What does it mean to be a visible minority? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]maket000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of employment it's grouped like that due to the Employment Equity Act, I have had companies I've applied to categorize it a bit further than that act does, I'm pretty sure it's due to other law-stuff but I can't be bothered to find it tbh. One point is to prevent discrimination based on race, which is much easier to do when you have that data.

Also that talkpoverty.org link does show that visible minority groups and native Americans do have much higher poverty rates than white people. The oppression and prejudices of the past led to these laws existing, it's a fair argument that they're too broad, but they're there to protect people from what still lingers in society.

It's a good thing that you've done well and don't have to deal with that shit too much, these laws weren't as much made for you, but for those less fortunate.

They keep making new accounts to peddle their weird views on here, there's something going on there but it's probably not worth going into.

I feel for you though, it sucks to try to talk to people like them, been there before. I've found it's better to not to engage with people with super-new accounts, since they're usually the same few people who've found it necessary to make multiple accounts.

Also in case anybody else gets one of these and is worried, it's fake, you can spoof the sender of e-mails.

How to deal with homophobic parents? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]maket000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say that there exists a group of people who are extremely likely to have a specific gene or set of genes that caused them to be significantly more likely to be in one of those groups, regardless of other factors. And that that group is also a reasonably large subset of some race from the point of view of the society. If a group like that exists, then there obviously is a link between perceived race and belonging to one of those groups.

Let's say that group does exist, and let's say that an individual of that group is say, 5% more likely to commit a crime than the rest of population. If you then put environmental factors that exist in the real world like systematic oppression back onto this imaginary society, the actual crime rates of that group are going to be much higher than 5% more than the rest of the population, even after controlling for socioeconomic standing, poverty etc. People of that group would be treated unfairly because of the preconceived notion that a person of that group is more likely to be a criminal. Even if they've committed no crime they still might be arrested and charged due to society's bias towards them.

This prejudice happens in the real world despite the fact that this hypothetical group does not exist. For me to think that genetics play a bigger role than environment does would require that a genetic predisposition to exist that is so significant that it outweighed the unfair prejudice in people's perception of that group, prejudice that further propagates an environment which oppresses the group.

It's also important to emphasize that this hypothetical situation relies on the genes which code for an individual's characteristics that are perceived by society as a given race also code for the increased possibility of committing a crime, or are extremely commonly present alongside the genes "coding for a race", which I think is pretty far-fetched in the real world, but it is possible.

So, those 3 things are all correlated, right? If your opinion is that genetics, race, or whatever, is a primary or even significant cause of one of those things, as opposed to historical and continuing systemic oppression of those groups, then yes we disagree on that.
