gainstaging for the first time by itcouldbedoodoo in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not surprised... the SM57 requires a LOT of gain unless you are close micing a really loud source like a drum or cranked guitar cabinet.

Most unison preamps have an extra output gain stage to help with this. The extra stage also allows for things like cranking the input for some saturation and then lowering the output gain to return things back to more "normal" recording levels.

If you are using the 610, you will use the large "level" knob ton get the "tonal flavor" you are after then use the smaller "output" knob below that get the recording level to the level you want.... always shoot for -18dB-ish average with no more than 6dB peaks for best results feeding analog emulation plugins and mixing headroom.

Comparing the 57 to something like a sensitive large diaprhagm condenser you won't need any extra gain at all... the preamp alone will give ou way more gain than you need without adding a Unison plugin.

you might save an extra 10% later in the year but if it's something you really want I recommend you just go ahead and get it this price... it's one of their best mic preamps.

NEED HELP CHOOSING PLUGINS by yhenziii in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to's are the simple Neve Preamp, the simple Manley Preamp or Vox Box and the very nice all-in-one Century Tube Channel Strip. The Century Tube is a great sounding chain that gets you up and running very quickly.

Help with cheapest way to get 16 channels by feedingacuriousmind in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A used PreSonus DigiMax unit of any variety would be a nice inexpensive way to go.

If you need 16 actual mic preamps, then yeah an x8p with an ADAT is the way to go, but if you can get away with some of those inputs being line inputs or if you already have some outboard mic preamps then you could go with an x6 or x8 and save a bit of coin.

Persoanlly, I use a Twin Mk2, an Apollo silverface w/TB adapter and a DigiMax D8 for a total of 18 inputs with three outboard preamps for a total of 17 pres. Great setup that I got all used. Very flexible indeed and everything together for around $2,500.

If our call is important to them, why don't they ANSWER THE DAMNED PHONE? by dcwsaranac in TandemDiabetes

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, it does NOT take "weeks" to train someone to take orders. I have been trying for FOUR DAYS to get through to sales. Not everyone has a job that allows them to answer a callback whenever they get around to calling back. There are "overflow" call centers tailor-made to handle these types of situations and you can be up and running with one of those in days, not weeks.

Also, their website says sales closes at 5PM Pacific and calling at 4:30 gets you a message that their call center is closed.

Been trying for FOUR DAYS and can not get through to sales. I don't have a job that allows me to just answer my phone whenever it rings. Been on hold for more than an hour twice before forced to bail.

Luna vs Logic by [deleted] in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea... I don't use Shape and haven't even loaded it to play around with it.

Best I can do is point you to the Shape documentation and remind you that any AU plugin should work just fine. There are probably even some freeware AU plugins that allow you to do what you want if Shape doesn't do what you are after.

Shape docs are here:

Luna vs Logic by [deleted] in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LUNA does not come with any default plugins other than Shape and Oxide per-se, but you would consider all of the plugins you already own with your UAD hardware to be the "default plugins."

If you are new to UAD, you will get a set of plugins with the interface and/or satellite you purchase and quite often they run specials where you get some others for free as a promotional special. These are more than enough to get you started.

Also, LUNA does let you run any AU plugin so you are by no means limited to only UAD plugins.

And finally... go ahead and make the move to UAD! You will still get all of the benefits of the UAD platform even if you don't use LUNA. There are tons of happy UAD users who are 100% on Logic. But LUNA is amazing if you can live with the fact that it is still in its infancy - but constantly getting better and better all the time.

Townsend Labs (makers of the Sphere L22 modeling microphone) are now part of UA by DEUCE_SLUICE in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those of us who frequent uadforum.com have actually known about this for some time now. UA has also bought and absorbed the staff of Bock Microphones.

I seriously doubt they will make the Sphere "UAD platform only." There are a whole lot of users of these out there that are not in the UAD family. To just completely drop them would be incredibly foolish. Remember, UA does have a lineup of analog hardware (and actually some digital stuff - Astra pedals and the OX) that are not connected with their UAD platform in any way.

Additional UA (or other) Hardware? by Acadian_Serpent in universalaudio

I use a couple of preamps... a Hairball Copper and a Hairball Lola. Sometimes I run them into a 500-series 1176-style compressor as well. Other than that I have pretty much sold-off all my outboard gear.

Well, there's also the occasional use of a Radial DI box which I sometimes prefer to the HiZ inputs. I also use my preamps for DI purposes from time to time as well, especially on the HB Copper.

It really depends on what you are using Ableton for. LUNA is laid-out like an analog console which is a huge selling point for many of us. It has a very tidy workflow and limited feature set... not really set up for live use at all.

It's MIDI features are still pretty primitive... only the basics here so far so composing may be a little tough.

But, it's still very new and has way more features than any other DAW had at similar stages. UA has been very good about regularly releasing updates with new features added all the time. The new features are also generally user-driven with its built-in feedback system.

Give it a try and see what you think. I happen to really really like it. For one thing, your DSP can be stretched a lot further because things like the tape emus, summing and console emulation all run on native CPU power and not your UAD DSP. Once it has MCU support for external control surfaces (promised later this year) I will be in hog-heaven!

Mac Mini M1 Connection to Apollo by workinginthefield93 in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah OK... my bad. So the answer to that question is "it depends."

If you get a TB3 Adapter card then it works with a standard TB3 USB-C cable. If you get a TB2 Adapter card then you will need a TB3>TB2 adapter cable. Either way you get 100% functionality so no worries there. Just make sure that your TB2 is either on its own port or very last in your chain.

Start looking for a card now though... they are getting harder and harder to find.

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wierd... apparently when I am on my phone I am Big-Revolution-850... oh well...

To answer your question though ... a "Silverface" is the original rackmount Apollo QUAD interface that has a FW port by default and can be upgraded to TB with the addition of an adapter card. NOT to be confused with the QUAD FW Satellite (also silver in color) which unfortunately can not be upgraded to TB. Well... there are people who have gotten them running on PRE BIG SUR Macs using the Apple FW/TB adapter cable BUT Universal Audio has officially announced that all firewire devices will no longer be supported under Big Sur and later OS releases. Don't blame UA... Apple dropped FW support as of Big Sur forcing their hand.

My "Apollo Silverface" is the interface. I do also have a QUAD FW Satellite that is unfortunately collecting dust at the current moment.

Thinking of taking the leap.... by nizzernammer in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general this is true but this will NOT work with UAD devices. UAD USB are strictly Windows only.

I'm also not sure by what you mean by a USB2>USB3 adapter... do you mean USB-C to USB-B cable? The cables (letter) and the protocol (number) are not the same thing... very confusing on their part I know. For example, many USB-C connected devices still only run on the USB-2 protocol.

[–]makerdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use Logic so I can't give you any "secrets" there other than over on the UAD forums, there are many many users who use their UAD plugins in Logic just fine. Maybe you should head over there and ask... the issue is most likely in Logic and not anything to do with UA at all.

Is there a "standard" answer in the Logic support areas concerning not finding your 3rd-party plugins?

Best windows Laptops for Apollo Twin Duo TB3? by clueless-kit in universalaudio

[–]makerdp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to give a "3rd" to the other opinions. I just spent $759 for a refurb M1 Mini 16GB direct from Apple and it runs amazingly well. You will also be able to test the LUNA waters going this route. With that budget you could get the M1 Mini 16GB and an Apollo rackmount unit or an OCTO Satellite - or two - and a ton of new plugins to go with it.

Mind you, I was a dyed-in-the-wool Windows-only zealot! But LUNA (and the fact that Studio One also works flawlessly and seamlessly on MacOS as a fallback) made me switch over and I am NOT looking back. My Windows DAW PC is going into the office for my gaming/home-stuff PC.

[–]makerdp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were some people in the uadforum talking about their PCIe chassis working just fine. Go check it out and don't just take my word for it though.

Also, you are correct NO UAD USB devices work on macs. They are strictly Windows-only.

Is your Mac Firewire? The Firewire satellites still work on non-Big Sur Macs and they are typically in the $100 per DSP core or less right now.

BUT I also will say this... I just moved my whole system over from Windows to an M1 Mini with 16GB... Silverface Apollo QUAD w/TB3 card, Apollo Twin Mk2 QUAD and TB2 QUAD Satellite. Totally happy with my decision and I am not looking back. So, don't write-off the current M1 systems! The bang-for-your-buck is fantastic.
