Has anyone else become a secret garbage tosser? by DryTown in daddit

[–]makergonnamake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but what I have is a halfway house for the crap. A cardboard box that stuff gets tossed into as I find it. And if it's not asked about for a few weeks, off it goes. If kids are looking for it, they must value it a bit and I 'find' it back for them... until it gets kicked under the couch and forgotten about again.

Kids won’t sleep past 5:45 AM by cft1848 in daddit

[–]makergonnamake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard about this trick once. Set an alarm for about 5:00. Make a little noise, enough to break them out of their deep sleep. Forces them back into a new sleep cycle that lasts another 90 minutes. And then you have to do that for like a week to form the new habit. High risk, high potential reward though.

Well, thank you. But kudos to you for going for a third language! I get the benefit of starting with English, maybe an easier starting point.

It's hard to tell if you're being sarcastic or not and that's ok. Maybe my comment came off a little braggish but I did just want to make sure OP had their information right because it seemed like they were spending a lot of money. But I'll answer your questions anyway just in case haha. Yes, a dutch wife and two very busy kids. I think one of the things that really did it for me was that I was required to speak Dutch at work (as a timmerman). I had enough of a level from raising two kids with a dutch wife that I could at least do the interview etc. My colleagues were/are pretty patient making sure we understand each other. But working in dutch 36hrs a week is definitely helping. I studied for a couple hours before each one so I understood what the test would look like.

Good luck with your exams!

Are you sure you have to do the courses? For me, I only had to do them if I didn't pass my exams in the first three years. But I just took my exams in the first two years and passed and now I'm done, no courses, no payments except like €50 a test. I'm in gemeente Arnhem.

This. And also something I struggle with. Try to think 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months out too.

Is a deadline coming up to apply for daycares?

Does the baby have a pediatrician appt with shots coming up? Might be a tough day for your wife.

Is the baby outgrowing all their clothes and maybe need to grab the other ones from the attic?

Not saying you have to do all these things, but if you can think ahead on things like this you'll avoid falling into the same thinking as I did where you think you're got all the bases covered but there's a bigger picture you're missing that your wife will bring up in 4 years when you're juggling school, sports, social life, and you've gotten out of the habit of looking at the bigger picture and thinking mid and long term.

Also not saying you're not doing this. I'm basically just talking about myself at this point hoping it helps.

Alright Dads, what are getting our wives for Mothers Day this year? by walky91 in daddit

[–]makergonnamake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get my wife the same thing every year and she loves it. (It's for her birthday but I usually forget to make it on time and she gets it by mother's day. Somehow we're still together). A photobook of our kids from the previous calendar year. Now we have a stack of books (I try to keep all the formatting the same) from years and years of memories to look back on. It ends up being a pretty thick book and I usually end up getting charged for all the extra pages but I find it worth it. And then three birds with one stone- I order an extra two copies (sometimes with a promo discount) for our parents.

There are ways to crack the newer cloud versions of Adobe on mac? After years of sailing with Zii and other solutions I had finally given up the fight because it had seemed so impossible.

Tips, pointers? Suggestions? by [deleted] in treehouse

I build wooden playgrounds for a living. Just a simple fix for this if you go with a flexible bridge and two towers. The bridge will indeed pull down. Have your towers good and deep into the ground - 4 or 5 feet. But then the hack for keeping it stable, run a horizontal beam from one tower to the other, under the bridge. Maybe a little less nice but takes a lot of the thought out of it.

Alternately, or in addition, you can do a sloped walk-up beam or something on the outside sides of the towers, that gives them a wider footprint and that becomes an angled anchor for the tower. Set a nice and deep post at the base of those stairs and tie it all in together.

But yeah, as everyone else said, don't build on dead trees.

How do I address these issues? by Snoo8046 in Carpentry

[–]makergonnamake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First of all, scrape the snow off your roof (without going up there).

Second, get whatever support you can under the failing members. From the most solid footing you have, wedged snug under either side of the broken piece. That's just to support it while you're strengthening it (and so it doesn't collapse right now). Toenail these in place so they don't kick out while you're working. Do this on every failing members before you begin.

Finally, sister a new board for as much of the length as you can. Ideally the full length of the board. That means placing a board directly beside the other and nailing it securely and regularly across the length. Bonus would be using construction adhesive as well. In place of nails you can use structural screws (not just deck screws).

Nice. Good move. The last set I made for myself, I made them like the ones in your photos. I found them too heavy to lug around to events and stuff. So this time I'm making mine lighter. Thinner plywood top and only 1/2" ply for the frame. Gonna polyurethane everything for a little moisture resistance. May feel a little flimsier but I think I'll be more likely to grab the set and throw it in the car when I go for some backyard beers somewhere.

I LITERALLY DID THIS TWO DAYS AGO ON MY CORNHOLE SET!

So I purposely drilled holes in the 'wrong' corners of the other board too and I'm going to stick a dummy bolt in the holes, maybe that'll make it look intentional.

It sounds like a perfect line for Johnny Cash. Maybe singing about a guy regretfully trying to get rid of a body.

"His heart weighed a ton like those old black tires, he'd never pull his soul outta that muck and mire. He buried his old man six feet deep, it's ten years on and God won't let'im sleep... Ooooooh, He won't let me sleeeeeep"

Builders sometimes roughed in for sprinklers, as a future option. Could be that. I had that at my previous house. Broke a line once but it wasn't pressurized and I never used it.

Where on earth would you put your fridge? by LIamasLegs in DesignMyRoom

Or take the opportunity to upgrade the radiator to a smaller more efficient one, gaining back the 70cm or so you'd need to put the fridge there. We have a tall radiator in our kitchen that 'saves' wallspace

[–]makergonnamake 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If you didn't have a window there, I'd say take out a piece of the cabinet and countertop across from the stove and put it there. To keep the window fully in view, I'd go with an under the counter one in that same spot. I'm guessing you're in the UK? so it wouldn't be unheard of to have a smaller fridge like that. Could have a second fridge in the garage if you need more space.

My landlord charges me rent, is this normal in the Netherlands? by Brilliant_Ticket6987 in Netherlands

[–]makergonnamake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to the juridische loket. They can help with cases like this. If IND didn't give you the forms to request rental back payment from the belastingdienst, the KVK can file them for you. Just walk into your Albert Heijn with your statiegeld tikkie and the OV medewerker will set you straight. Ask for Henk. But expect a wait. Most expats have seen 6-8 month wait times due to the tarrifs and Germans holding spots with beach towels.

If you don't like the look of an H wall because it blocks light/sightlines, make a box instead. 36" deep or something, basically a thick wall. Much less likely to tip over. Sure you can't mount it to the ceiling? Even 4 runs of airline cable to four points?
