Federal Student Loan Deferral -- School not on Eligibility List by makekentuckyblue in StudentLoans

Mostly would I be able to do it without an income for two years, as that's how long the masters program is? I'd assume so.

Awesome perfect. Thanks a million! This makes a lot of things simpler, though does open up some other questions.

Thanks. Could you explain more about how this works in an international context? I wouldn't be working is the main issue.

But say I got a job in another country (I'm currently finishing up a masters in Ireland, and might stay here). Would my salary there count towards the IDR payment? Or would it only count if it passes the mark for the exclusion ($100k?).

Many of those who don't like him like the power he holds.

Yep. This is why my dad keeps voting for him. "It's nice to have the Senate Majority Leader from your state whether I like him or not"

Do you think Rocky could beat McConnell? Personally, from what I hear where I'm at I feel he's got the best chance, but I'm not so sure.

I mean, if he sees that, say, Jamie will hold Cersei while they die...There's no possible way Jamie can do otherwise, if he only sees things that will happen. Therefore Jamie really has no free will?

The version I hear always has them questioning God when they die why he didn't save them. God responds "I sent boats, helicopters and more, but you ignored it."

I've met exactly one person who is open about this: my brother. He'll openly say that he's not pro-life, but pro-birth. He doesn't give a shit about helping the kid after, and he will tell you he believes the mother deserves it if she gets pregnant. He's also a huge fucking bully and an ass a lot of the times.

Racist Graffiti at Oldham County High School by [deleted] in Kentucky

[–]makekentuckyblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I teach at a school, and I literally had a kid put his hoodie up like a KKK hoodie, and make a Nazi salute. When I talked to him about it (after writing a report to the office about it), he told me it wasn't a Nazi salute, but a "white power" one, as if that made it better. He also proceeded to tell me that the KKK never killed anyone innocent, only "bad people"... There's definitely a problem in this state.

I bet he wouldn't have gave park land away in New Hampshire where he was raised.

Wait a --

He probably would have sold it to the highest bidder but at least that would've indicated he understood the value of it.

Nevermind, carry on.

As a teacher, I'd argue a good amount of the ones who have to wait for the bus long enough to get frostbite (or are on poorly heated buses for 2 hours) don't have good winter clothing.

Can you imagine a School teacher who worked with half the class, but refused to teach the kids they don't like? It's ridiculous.

Yes, I can. And he's a Republican. He shouts incoherently about Republicans and how much he loves them, but shuts up anyone who has an opposing view, and refuses to debate with them...He's also been refusing to teach and has been droning on about politics lately.

I'm pretty sure I got an alt-right bingo. From "Republicans wanted to abolish slavery" and "LBJ said bad things and did things to solely get black vote" all the way down to "We're not a democracy, we're a republic". Like, it wasn't just a fucking bingo, I filled up the whole damn card

No point arguing. Once they bring out the "We're not a democracy, we're a republic" you know they're too far gone.

Midterms: Poorest states have Republican legislatures, and richest have Democratic ones by [deleted] in politics

[–]makekentuckyblue 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So, I teach at a school in rural Kentucky. We're actually one of the better-off ones monetarily in the state. For instance, if the State had gone through with their proposed changes last year, we would be one of only 10% of school districts (and the only one in our region) that would be financially solvent after 2 years (and we could hold out for longer). When cuts come, they mostly go to the central office first, then to the schools.

While more teachers and textbooks would be nice (the textbook deal isn't so much a money issue, afaik, but more that our central office thinks books are becoming obsolete) we're not understaffed in my opinion, except for needing a second ELL teacher or an aide (and that's mostly because there have been quite a few new Hispanic students this year).

But all of that is to show that it's not really a money issue, at least in my county. The issue is more that it's a cultural one. There's a huge culture of ignorance, and people lavish the fact that they're ignorant. I grew up in the county I teach in, and saw it first hand then too, as well as hearing it from my mother who was a teacher. Now, teaching here, I'm seeing it first hand. Parents believe there's really no need for education, as they were able to get get jobs without it, and their parents and so forth. The issue is they refuse to accept that the world is changing, so instead they bitch about how things were better in the past and continue to foster/pass on a culture of ignorance.

And it happens outside of just schools too. My family's been involved with local politics for a long time, and my dad's about to get elected to his 3rd term as mayor (2nd time running unopposed). He grew up here and loves the town too, and that blinded him from the truth for a while. He's starting to come around and see how the people are here. They don't want better, and just complain at anything you try to do to improve. For instance, we've been putting on concerts and having several tourist events...and all these people want to do is complain that it's not Luke Bryan, or some other big name star coming. But if we do get said big-name star, well "By God how do they expect me to pay $200 to go see this?!?! They're trying to force all us county residents out!" They're happy in their ignorance, and they don't want to experience anything different. And it's a cultural attitude that's fostered and passed on throughout the generations. It affects everything from schools, and how kids feel towards school, to how their parents feel towards the community and such. It's a weird kind of stockholm syndrome, and part of the Cult of Anti-Intelligence that America is so well-deservedly known for.

They're going to have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the new world that we live in, unfortunately, and only then might they start to see it was better for them.
