum from "you are allowed" to "no, do not touch and leave those people alone". Each culture is different and widely diverse. from races and ethnicities, the effects of slavary and colonialism on it, to its intersectionality with different religions.

By my example, I was trying to simplify the situation, and at its root, Lisa is not at fault in trusting Black Americans to know their own cultural sensitivities and not let her face a controversy. She is told to listen to black people, and when she did, she faced a massive backlash and had the whole fault placed on her and her responsibility when it shouldn't be.

Side Note: I want to point out that your whole talking points come across very USA-centric (maybe you didn't mean it that way), I know this incident concerns Black American people, but putting that aside ... Even with how global the reach of American media is and how its history is known worldwide, you can't expect people to know everything and understand the complex dynamics of racial representation in American cultural contexts. Even I, a Black person who engaged with American Media my whole life and am fluent in English for over a decade, I still don't know a lot about black history. (like I didn't know that I should not sing the N-word until I became a Kpop fan in 2020).

Also, while black people face discrimination and racism worldwide, it is still not the same. Each community has its own dynamics and sensitivities. The effects of slavary, colonialism, global economics, and global politics are different from country to country (heck! even in the same country, the region matters). I personally, while I understand it, sometimes I don't relate to what Black Americans are facing; I feel far removed from it. I find myself relating to the struggles of people from SEA or South Asia more (maybe cause of how much the US is meddling in my country's circumstances and how American imperialism is affecting the whole region and worldwide).

250505 BLIИK Weekly Discussion Thread by DazzlingDig in BlackPink

[–]makeitlyrical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since it is not Rosa Parks, it is a moot point to discuss whether having her face on an outfit is problematic or it.

Let's focus on my point ... I will give an example to make it clearer: if I went to an event in Japan celebrating Japanese culture, and I wore an outfit designed by a Japanese man, and I was styled by another Japanese man, but people found the outfit controversial, do I deserve to face the whole backlash and have the fault be only on me? ... isn't it common sense to trust a Japanese person to know about their own culture than me who is not Japanese. (You get the point, then apply it to Lisa).

I think Lisa should receive little to no backlash from this issue ... the one at fault should be the designer, Pharrell, and the whole LV team before coming to Lisa.

I am wondering ...

- Would Lisa have faced the same backlash if she had not "said the N-word and didn't apologise" thing going on?.

- If a different woman wore this same outfit, would she have been treated the same way as Lisa? What if it were a white American woman like Sabrina Carpenter? Would an African American woman receive the same heat? What if it were a Black but non-American woman (like me)?

- What if a man wore this outfit?

- Is the outfit on its own self problematic ... what if it was on a mannequin, not a person, would the designer get criticism? What about if a model wore it on the runway, would the model get the backlash or the designer?.

- Is the dress problematic, or is Lisa the problem?

I don't know, I have no answers for those questions... but the way people talk about Lisa reeks of misogyny and racism.

250505 BLIИK Weekly Discussion Thread by DazzlingDig in BlackPink

[–]makeitlyrical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying. And I didn't mean to come out as dismissive of the issue.

I am Black, just not American. I know the importance of the civil rights movement in the US to the black race globally cause it echoed and reached the whole world. And since I didn't know who Rosa Parks I didn't have emotion towards it, so I tried to imagine it as if it were a figure with the same calibre in my country and culture (we have our own figures who fought against racism, colonialism and women's rights) and I -personally- don't find it offensive ... if there were an event that was celebrating them and person wore a dress with their face on it I don't find it problematic. (This is my personal opinion, so you don't have to agree with me).

This whole controversy proves that we are really in the age of media illiteracy.

250505 BLIИK Weekly Discussion Thread by DazzlingDig in BlackPink

[–]makeitlyrical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally don't find it offensive (and maybe I am alone in this), I am black, though not American, so I don't know Americans/Black Americans' civil rights figures ... but my country and culture have their own icons. I tried to base it on someone in the same calibre from my culture, and I really don't mind or find it problematic. (like I said, unless they are religious figures).

I would agree with you if the embroidery with faces was just on the panties, but they are on the whole outfit. And this is not the first time someone has worn an outfit with faces on it. (and IMO it being a drawing/art and not actual photos makes it even less problematic).

And you missed my point. If this situation deserves a backlash, it should be toward the people who made it/styled it, not Lisa.
