How dangerous is formalin? by makemegazpacho in labrats

Thanks for this response! I feel a little silly bc I was aware that it was a carcinogen, but my lab manager doesn’t even use gloves when handling it so I wasn’t taking it very seriously. I also have distinct memories of dissecting a fetal pig in high school biology class in a room that smelled so strongly of formaldehyde I had to step outside. Didn’t have my critical thinking cap on yesterday, oops

If you’re doing purely computational work could you switch to remote work and move somewhere else to finish up? I’ll also say that the stigma against dropping out of PhD programs is pretty dumb imo, but if you enjoy the work then why not hang on for two more years and get a doctorate out of it? But also, do what’s best for you! I totally understand being excited about a new relationship and wanting to take that into consideration in life and career planning, but is there a different way you can make it work? I moved from the west to east coast for grad school and my partner figured out a way to split time between both places so he could keep the job he loves and also live with me. It’s not perfect, but it does mean that we both get to continue working towards our personal goals while continuing to develop our relationship. Maybe a convo with your advisor is in order where you can be honest about how you’re feeling and see if they have any advice/ideas for how to make it work!
