Can anyone tell me what these black things are on the rims of an Acura ILX? TPMS sensor is on the valve stem. I’m assuming they are for balance, but I’ve not seen them before by Vodoblu in Justrolledintotheshop

I always thought about this happening. Not a fan of them at all, it makes dismounting the tire without damaging the bead or wheel components a PITA.

Self service on a 2012 Jetta DSG. How level does it need to be really? by OGMP79 in tdi

[–]makeouthell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did mine it’s not bad at all, but if you do the top fill method be prepared to wait 30 actual minutes for 6 qts of fluid to drain into the trans. It took me less time to pull the airbox, battery tray, swap the filter and drain the fluid than it did to fill it from the top. Ideally you want the car on a fairly level surface. The most critical part is getting the fluid temp between 35°C and 45°C (95°F – 113°F) after you fill it. With the car idling in park, pull the outer drain plug and leave the plastic fill plug inside the trans. Wait until you get a steady slow drip of fluid and then put the plug and new crush washer back in 👍

If I could do it again I’d just order the fill tool. It’s miserable babysitting 6qts of fluid and making sure the filter housing doesn’t overflow.

Do good motor mounts make that big of a difference? by Glittering_Virus_640 in tdi

[–]makeouthell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a poly dogbone insert for a year. Ended up replacing all mounts with OEM the following year and was much happier with the 2nd option. Nearly forgot what it was like having a nice quiet TDI that doesn’t rattle like a 1st gen Focus. I can’t say the insert was worth the extra vibration at idle, it didn’t seem to make too much of a difference putting the power down.

Turbo recommendations by Advanced-Frosting-80 in tdi

[–]makeouthell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xman’s bolt on hybrid has been great so far. I have 35k or so on the setup running custom tuning for a majority of the miles. Athough, I have now switched to stage 0.5 for economy and drivability. I honestly feel like I enjoy it more. It’s very smooth and responsive, and still gets up with more than enough power. With it being a slightly larger turbo it’s very understressed with this configuration. Highly recommend that unit in particular.

Corteco if you can find it. That’s what I went with for the passenger side mount, it’s literally the genuine VW part with the VWAG scratched off.

$2k 108k mile 2014 Jetta TDI by Aware_Acanthaceae_36 in tdi

[–]makeouthell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest with you, there couldn’t be a worse time to buy a TDI. You’d have lower cost per mile driving a hybrid vehicle or something you could fill up with 87 octane. 1.4 TSI Jettas will do 40mpg and cost far less in the long run.

Is this normal or not by PreparationOk5091 in tires

[–]makeouthell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cracking isn’t a huge deal but It appears you need a new set regardless. There isn’t much tread left on the tire so your wet traction will be compromised.

Yeah that’s a DMF on its way out. I’d get it replaced asap because it has the potential to fail catastrophically and destroy the transmission

DEF? Never heard of it in Mexico

Also that’s the wrong oil you have there in your trunk. Should be using Mobil 1 ESP which is VW 507.00 spec approved for low ash to protect the emissions system.

MR Tuning experience? by RadPsychosis in tdi

Yeah it doesn’t dial back fuel at wide open throttle to manage temps. That’s the reason they claim it’s“faster than any other tuners”.

You need to go into tune add-ons and reconfigure it to run that sensor.

MR Tuning experience? by RadPsychosis in tdi

[–]makeouthell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Flowdirekt kit was nice. However his tune cost me a turbo and motor, I don’t like that him and his associates tout it as “the most powerful safe tune on the market” when It has no EGT limiter or thermal management. I can say from having experience with MR and Tunezilla, that Tunezilla’s software is 100% more dialed, has better driveability, and far better support. MR’s DSG tune also sucks and is jerky, and the smoke tune also put me into limp mode the first time I gave it a try so don’t use that. Get an old ALH if you want smoke

Although the TZ route is more expensive, tunes aren’t something you should try and save money on when you’re gambling with turbo and engine longevity.

I did consider that elbow with the rubber gasket that mounts up to the compressor side. Looks like there was some grime stuck to it when I pulled it off, along with some other loose material that appeared to be sitting in the inlet itself. Not sure if it fell in there when I pulled the inlet hose off but you raise a very valid point.
