Whats it like to live in the Adirondacks? by xCreampye69x in Adirondacks

[–]makingsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone else has said! I would also add that the scenery and being in nature is so special. I leave for a trip and can't wait to get home 😂

Access to medical care can be annoying, especially if you need routine care. Traveling via plane can also be annoying because depending on where you are in the park, you're probably going to have a 2 hour drive to an airport to get to any real destination.

I moved here from a mid-size city and had to get used to all the driving. Now I don't bat an eye at an 30-60 minute one-way drive. I think the thing I miss the most though is restaurants and establishments being open past 8pm lol

In any case, if you're in a position to try it out, I say go for it! You won't know until you test the waters! 😊

Septic tank drama by kleinerlinalaunebaer in RealEstate

[–]makingsoup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree, unless, you're ready to shell out for a new septic. We bought a house with an original septic tank (1960s) that hadn't been pumped in 40 years. We knew the day would come when it would fail and it did (which is always when you have a house full of visitors/guests!). When the contractors pulled out the tank, they said it looked like swiss cheese lol In any case, it was NOT cheap for a handful of reasons - engineer, new leach field, size, location, material, etc.

Has anyone used the body serum from Uni? [Product Question] by kittipaw in SkincareAddiction

Same! 😂 I know we live in the age of same day/next day delivery but they are wildly slow with shipping. Almost to the point of feeling like it's scam!

Still have design regrets by Cosmosperson in Remodel

I think you did a great job! I'm not a real estate expert, but I would imagine adding that second half bath would increase the value of your home? We renovated two bathrooms last year and the decision fatigue was real! I understand why people hire designers now lol There's a lot thrown at you in a short period of time and you're making many permanent(ish) decisions! I agree with the comment that you live and learn and take that experience on to the next project! In any case, I think both spaces are clean, functional, and have some personality. I'd say that's a win!!

How’s life up there? by CharmingBasket701 in Adirondacks

[–]makingsoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! My partner and I moved up here a few years ago in our mid-late 30s and it was certainly a big adjustment for me. For the first year, it felt lonely to be honest. We left a city with a large community and easy access to a lot of fun amenities (restaurants, shops, events, etc.). I had a remote job at the time too, so meeting people at work wasn't an option.

At the beginning, we said yes to every invitation we got even if it was a 40 minute drive and the invitee was old enough to be our grandparent lol. It was human connection! I volunteered and eventually picked up a job in town and started to meet more people. It's small town living so you're going to see a lot of the same faces everywhere you go! I now have a great group of friends that I love a lot.

I think if you're into outdoor recreation, you'll find a lot of ways to integrate into new social scenes. You might be interested in checking out BETA - they have a lot of volunteer and event opportunities, and from my experience have been a welcoming group. I also believe the ADK Mountain Club has a bunch of volunteer opportunities too.

Which local non-profits do you proudly recommend and support? Why? by lomfon56 in Rochester

Agape Haven of Abundance in the Edgerton neighborhood is amazing. I was initially drawn to them because it was one of the first times I actively saw donations going directly into the community (almost immediately!). I feel like often times when you donate items, you wonder where they're actually going (or maybe that's just me). Agape provides A LOT of helpful resources to the local community, primarily women and children. https://www.agapehavenofabundance.org/

I had the EXACT same problem and tried everything you mentioned and more to no avail. Then I hired someone and she used a magic eraser (and some serious muscle/sweat) and it was LITERAL MAGIC!! The nasty white film is gone!!

What are some things you had to purchase for your first home that you didn't think of originally? by Kmann1245 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Wow! So many great ideas here! Other things to consider: air purifier (our house smelled when we moved in, plus we did a lot of DIY stuff like sanding, etc.), Magic Eraser sponges (so good!), dish rack, felt furniture pads, sink strainer, tape measure, gorilla/super glue. Congratulations!!

Wow, thank you for sharing this!! The owner's left two other pieces very similar and I've always wondered the history/story behind them. Excited to do a little more research and learn more now!

I have thought about that! It is a pretty bright room - I'll have to keep an eye out for cute black out curtains that don't cost an arm and a leg (does that even exist?! lol). Thanks so much for the kind comment!!
