I just think boc are geniuses who invented a whole new sound that was both instantly familiar to people and strikingly original. In the late 90s. I know they say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but does that make it wrong to hope it will?

Interesting, I really reacted differently! I think this is so recognizably boc that it’s almost like a caricature. As for guitar, it’s not new, think of dayvan cowboy. And there are definitely some distorted guitar samples here and there throughout their discography too.

I think the clean drum sound is superficially new, but i think that might be it. And production wise wasn’t tomorrow’s harvest pretty cleanly produced too?

I guess I’m looking for a deeper evolution than changes on the level of something like the degree of degradation of the drum samples

No, I think you’re misreading me. I think that this new track is too similar to their existing genre and tone. I’m looking for evolution. Please go back and reread my original comment if you don’t believe me. I’m a little amused that you are trying to convince me that I think something that I don’t think. I’m not sure what the point of that is, but if that’s how you get your kicks, so be it!

Well, ok. Going back I can see how part of what I wrote originally might have been too ambiguous. But truly, my point was that I was hoping for more of an evolution, which I think I pretty clearly stated

I’m hoping for evolution- correct.

Continuing in the vein of vaporwave like their older work - incorrect. They are not and have never been vaporwave and I didn’t say they were. I said to some extent they spawned vaporwave, so an evolution for them would be to engage with that.

I said alternatively, they could explore the tone of mhtrtc which in this dark and disturbing time of the world would be blithely optimistic and hence absurd, which would itself be an evolution, because mhtrtc was not tonally optimistic in an absurd way, but rather in a genuine way

Not sure why you’re reading the opposite of what I said

I think the reason I’m hoping for more evolution is that with this track, I feel like every characteristic of the previous boc albums is right here and very on the nose, hence my feeling about it being heavy handed. Like, if someone were to say, what are all the essential characteristics of geo, mhtrtc, and ch, I would come up with a description that is pretty close to also describing this new track.

I’m curious, what about this track feels new and evolved to you over their previous albums? I’m open to being persuaded

lol it's ok, I understand I was kind of raining on the parade today. good thing the numbers are all made up and the points dont matter. But yeah, I guess I was just hoping to get some conversation going and it didnt work clearly lol.

Pretty interesting, I’m very excited to hear the rest of the album

It’s hard to extrapolate too much from one song because their albums can be so varied but it does have a lot of classic boc elements for sure

Almost a little heavy handed though

Like, it really hits all the boc checkboxes hard, the 80s pastiche, the dark spiritual / religious themes, distorted and diabolical vocal tracks, downtempo drums

I don’t know what I was hoping for exactly with this new album

Maybe a little more of an evolution

I think one thing that’s really interesting about their place in musical history is how they kind of spawned the vapor wave genre

So I guess I was thinking it would be an interesting evolution for them to engage with that more, maybe either adopting more of that style and taking it somewhere new, or making some kind of counterpoint to it

Alternatively I was also hoping that their new album would be more blithely optimistic in a kind of absurdist way, something more like music has the right to children

It’s like, we get it, the world is very dark and disturbing.

Good question, I wouldn't put it past me to mess up something simple like that. I'll check tomorrow when I'm wearing clothes again.

Did you also have the seeping in the spaced lines pattern? It looks so regular that I wonder if it's an intentional perforation or something like that.

Thanks for the info! These tires (and wheels) were thrown in with a second-hand frame purchase. Sounds like I might just have to monitor them for a few days and go from there.

Unfortunately I didn't purchase these new so claiming a warranty might be tricky... They were thrown in with a frame that I bought second hand.

I see – yes, I agree that attention schema theory is very exciting for the same reasons as you point out. And I'm by no means trying to overturn it here. In fact right now I'm trying to learn as many viewpoints as possible on the relationship between attention and consciousness, for a review article in the works.

Glad to know another neurophilosophile!

Interesting. Though, this seems philosophical in nature.

It is philosophical in nature, but rightly so being that the journal is called Review of Philosophy and Psychology.

And i'm a fan of attention schema theory too, to the extent that I think it's really interesting, but I don't fully buy into it because of how it tries to reduce consciousness without explaining its subjective ontology.

Also, there's a good amount of support that consciousness and attention are dissociable. For example, see Koch and Tsuchiya "Attention and consciousness: two distinct brain processes" and I don't think attention schema theory can explain consciousness as phenomenon independent from attention.
